SUMMARY:Tone List x Vessel pres. Mary Rapp
DESCRIPTION:“Mary Rapp is one of the most exciting and emerging talents in Australia. I haven’t in over 40 years of international experience come across a musician of Mary’s caliber.” Jon Rose \n“Rapp had an instinct for being taciturn and pithy; for making the music gossamer light or adding phenomenal weight and vigour\, using extraordinarily few notes” Sydney Morning Herald \nVessel joins Tone List in presenting a performance for voice\, cello and double bass by Mary Rapp. The performance will take place in Gian Manik’s exhibition Regenerative Strategies and will absorb the work\, the space and the site itself to create a deeply felt exploration of embodied resonance – music with guts. This is Mary’s first performance on Whadjuk boodja\, since recently relocating here. \nDoors open 7pm \nPerformance 7.30pm \nVessel will run a paid bar\, with support from our event partners Otherside Brewing\, MadFish Wines\, Lightning Minds \nABOUT MARY RAPP \nMary’s practice is led by their perpetual curiosity that investigates jazz\, classical\, experimental and Korean traditional music. Her interests and musical goals lie in notions of digging deep into the body\, movement led technique\, site specific composition and practice\, and noisy catharsis. https://maryrapp.com.au/ \n  \nABOUT TONE LIST \nTone List is an artist-run\, Boorloo-based label for exploratory music. It is dedicated to the nurturing of approaches to music-making which receive little or no attention in existing structures on the west coast of this continent\, especially where those approaches are radical or novel. Tone List is a not-for-profit incorporated association\, and a registered charity. Its core operations are volunteer-run. \nhttps://www.tonelist.com.au/ \nABOUT VESSEL \nVessel is a new interdisciplinary exhibition space and non-profit contemporary arts organisation that explores and generates new ideas of change through art\, creativity\, experimentation and societal exchange. \nwww.vesselcontemporary.org \nVessel is located at the Naval Store: 141 Queen Victoria St\, Walyalup. \nWhen possible\, we encourage you to catch public transport\, there is a bus stop located right out the front on Queen Victoria St (Stop ID: 10280).   \nThe Naval Store is fully accessible\, there are two ACROD parking bays located on Tuckfield St\, there is a ramp access from this parking to our gallery entrance on Canning Hwy.  \nVehicle parking is located on Tuckfield St\, and Beach St.

SUMMARY:Politics of the Machines sundowners with Robbie Avenaim (Naarm)\, E Millar & Difficult Listening DJs
DESCRIPTION:Tone List is partnering with the Politics of the Machines conference to present two avant-sundowners in the cosy nook that is Astral Weeks. \nRiffing off the conference theme of synthetic sentience\, this little program delves into the sounds of field recordings\, machine animism\, swarming and simulacra. \nA solo set from E Millar explores rich textures produced by amplifying tiny sounds made by kinetic sculptures made from recycled consumer electronics. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to field recordings\, E’s works often engage directly with this parallel\, foregrounding both the earthiness and strangeness of these mechanical constructs. \nVisiting artist Robbie Avenaim is a virtuosic drummer with a collaborative CV that encompasses leading artists including Stephen O’Malley (of Sunn O))))\, Oren Ambarchi and Chris Abrahams. He’ll perform with his automated percussion instrument SARPS\, which plays randomly-iterating rhythms\, delicate flutters and unfathomably high-BPM pulses using motorised sticks. \nSurrounding these short performances\, DJs from the Difficult Listeningroster\, Lesley Kaye & Michael Terren (with some occasional cameos by Josten Myburgh)\, will share atmospheric music for a post-conference unwind or an inquisitive dive. \nJuly 16: \nE Millar – recycled consumer electronics\, amplification\, 6:30pm \nLesley Kaye (DJ) 5:30pm – 9pm \nJuly 17: \nRobbie Avenaim (Naarm) – drum kit\, percussion & SARPS\, 7pm \nMichael Terren (DJ)\, 5:30pm – 9pm \nPresented by Tone List & supported by POM Perth\, Astral Weeks\, Perth Business Events and the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Western Australia. \nAccessibility: Venue is a wheelchair-accessible\, acoustically treated\, dimly lit small bar. Incense is used in the venue and ventilation is limited. The music will be dynamic on both nights\, with moments that feel loud\, percussive and repetitive and others that are very delicate and soft. \nPoster by Oliva Joi Rawlings.

There will not be a dedicated check-out or quiet space in the venue due to limited space.\nFree earplugs and N95 masks are available from the person at the door.\nFirst Nations folks\, companion card holders & Palestinian people are invited to attend for free.\n\n𝓐𝓬𝓴𝓷𝓸𝔀𝓵𝓮𝓭𝓰𝓶𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓼\nO\,D\,E is produced by Tone List\, a Boorloo-based label for exploratory music.\nThe creative development has received support from the Western Australian State Government through the Department of Local Government\, Sports and Cultural Industries\, and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.\nThe annual season of O\,D\,E is supported by The Blue Room Theatre.

SUMMARY:Sun Returns: Unfold
DESCRIPTION:Set your alarm clock for a meditative listening session set against the backdrop of the sunrise!\nIn partnership with Tone List\, Boola Bardip presents an experimental morning concert\, set against the backdrop of the rising sun\, perched in the highest reaches of our eastern terrace. \nStart your day early with a coffee in hand\, take a moment to reflect\, and watch Boorloo’s east metropolitan area light up from the base of the hills to the steps of the Museum\, scored by our special guests – Unfold. \nUnfold\, two of Boorloo’s most seasoned artists in the world of contemporary art music\, create surprisingly intimate and beautiful music from sounds often heard in more abstract settings. In this longform sunrise set\, they will patiently explore melody\, space and texture using vibraphone\, re-tuned guitars\, found objects\, and a range of other instruments. \nThe Level 3 terrace nook (indoors\, warm\, and undercover) transforms into a serene performance space for this 90-minute experience. \n\n\n\nThis event is sponsored by Pound Coffee \nwho have made a custom roast for the Audible Edge festival \n\n  \n\n\n\nAs Unfold\, Alice Humphries and Thea Rossen explore concepts of space and restraint in a semi-improvised setting. Using found sounds\, keyboards\, electric guitar\, and percussion\, they seek to build sonic landscapes that grow from simple gestures and find beauty in unusual timbral combinations and haunting melodies that rise out of lush textures. Their debut album Glass Heart was released on Tone List records in 2023.

SUMMARY:Wishful Thinking presents Perila (DE)
DESCRIPTION:🧝 Wishful Thinking presents Perila (DE) at PS Art Space\, Walyalup/Fremantle 🧝\n\n~ Perila ~\nPerila is a St. Petersburg-born\, Berlin-based sound and visual artist\, DJ\, performer and poet exploring sensitive borderlines and depths of subtle matter. Her practice centres around textures\, tangibility and spatiality of field recorded sound\, raw emotions\, voice\, poetry\, body and change. Music as a healing and transformative agent; an invitation to open other layers of engagement with reality by means of deep listening\, observation\, presence and mutual dialogue with an audience. \nHer performances and DJ sets are dense and intense narratives drifting through a rich sonic palette immersing a listener into a personal and sensual trip\, while delicate poetry and soft voice breathe with a sense of closeness\, desire and release. She aims to create other sound worlds to get lost and find oneself\, to challenge and overcome boundaries and share this expansion with the Other. \nPerila’s works have been released on Smalltown Supersound\, Sferic\, The Trilogy Tapes\, Shelter Press\, Longform Editions\, Motion Ward\, 3XL\, Paralaxe Editions\, Vaagner\, Boomkat and Lillerne Tapes. SUMMARY:A Book of Hours: Rubiks Collective (MEL)
DESCRIPTION:A Book of Hours is a revelatory screen-dance presentation that features stop-motion film\, together with on-stage and filmed choreography. The live classical contemporary soundtrack is performed by the Melbourne-based Rubiks Collective\, Australia’s most dynamic and vibrant new music ensemble. The stop-motion video works are created by visual artist Sal Cooper and choreographer Gerard Van Dyck. Inspired by the mysteries of time and different ideas of how we spend our days\, A Book of Hours combines stop-motion filmed humans and animation on screen\, choreographed musicians and wind-up toys on stage representing the embodied vulnerability of the human form. Taking the medieval Book of Hours as the central concept of the work\, composer Kate Neal references early Baroque influences (Couperin\, Rameau) to reimagine the early canonical divisions of time. \n“Call it dance or art music or just live performance. Whatever it is – A Book of Hours is the best kind of puzzle.” – The Age

SUMMARY:Revivification
DESCRIPTION:Revivification is an extraordinary immersive exhibition combining sound and cutting-edge biological innovation to bring to life the musical genius of a deceased composer. \nFour years in the making\, Revivification delivers a historic first: the in-vitro (external) ‘brain’ of the late composer Alvin Lucier (1931-2021) creating a new work in real time\, as a live performance over the duration of the exhibition. \nIt is developed by artists Guy Ben-Ary\, Nathan Thompson and Matt Gingold with neuroscientist Stuart Hodgetts based at the University of Western Australia (UWA)\, who have individually spent 25 years pushing boundaries in the biological arts. \nThe physical realisation of Revivification began in 2020 when Alvin Lucier donated his blood for the project. His blood was sent to Harvard Medical School where his white blood cells were reprogrammed into stem cells – the fundamental building blocks of Revivification\, using a process called Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (IPSC) technology. Then\, the Revivification Team transformed (differentiated) Lucier’s stem cells into cerebral organoids: three-dimensional structures that resemble a developing human brain. \nAlvin Lucier stood among the giants of 20th-century experimental music. He transformed how we think about composition by shifting focus from traditional musical elements to the physical properties of sound itself. His work with brain waves\, echolocation\, and room acoustics blurred the lines between music\, science\, and art – an approach that spoke to the artists and researchers at UWA. \nAt the heart of the installation stands a sculptural object that encapsulates the incubator housing Lucier’s ‘in-vitro brain’\, living outside\, and beyond his body (the term ‘in-vitro’ comes from the Latin for ‘in glass’). \nLining the walls are 20 large\, curved brass plates that are both sculptural and the source of the immersive sound environment. Each of the plates is directly connected to the neural activity of Lucier’s brain organoid. As the ‘in-vitro brains” signals pulse through transducers and actuators\, they strike the brass\, creating complex\, sustained resonances that fill the space with sound.
