SUMMARY:Ross Bolleter & Eduardo Cossio - "Such and Such" album launch
DESCRIPTION:[Ed. – postponed to June 22!]\n\nROSS BOLLETER & EDUARDO COSSIO\nSUCH & SUCH – ALBUM LAUNCH\n\nwith\nANTOINETTE CARRIER\nDJUNA LEE\n\nOutcome Unknown is proud to present the launch of Such & Such\, the new release by improvising musicians Ross Bolleter & Eduardo Cossio. Join us on June 15 for a house concert in the Bayswater area. Featuring a solo set by Djuna Lee on double bass\, and a rare performance by composer-pianist Antoinette Carrier. \n2pm\, Saturday 22 June\nEntry is pay-what-you-can\, with a suggested price of $25 or $15.\nPlease RSVP here \nOn Such & Such\, each time Ross’s finger compels a hammer to strike three adjacent strings on one of his ruined pianos\, their individual tangential tunings ring out in a gong-like sonority. Splintering harmonics and difference tones echo through a Bayswater kitchen in fractal patterns. \nAnd where Ross’s ruination is revealed in the pointillism of plucks and strikes\, Eduardo’s zithers ring out constantly in eternally renewing micro-rhythms\, sounding the pace of entropic unravelling. Stability on the precipice of collapse: a poem to the potency for rupture present in moments that seem inert. – Josten Myburgh \nSuch & Such is out on Thödol Records (Nîmes\, France). Digital and physical copies are available from Bandcamp.

SUMMARY:Rational Playtime #1 - intonation working group
DESCRIPTION:Dates:\nJune 29\, 1pm\nJuly 4\, 6pm\nJuly 13\, 1pm \nRegister:\njostenmyburgh@protonmail.com \nRational Playtime is a weekly session to learn about and play in the tuning system known as rational intonation (RI\, also called extended just intonation\, EJI or just JI). It is hosted within Josten Myburgh’s residency in the Goolugatup Heathcote Project Space\, wherein they are exploring these techniques in their own work with international mentors. Each week\, we’ll read an assigned text and then focus on playing and listening together. The focus will always be on accessing the sensory experience the tunings offer\, with the theory as a tool to support this. \n\n\nRI is based off of tuning frequencies to whole number ratios of each other*. The waveforms of RI intervals vibrate more periodically together than those between notes of the normal Western 12-tone equal tempered scale\, and tend to sound “fused” when played together. Being in tune in 12-tone equal temperament can sometimes feel arbitrary\, whereas tuning in RI is grounded very deeply in finely-tuned listening to distinct phenomena. Both systems have unique qualities and advantages\, but playing in RI offers a chance to connect intimately with vibration in a way that can open many new possibilities for listening and creating. \n\n\nRational Playtime is less of a workshop and more of a chance to meet other people interested in the aesthetic consequences and possibilities of RI. The session is grounded in experimental sound practice\, but anyone interested may attend\, including players active in early music and non-Western musics which use rational or just tunings. \n\n\n*this reference to rational numbers is what’s meant by the term rational – it doesn’t refer to being somehow reasonable or logical (or elitist)! \nImage courtesy of Catherine Lamb & Sacred Realism.
