DESCRIPTION:Audio-visual duo Black Zenith (Darren Moore and Brian O’Reilly – Singapore) investigate the intersecting points between electronic music\, improvisation and abstract moving images. Integral to their work is the use of analogue modular synthesisers that generate live visuals through the transformation of audio signals into images. They are joined by Lindsay Vickery and Stuart James in a program of works fusing South Indian Konnokol rhythmic techniques\, improvisation\, alternative music controllers and the symbiotic relationship between sound and image.

DESCRIPTION:Simon Charles and John Kinsella have collaborated on their work\, Visceral Fragments\, since late 2022. \nOver many months\, these artists exchanged poetry\, sound recordings\, and interpretations of each’s work. This culminated in a premiere performance at Audible Edge festival\, described by Izzy French in Magazine 600 as ’mythical’\, and ‘enthralling’. Focusing on York’s Suspension Bridge as a central theme\, Visceral Fragments is a place-based and anti-colonial work. \nField recordings transduced through air\, water\, and the bridge itself underpin the sonic language of the work. DESCRIPTION:Regional Quick Response artist-in-residence\, Moses Mohammed Kington-Walberg\, invites you to drop into Studio 2 at PICA for an afternoon of mutually inspired sound and art. During his residency\, Moses is working with musical instruments\, found objects\, field recordings\, photography and Eucalyptus branches from his family farm to create an immersive and interactive sound-garden. “I’ve tried to play as freely and eclectically as I can using simple materials. The Eucalyptus installation is reminiscent of games we’d play as kids along the Avon River in Toodyay.”  \nAudiences are also invited to play. Drop in and create with Eucalyptus in the studio whilst listening to a live ambient-experimental sound-set by Moses. \n\n\n\nAbout the artist\nMoses Kington-Walberg is an early career composer from the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia (Ballardong\, Yued and Whadjuk Noongar country). His current work explores ideas of interpretive autonomy\, bioacoustics and ‘the ordinary’\, seeking to quietly tackle mechanistic protocols in traditional classical settings. Moses’ compositions are experimental\, texturally driven and dynamic\, underpinned by playful\, highly collaborative performance philosophies. Moses received a Bachelor of Music (Hons.) from the University of Melbourne (under Elliott Gyger) and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Australia (under James Ledger). He has participated in various training programs including those hosted by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra\, the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Australian Art Orchestra. Moses has composed for a number of ensembles and soloists across Australia\, and has been recognised with awards including the Dorothy Ellen Ransom Prize in Musical Composition\, the WA Symphony Orchestra Bendat Scholarship and the Ellinor Gertrude Harris Bequest.

DESCRIPTION:Wishful Thinking & Soft Centre are thrilled to present LOLINA [LDN] (fka Inga Copeland) for her debut show in WA. Joined by Rok Riley & Great Statue. Lolina is an electronic and digital musician\, also known for her past projects as Inga Copeland. She was a member of the band Hype Williams between 2009 and 2013\, collaborating with Dean Blunt on music\, videos and performances. Copeland’s first solo album ‘Because I’m Worth It’ was self-released in 2014. Moving towards digital composition with her Lolina project\, she released a full-length video album ‘Live in Paris’ in 2016\, followed by ‘The Smoke’ in 2018. Lolina’s live performances evolved through experiments with DJ equipment. Using CDJ players to loop\, scratch and manipulate her existing recordings\, she developed an improvisational cut up style exemplified on her releases ‘Live in Geneva’\, ‘Who is experimental music?’ (both 2019)\, and ‘Fast Fashion’ (released on experimental US label\, Deathbomb Arc in 2021). Lolina’s three-part radio residency aired on NTS in November 2020. SUMMARY:Stations of Light performance program - Naoko Uemoto / Eduardo Cossio & Simon Charles
DESCRIPTION:‘Stations of Light’ is the new exhibition by musician and photographer Eduardo Cossio. The newly developed work presents a series of abstract images exploring light in sculptural ways. Photograms\, re-projections\, and paper sculptures are used to articulate a space for contemplation. \nWith an emphasis on photographic process\, the collection treats light as both medium and subject. Light’s ephemeral quality is explored through sequences and sculptural arrangements that evoke a place for worship\, but also hint at the origins of photography; to what William Henry Fox Talbot (1800–1877) called ‘the art of fixing shadows’. \nThe exhibition includes one of Cossio’s Photo Scores projected in the gallery. The animated video projection re-interprets his own photographs through visual and musical tropes such as concrete art\, collage techniques\, and indeterminacy. Eduardo will offer live realizations of his Photo Scores with the help of musical collaborators. \n\n\nBIO\nEduardo Cossio is a Peruvian-Australian musician and photographer. He is known for his novel approach to acoustic instruments with the use of non-standard techniques and electronics. Echoing his music practice\, Eduardo’s images move between the recognized and the defamiliarized; adopting shifting sightlines to explore texture\, surface\, light\, and subject matter usually considered peripheral. \nHis debut exhibition ‘Transports’ was shown at Spectrum Project Space in March of 2024. His photography has been acquired by the State Library of WA and featured at the CLIP Awards in 2022 and 2024. DESCRIPTION:Josten Myburgh \n24 June – 21 July 2024 \n\n\nJosten Myburgh’s residency involves the development of a concert-length electro-acoustic work for solo alto saxophone\, projected through a triangle of speakers with Josten in the middle. \n  \nThe work centres a technique Josten has been developing combining non-standard tunings and electronic processing on the instrument. They will be using the residency to develop this technique in detail\, looking for unusual combinations of frequencies which produce psychoacoustic phenomena\, such as surprisingly loud sub-bass tones and rhythmic pulsations. Their focus is on a tender\, embodied relationship to composing and playing\, that comes out of a curious and idiosyncratic approach to their instrument and how its sound resonates in space and perception. \n  \nJosten will be working on the project with the assistance of mentors Rebecca Lane\, James Rushford\, Erin Royer and Patrick Gunasekera\, and lighting designer Adelaide Harney. \n  \nThis project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Music Australia and Creative Australia\, its principal arts investment and advisory body. \n‍ \nFlyer by Lyndon Blue.

DESCRIPTION:Join sound designer Kingsley Reeve as he walks with you on an acoustic awareness tour of the Moores building and surroundings\, facilitating the process of tuning in. That is\, tuning into the architecture\, the land\, each other and self. \nThe theatre performance\, “An Imaginary Life” responds to the natural acoustics of a room and resonates with what already exists. SUMMARY:Stations of Light performance program - Lana Rothnie / Sage Pbbbt & Eduardo Cossio
DESCRIPTION:‘Stations of Light’ is the new exhibition by musician and photographer Eduardo Cossio. The newly developed work presents a series of abstract images exploring light in sculptural ways. Photograms\, re-projections\, and paper sculptures are used to articulate a space for contemplation. \nWith an emphasis on photographic process\, the collection treats light as both medium and subject. Light’s ephemeral quality is explored through sequences and sculptural arrangements that evoke a place for worship\, but also hint at the origins of photography; to what William Henry Fox Talbot (1800–1877) called ‘the art of fixing shadows’. \nThe exhibition includes one of Cossio’s Photo Scores projected in the gallery. The animated video projection re-interprets his own photographs through visual and musical tropes such as concrete art\, collage techniques\, and indeterminacy. Eduardo will offer live realizations of his Photo Scores with the help of musical collaborators. \n\n\nBIO\nEduardo Cossio is a Peruvian-Australian musician and photographer. He is known for his novel approach to acoustic instruments with the use of non-standard techniques and electronics. Echoing his music practice\, Eduardo’s images move between the recognized and the defamiliarized; adopting shifting sightlines to explore texture\, surface\, light\, and subject matter usually considered peripheral. \nHis debut exhibition ‘Transports’ was shown at Spectrum Project Space in March of 2024. His photography has been acquired by the State Library of WA and featured at the CLIP Awards in 2022 and 2024. A celebration of the power of listening\, both to people and to our surroundings. \nWorld Listening Day proclaims that it is time to listen intently to the people in our lives and the worthy causes that are seeking attention.
