SUMMARY:Revivification
DESCRIPTION:Revivification is an extraordinary immersive exhibition combining sound and cutting-edge biological innovation to bring to life the musical genius of a deceased composer. \nFour years in the making\, Revivification delivers a historic first: the in-vitro (external) ‘brain’ of the late composer Alvin Lucier (1931-2021) creating a new work in real time\, as a live performance over the duration of the exhibition. \nIt is developed by artists Guy Ben-Ary\, Nathan Thompson and Matt Gingold with neuroscientist Stuart Hodgetts based at the University of Western Australia (UWA)\, who have individually spent 25 years pushing boundaries in the biological arts. \nThe physical realisation of Revivification began in 2020 when Alvin Lucier donated his blood for the project. His blood was sent to Harvard Medical School where his white blood cells were reprogrammed into stem cells – the fundamental building blocks of Revivification\, using a process called Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (IPSC) technology. Then\, the Revivification Team transformed (differentiated) Lucier’s stem cells into cerebral organoids: three-dimensional structures that resemble a developing human brain. \nAlvin Lucier stood among the giants of 20th-century experimental music. He transformed how we think about composition by shifting focus from traditional musical elements to the physical properties of sound itself. His work with brain waves\, echolocation\, and room acoustics blurred the lines between music\, science\, and art – an approach that spoke to the artists and researchers at UWA. \nAt the heart of the installation stands a sculptural object that encapsulates the incubator housing Lucier’s ‘in-vitro brain’\, living outside\, and beyond his body (the term ‘in-vitro’ comes from the Latin for ‘in glass’). \nLining the walls are 20 large\, curved brass plates that are both sculptural and the source of the immersive sound environment. Each of the plates is directly connected to the neural activity of Lucier’s brain organoid. As the ‘in-vitro brains” signals pulse through transducers and actuators\, they strike the brass\, creating complex\, sustained resonances that fill the space with sound.

DESCRIPTION:Mungangga Garlagula (translated from Wajarri as “yarning by the fire”) is a collaboration by legendary Indigenous performer Mark Atkins and renowned Finnish-Australian composer and performer Erkki Veltheim. \nProduced by TURA\, this one-night-only performance on August 11 at the State Theatre Centre of WA is a deeply human story of homecoming celebrating the life’s work of one of Australia’s finest First Nations musicians and poets through spoken word\, soundscape and music. \nMungangga Garlagula is a culmination of Mark Atkins‘ life and expansive career. A descendent of\nWestern Australia’s Yamatji people and of Irish-Australian heritage\, Mark Atkins is a virtuosic\ndidgeridoo player and compelling storyteller. A founding member of The Black Arm Band\, Mark has\ncollaborated with global icons such as Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and Jimmy Page\, Philip Glass\,\nOrnette Coleman and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. His 1994 Didgeridoo Concerto showcased his mastery of circular breathing\, playing continuously for over 50 minutes – an unofficial world record at the time. \nErkki Veltheim is a Finnish-Australian multidisciplinary artist\, a storyteller in live and electronic\nsound\, and a remarkable performer on violin and viola. A Sidney Myer Fellow\, he is also the orchestral composer and arranger for Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu’s posthumous ARIA and Australian Music Prize-winning album Djarimirri. \n“It’s such an honour to be able to share stories from across my life in this compelling theatrical\nproduction. These stories come from that place and many others\, and I look forward to sharing them with audiences along the way\,” says Mark Atkins\, Co-Creator\, Mungangga Garlagula. \n“Mungangga Garlagula transports audiences to a world where dreams and reality merge\, and the\neveryday coexists with the mythological\,” says Erkki Veltheim\, Co-Creator\, Mungangga Garlagula. \nAs long-time collaborators and members of The Narli Ensemble\, Mark and Erkki have worked together for many years through TURA’s Kimberley touring program – a creative relationship that naturally evolved into the development of Mungangga Garlagula\, a work shaped over time and across country. \nWhile Mungangga Garlagula features Mark Atkins and Erkki Veltheim in the live performance\,\nexceptional Australian musicians Genevieve Lacey\, Vanessa Tomlinson\, Stephen Magnusson\,\nAnthony Pateras and Scott Tinkler have also created and recorded a shifting bed of sound that is\nintegral to the work. SUMMARY:Sage J Harlow: Interdisciplinary making with text scores
DESCRIPTION:Sage J Harlow is the author and composer of O\,D\,E\, a “text score opera” premiering at The Blue Room Theatre from 26 August – 6 September. Probably the first opera of its kind\, text scores – open-ended\, written prompts for musicians and singers – make up the entirety of the work’s 65-minute score. There is no traditional music notation in the opera. \nSo what is a text score? Why write them? What different types of text score are there? This workshop will explore these questions. You’ll be invited to play some text scores by other people; write some of your own; and play each other’s. Sage will also talk a bit about how and why she used text scores to write O\,D\,E\, and what she learnt from bringing these to artists from other disciplines. \nBring: \n\nsomething to write with\nsomething to make sound\, like:\n\nan instrument you like playing\nyour voice\nsome found objects that make nice sounds\n\n\nsomething else you like making art with if you like (dance\, painting\, drawing\, etc.)\n\nThis workshop is open to anyone – you don’t need to have a practice as a musician or composer\, and can participate as far as you feel comfortable. \nAbout O\,D\,E\nMeditation is a powerful force. O used it for liberation\, until their peaceful passing. Their lover E is led astray by power and seeks to bring O back from the dead. They manage—but do not recognise O in their new body\, so seek to become Death themself. Death is just doing her job. Until she isn’t. \nO\,D\,E is a new experimental opera by Sage J Harlow (aka Sage Pbbbt). A queer\, occult retelling of Orpheus & Eurydice\, grounded in the suffering that comes with simply being alive. Exploring gender and identity\, characters change bodies\, enter contracts with eternity and howl through the libretto as they do so. \nUnderpinned by live music from an ensemble of noisemakers who bring a new meaning to “pit band”\, O\,D\,E fuses the grandeur of opera with lo-fi\, weirdo improv and metal aesthetics. \nO\,D\,E premieres 26 August – 6 September at The Blue Room Theatre. Tickets on sale now. \nAccessibility\nThe Blue Room Theatre is a wheelchair accessible space. The workshops are held in the Old Office\, which is on the ground floor. Accessible\, all-gender bathrooms are located on the ground floor. The venue will be lit by a mixture of fluro and natural lighting. DESCRIPTION:As a part of our current exhibition – The world is all cut-outs then – artist Jimi DePriest and composer Nate Wood’s collaborative soft robotics sculpture Critical Mass brings together air pumps\, switches\, gates and silicone over a fourty minute sequence of air\, movement and sound. \nJoin us Tuesday evening after hours at the gallery to sit and watch through the full Critical Mass sequence\, followed by a discussion between the artists and Goolugatup Gallery Curator Paul Boye. \nFree event\, refreshments provided. \n** Note: we will be filming the Critical Mass sequence\, which will require a quiet audience. \n✮✮✮ \nGoolugatup Heathcote is a cultural precinct located on the shores of the Derbal Yerrigan\, in the suburb of Applecross\, just south of the centre of Boorloo Perth\, WA. \nThe precinct’s street address is 58 Duncraig Rd\, Applecross WA. It is 10 minute drive from the CBD\, with ample parking on site. The closest train station is Canning Bridge\, and the closest bus route the 148. \nThe bar is wheelchair accessible through rear access. ACROD parking is available nearby. Main entry is 1.4m wide\, and accessible toilet doors are 0.9m wide. Toilets are unisex.
