DESCRIPTION:Tone List presents a lineup of interstate-local collaborations at Local & Aesthetic. Two high-contrast duos exploring thoughtful blends of electro-acoustic sound\, one dynamic & noisy\, the other evasive & subtle. \nAviva Endean & Josten Myburgh have recently been experimenting with a duo language that combines softly humming layers of electronics generated by sustain pedals\, under their acoustic clarinet & saxophone. Playing at whisper-quiet volumes and gliding in and out of silence\, the electronic tones are like a mirage behind the acoustic layer: all the sounds weaved together\, almost indistinguishable. This is their first live performance of this project after recording it on Dja Dja Wurrung Country earlier this year. \nMaking Out (Rosa Bassett) and Izzy French meet for the first time in a first-meeting performance. With a shared investment in noise\, electro-acoustic improvisation and experimental rock music\, both artists employ games\, restrictions and challenges to discover new possibilities in improvisation and composition\, and are active organisers in their respective scenes. They work with aesthetics that can at times be bracing & brutal and at others dynamic\, intense and unusual. Lots of alignments – but as they’ve never played before we will only find out what they’ll do on the night. \n  \nEvent schedule\n7:00pm — doors \n7:30pm — Making Out & Izzy French \n8:20pm — Aviva Endean & Josten Myburgh \n9:00pm — finish \n  \nAccessibility\nBoth entrances to Local & Aesthetic are accessible: the front door at street level\, and the side door via ramp. A 2 hr workshop will be facilitated by the very special AliceC and Annika Moses\, artists who bring their brilliant knowledge and passion for improvisation\, embodiment\, movement and sound. Following this is a 1-hr long open improvisational performance for workshop participants\, with an audience. Everyone is welcome to join the workshop (RSVP below!) and the performance is for public viewing! \nAliceC says \n‘Through my love and commitment to improvisation\, I am interested in cultivating practices that shift\, transform and elucidate states of moving and being.’ \nAlice is an interdisciplinary artist\, working in dance\, film\, performance and installation\, with a 40 year history of contemporary performance making. She is a provocative and versatile performer whose enduring aesthetic enquiry into the moving body creates work that interrogates and disrupts social and cultural narratives. The materiality of her work emerges from an attention to inner and outer worlds\, inviting an intimacy with the body and place\, wrestling an entwinement of personal/artistic\, colonial and planetary histories. Alice has been an educator and mentor to a generation of Australian artists\, influencing diverse disciplines of dance\, theatre\, writing\, sound\, visual art\, sculpture and film making. Since returning to Boorloo/Perth in 2022 she has been actively engaged with STRUT Dance teaching and mentoring young and mid-career artists. Her most recent work terra first realised as performance\, Holmes à Court Gallery\, Perth (2024) and further film iterations by Cobie Orger with global distribution as a 3-channel 4K video installation and single channel HD video. \nAnnika says \n‘Every musician has a body\, though Western music has spent centuries trying to obscure this fact\, and every movement artist makes sound. Since the beginning of my improv practice in 2016\, I have been curious about the ways musicians and movement artists can get slippery with those labels\, cultivating curiosity in the between-space that is neither Sound nor Dance but something more like Listen.’ \nAnnika lives and makes on Whadjuk Noongar land in Boorloo (Perth)\, so-called Australia. On this land she also likes to write\, play\, listen\, and sew. Annika contributes to the musical projects Nika Mo\, Great Statue\, Didion’s Bible and Lyndon Blue\, and is co-director of Boorloo-based exploratory music org Tone List. DESCRIPTION:Join renowned Australian drummer Will Guthrie for an in-depth workshop exploring polyrhythmic and polymetric techniques in contemporary percussion. Drawing on his collaborations with Mark Simmonds and Mark Fell\, as well as influences from Gamelan traditions and Carnatic rhythmic systems\, Guthrie will guide participants through complex rhythmic concepts in both theory and practice. This session is ideal for drummers\, electronic musicians\, and rhythmically curious artists interested in pushing time beyond the grid. \nPlease bring: Your instrument. For drummers it’s recommended to just bring one smaller instrument rather than a full kit. A PA is available if required. He plays solo using different combinations of drums\, percussion\, amplification and electronics\, and leads the contemporary hybrid percussion / gamelan group ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH. His music has been released on labels such as Black Truffle\, Editions Mego\, Erstwhile\, Clean Feed\, Gaffer Records\, Hasana Editions\, 23five\, iDEAL and his own label Antboy Music. \nGuthrie first made a name for himself within the Australian jazz scene\, establishing himself at a young age as a major presence by winning the Wangaratta National Jazz Awards for drums in 1997 and going on to perform with many of Australia’s most celebrated jazz musicians such as Mark Simmonds\, Julien Wilson and Ren Walters. In the new millennium\, his work took a long detour away from the drum kit through junk electronics\, extreme amplification and electro-acoustic techniques\, documented on a series of solo and collaborative recordings from these years. \nAlongside continuing his electro-acoustic work\, in the last decade\, Guthrie has returned to the drums with a vengeance\, developing a series of solo works marked by a radical single-mindedness\, from relentless rhythmic workouts to earth-quaking explorations of the bass frequencies of gongs and other metal percussion instruments. In the crowded world of free jazz/improv percussion\, Guthrie’s work is distinguished from the delicately pointillist approach of much European improvisation by its rhythmic sophistication\, unashamed virtuosity and undeniable physicality\, touching on aspects of world musics from Javanese gamelan to South Indian Carnatic music. \nAs a dedicated grassroots and DIY concert organiser\, while still a student in Melbourne Guthrie (alongside Ren Walters) established the weekly concert series ‘Improvised Tuesdays’\, now known as the Make It Up Club\, Australia’s longest running performance series for improvised and experimental music. On moving to Nantes\, Guthrie joined the collective CABLE#\, curating and organising regular concerts and an annual festival. \nGuthrie has released over 50 Albums\, as both soloist and in collaboration\, on labels such as his own Antboy Music\, and also Black Truffle\, Editions Mego\, Gaffer Records\, Ideal\, Ipacac and Clean Feed.
