DESCRIPTION:“good-time-math-prog-disco-slow-head-banging” – Improved Sequence \nFor the weird rock dogs out there Tone List is excited to bring over “the world’s only Australian-Italian electroacoustic noise rock trio”\, Sulla Lingua. An alliance between Italian out-improvisers Riccardo la Foresta & Stefano Pilia and the prolific Castlemaine-based composer Anthony Pateras\, the trio’s live sets are a truly smashing compendium of drum kit hammering\, baritone guitar melodies and Doepfer modular drones. This happens over layers of samples procured from the sonic experimentation each of them is staunchly dedicated to in their solo practice. Silly brainiac rock for those inclined towards the likes of The Dead C\, Slint or Lotto. \nJoining them on the night is a solo set of unprecedented noisiness from Sara Salt (of hardcore quartet Nervous) & post-metal & free improv experimentalist Gracie Smith back in fine form on solo drum kit. \nEvent schedule\n  \n7:30pm – doors \n8:00pm – Gracie Smith \n8:50pm – Sara Salt \n9:40pm – Sulla Lingua \n10:30pm-ish – finish \nSee also \nEach member of Sulla Lingua will play a solo set alongside a performance by Zoe Koong on November 5 at Goolugatup Heathcote\, doors at 6pm! \nAccessibility\nDownstairs at The Buffalo Club is wheelchair accessible via ramp. Some of the pathways in the venue are narrow and can be crowded. \nThe show will be loud and play with. Mostly recently visiting to perform with a quintet in Perth Festival\, Anthony’s solo electronic work is bracing\, elaborate and multi-layered – and plays tricks on your ears. Anthony is best known for enduring collaborations with avant-metal icons like Mike Patton & Stephen O’Malley but has an extraordinarily diverse output across the fields of orchestral\, chamber music\, film soundtrack\, sound installation and good hangs. \nRiccardo la Foresta is a curator & percussionist based in Modena. His solo work explores the drummophone – a self-made instrument that pushes compressed air onto drumheads in order to make them sing. Instrument-builder geeks can nerd out on the amazing things these instruments do\, whilst the immersive quality of the sound makes it easy to forget what’s making it and bathe in washes of raspy organ-like drones. \nStefano Pilia is a composer and baritone guitarist whose solo works investigate a sculptural\, almost orchestral palette from the instrument through electroacoustic processing using pedals and modular synthesis. Based in Bologna\, his diverse collaborators include Mike Watt\, Phill Niblock\, Rokia Traorè and Valerio Tricoli. \nZoe Koong is a Boorloo-based composer exploring dark industrial music that centres her fuzzed out bass guitar playing\, drawing on a range of influences like Grouper\, Ethel Cain\, David Lynch & Natural Snow Buildings to make unsettling sonic stories.

DESCRIPTION:Must Be Somewhere’ by Sanche Zev \nOpening Night:\nThursday 16th October\n6-9pm \nExhibition runs:\nThursday – Sunday 11 – 4pm \n”Must Be Somewhere” is an ongoing project by Sanche Zev that explores the intersection of the desert’s soundscape and human presence. Using payphones as field recorders\, Zev calls public phones across the Western\, Central\, and Southern desert regions\, capturing both conversations with strangers and the silence of the desert when calls are answered by no one. \nThis evolving collection of audio\, transcriptions\, and photographs examines the voyeuristic nature of these interactions\, offering a poetic reflection on the intrusion into public spaces. Through this work\, Zev investigates long-distance communication and the coexistence of built environments with the vast\, arid landscapes they inhabit. \nSanche Zev (b. 1990\, Boorloo | Perth) is a photo-based artist whose work spans photography\, print\, sound\, and artist books. His practice engages the imagination to challenge and rethink contemporary notions of technology and art. Through designing installations\, Zev takes a multidisciplinary approach to documentary art\, using it as an entry point to create narratives that explore our understanding of human interaction and the landscapes we inhabit. \nWorking with experimental sound and listening practices to evoke shared experiences has become a key aspect of his work\, fostering conversation\, and generating new ideas. Zev is deeply curious about connecting with the unfamiliar; this sense of wonder has fueled his storytelling. His most recent project\, Must Be Somewhere\, is an ongoing exploration of listening to arid landscapes. DESCRIPTION:SWWIM featuring Ellen Kirkwood and Mary Rapp!!! \nS for Sydney (where Ellen and Mary are based)\, S for spontaneous because we started planning this a few days ago\, S for Splinter Orchestra which Ellen is a long-term member of and is a group that hugely inspires many improvisers in Boorloo\, and S for spring for alliteration purposes even though it’s actually Kambarang right now x \nEllen and Mary are long-term collaborators and iconic improvisers in the national scene and will play a duo set\, supported by a first-meeting play from Fynn Evans-Ocharen\, Sage Pbbbt\, Eva Tucker\, and Saskia Willinge. We will then have an open jam/ play/ read through of one of Ellen’s scores\, so bring a sound-making object (or be ready to use your voice) if you’d like to join in. Maybe we could … swim in some cool sounds together… just an idea. \nEntry by donation suggested $20/10/5\, no one turned away for lack of funds\, and money will be split between the artists. \nWe will also have some WWIM merch for sale and our library up and running. \n\nAccessibility\nThe room and one of the 3 toilets are fully wheelchair accessible. \n\nParking and Public Transport Information\nThere are 5 bays available on site\, but these may not be available during the week and on Saturday morning. Parking is available at the Subiaco Theatre parking area or in Bagot Rd – both are paid options during the week between 8-6pm but are free at other times.\n\n\n\nEarthwise can be accessed via Transperth bus services 27 and 28\, and is a 15min walk from Subiaco train station and 10 min from Daglish station.

The culmination of Sze’s Site-Specific Residency; WIP – The Last Remaining Stand. \nSze will be performing ’The Last Stand’\, a digital haunting in two parts: constructed from field recordings\, 3D scanning and an autonomous digital instrument made from a map of the area. \nAbout the artist: \nW. Sze Tsang / samarobryn is an audio-visual artist working across temporalities and histories. Tsang’s practice explores how combining sounds\, visuals\, geospatial information and environmental data can express the multi-layered narratives on history and climate within place. \nThe Site-Specific Residency is a paid opportunity\, and realised through our open call and the generous donations of artists and the community.These paid opportunities are the backbone of our programming. Ross is a composer\, poet\, and Zen master described by The Wire as “a true original of Australian composition”. For more than four decades he has explored the unique and resonant sounds of Ruined Pianos. \nEduardo is a musician\, visual artist\, and the organiser of Outcome Unknown. He is known for an idiosyncratic approach to electro-acoustic music using de-tuned zithers\, voice\, and harmonicas. \nThe duo began working together in 2022. They have since released Dark Shine (2023)\, Such & Such (2024) – both on the French label Thödol Records – and Glint (2025). Their co-written article ‘Casting a Net for Synchronicities’ will be published by UnMagazine in September. \n💠 \nJosten Myburgh is a composer\, improviser\, saxophonist and organiser of experimental music. Drawing from complementary areas of research\, the two will discuss how contemporary culture is being shaped by digital tools for creative production and consumption\, such as Spotify and Ableton. \nLiz Pelly’s book Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Cost of the Perfect Playlist is an unsparing investigation into Spotify’s origins and influence on music\, weaving unprecedented reporting with incisive cultural criticism. Hard copies of Mood Machine will be available for purchase on the night\, supplied by Rabble Books. \nMichael Terren is co-editor of the book Creative Tools and the Softwarization of Cultural Production. The book explores how creativity is increasingly designed\, marketed\, and produced through digital products and services\, which are not always politically\, economically or culturally neutral. \nAs independent music labels operating in grassroots communities\, Tone List and Rockton Records recognise the need to divest from extractive\, unethical streaming platforms like Spotify. SUMMARY:Sage J Harlow: Interdisciplinary making with text scores
DESCRIPTION:Sage J Harlow is the author and composer of O\,D\,E\, a “text score opera” premiering at The Blue Room Theatre from 26 August – 6 September. Probably the first opera of its kind\, text scores – open-ended\, written prompts for musicians and singers – make up the entirety of the work’s 65-minute score. There is no traditional music notation in the opera. \nSo what is a text score? Why write them? What different types of text score are there? This workshop will explore these questions. You’ll be invited to play some text scores by other people; write some of your own; and play each other’s. Sage will also talk a bit about how and why she used text scores to write O\,D\,E\, and what she learnt from bringing these to artists from other disciplines. \nBring: \n\nsomething to write with\nsomething to make sound\, like:\n\nan instrument you like playing\nyour voice\nsome found objects that make nice sounds\n\n\nsomething else you like making art with if you like (dance\, painting\, drawing\, etc.)\n\nThis workshop is open to anyone – you don’t need to have a practice as a musician or composer\, and can participate as far as you feel comfortable. \nAbout O\,D\,E\nMeditation is a powerful force. O used it for liberation\, until their peaceful passing. Their lover E is led astray by power and seeks to bring O back from the dead. They manage—but do not recognise O in their new body\, so seek to become Death themself. Death is just doing her job. Until she isn’t. \nO\,D\,E is a new experimental opera by Sage J Harlow (aka Sage Pbbbt). A queer\, occult retelling of Orpheus & Eurydice\, grounded in the suffering that comes with simply being alive. Exploring gender and identity\, characters change bodies\, enter contracts with eternity and howl through the libretto as they do so. \nUnderpinned by live music from an ensemble of noisemakers who bring a new meaning to “pit band”\, O\,D\,E fuses the grandeur of opera with lo-fi\, weirdo improv and metal aesthetics. \nO\,D\,E premieres 26 August – 6 September at The Blue Room Theatre. Tickets on sale now. \nAccessibility\nThe Blue Room Theatre is a wheelchair accessible space. The workshops are held in the Old Office\, which is on the ground floor. Accessible\, all-gender bathrooms are located on the ground floor. The venue will be lit by a mixture of fluro and natural lighting. DESCRIPTION:Mungangga Garlagula (translated from Wajarri as “yarning by the fire”) is a collaboration by legendary Indigenous performer Mark Atkins and renowned Finnish-Australian composer and performer Erkki Veltheim. \nProduced by TURA\, this one-night-only performance on August 11 at the State Theatre Centre of WA is a deeply human story of homecoming celebrating the life’s work of one of Australia’s finest First Nations musicians and poets through spoken word\, soundscape and music. \nMungangga Garlagula is a culmination of Mark Atkins‘ life and expansive career. A descendent of\nWestern Australia’s Yamatji people and of Irish-Australian heritage\, Mark Atkins is a virtuosic\ndidgeridoo player and compelling storyteller. A founding member of The Black Arm Band\, Mark has\ncollaborated with global icons such as Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and Jimmy Page\, Philip Glass\,\nOrnette Coleman and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. His 1994 Didgeridoo Concerto showcased his mastery of circular breathing\, playing continuously for over 50 minutes – an unofficial world record at the time. \nErkki Veltheim is a Finnish-Australian multidisciplinary artist\, a storyteller in live and electronic\nsound\, and a remarkable performer on violin and viola. A Sidney Myer Fellow\, he is also the orchestral composer and arranger for Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu’s posthumous ARIA and Australian Music Prize-winning album Djarimirri. \n“It’s such an honour to be able to share stories from across my life in this compelling theatrical\nproduction. These stories come from that place and many others\, and I look forward to sharing them with audiences along the way\,” says Mark Atkins\, Co-Creator\, Mungangga Garlagula. \n“Mungangga Garlagula transports audiences to a world where dreams and reality merge\, and the\neveryday coexists with the mythological\,” says Erkki Veltheim\, Co-Creator\, Mungangga Garlagula. \nAs long-time collaborators and members of The Narli Ensemble\, Mark and Erkki have worked together for many years through TURA’s Kimberley touring program – a creative relationship that naturally evolved into the development of Mungangga Garlagula\, a work shaped over time and across country. \nWhile Mungangga Garlagula features Mark Atkins and Erkki Veltheim in the live performance\,\nexceptional Australian musicians Genevieve Lacey\, Vanessa Tomlinson\, Stephen Magnusson\,\nAnthony Pateras and Scott Tinkler have also created and recorded a shifting bed of sound that is\nintegral to the work. Co-created with Mark and Erkki from the outset\, the recorded score and live\nelements form a unified sonic and narrative experience. \nAudiences are led into a nocturnal world of memories\, echoes\, spirits and dreams\, conjuring Country through words and breath\, the snapping of branches and the play of shadows between the listener by the fire and the impenetrable darkness beyond. \nPremiering in Mark’s hometown of Albany in late 2024\, Mungangga Garlagula captivated audiences in the southwest of WA before a celebrated 2025 season at the Canberra International Music Festival. \nDeveloped over five years with UKARIA Cultural Centre in South Australia\, it is the latest commission from TURA\, a national organisation based in Boorloo/Perth making a leading contribution to the cultural life of Australia and beyond through award-winning productions\, major projects and community engagement programs that strive for positive social change. \n“The celebration of the life and work of one of this country’s finest artists is a unique opportunity to\nexperience the crossover of many worlds – it’s powerful\, engaging and transformative\,” says Tos\nMahoney\, TURA’s Artistic Director. \nA one-night only performance of Mungangga Garlagula (Yarning by the Fire) in Boorlo/Perth is happening on Monday 11 August 2025\, 7:30pm at the Heath Ledger Theatre.
