This experimental sound performance incorporates stainless steel vessels\, water\, salt\, the body and breath\, creating space to connect with ancestors by reimagining and recreating an ocean space. \nFollowing the performance\, Simpson will join artist Shivanjani Lal\, a fellow member of the Indian indentured labourer diaspora\, to discuss her practice and exhibition ām / ammā / mā maram. The rich\, sensory exhibition features objects and paintings that reveal the often-absent narratives of Indian indentured labourers in colonial history.

DESCRIPTION:GOOLUGATUP SOUNDS 14\nw/\nSODA LITE (Lutruwita/Tas)\nJEREMY SEGAL / NAOKO UEMOTO / JOSIAH PADMANABHAM\nFriday 28 July 2023 / from 7pm\n\nAs frosty Makuru gives way to the slowly warming\, brightening season of Djilba\, GOOLUGATUP SOUNDS invites you to its fourteenth ‘Goolugatup Sounds’ – another double bill of unique and inquisitive music by the Derbal Yerrigan riverbend.\nThe soundscapes of Nipaluna/Hobart-based SODA LITE (aka Alex Last) are crafted in response to local environments\, built on field recordings which serve as a ‘mulch’ for the growth of sympathetic timbres\, moods and melodic patterns. In Alex’s words\, each song is an “attempt to embody the slowly ventilating tempo and vibrant agency of earthly realms.” Keyboards cycle through sound-banks to form cascading phrases over pools of nectar-rich ambience\, while deep swollen drones and slurred woodwinds disperse beneath airy\, rain-replenished tones. Over the years\, Soda Lite has released music with US ambient & experimental labels like Not Not Fun\, Constellation Tatsu & Inner Islands. For Goolugatup Sounds\, Soda Lite will be joined by June Last (keys) for a captivating set of live electronics and audiovisual immersion. Meanwhile\, other facets of Alex’s expansive arts practice unfurl in their gallery show ‘Outside Inn’\, opening alongside.\nThe new improvisatory collaboration between JEREMY SEGAL (electronics)\, NAOKO UEMOTO (saxophone) and JOSIAH PADMANABHAM (piano) explores live instruments interacting with generative digital sequencing. Picture tumbling\, computer-generated rhythms with an uncanny half-likeness to human drumming\, mingling with virtuosic piano and saxophone melodics. Between them\, the three burrow deeply and patiently into wild sonic possibilities – the distinctive interplay of each instrument and player’s idiosyncrasies\, strange and beautiful confluences of harmony\, and incalculable arcs of form that might evoke Stockhausen one moment and Arca\, Thelonious Monk or Pharaoh Sanders the next. Having increasingly refined their sound on the dense touring schedule\, they return with a focussed attention on slow-burn unravelling of strange and phenomenal drones\, utilising alto saxophone & zithers as ancillaries of some otherworldly liturgy. \nThe rarely-outed Vanishing Island Group\, led by Lyndon Blue\, is a local supergroup of sorts: a haunting dark-jazz outfit that play glacially slow\, lingering compositions of powerful affect. Acoustic bass\, vibraphone\, flugelhorn\, electric piano\, percussion and highly effected guitar make up an atmospheric sonic tapestry that is unlike anything regularly heard in this place. \nRadio presenter\, musician\, writer and photographer Emma Daisy is best known for an idiosyncratic\, committed and careful presence on RTR.FM 92.1’s Difficult Listening and Golden Apples of the Sun\, and for her considered photographic portraits of bands and musicians throughout Boorloo. As birthday fairy for Tone List’s 7th birthday party she brings her remarkable sound curating sensibilities to Kinds of Light to set the tone for the evening as it flows on\, threading recorded music\, found sound and field recordings in diaphanous weaves.

Plus a special set from Felicity Groom\, and vinyl will be spun by DJ Paul Malone.\n\nYou’ll be able to play with the Lab equipment (if that is your thing) or simply chill out and socialise in the amazing heritage building\, and drink from the cheap bar. DESCRIPTION:Ghost Tunes is a collaborative arts project created by sound artists and writers from Australia and Scotland\, exploring language\, landscape and culture. \nCurrently part of the Fremantle Arts Centre residency program\, Ghost Tunes artists include Cass Lynch (Boorloo/Perth)\, Mei Swan Lim\, Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey (Naarm/Melbourne)\, Theresa Sainty (Lutruwita/Tasmania)\, Cass Ezeji (Scotland)\, Quinie (Scotland)\, in collaboration with Counterflows – an internationally acclaimed Glasgow-based contemporary music festival. \nThrough a series of exchanges which began in 2021\, the artists have created a full-length album and publication. Whilst in Fremantle for their residency they will be presenting a night of performance\, sound\, film and talks. \nARTISTS \nCass Lynch (Boorloo/Perth\, Australia) is a writer and researcher living on Whadjuk Noongar Country. She has recently completed a Creative Writing PhD that explores deep memory features of Noongar oral storytelling tradition; in particular sotries that reference the last ice age and the rise in sea level that followed it. She is a descendant of the Noongar people and a student of the Noongar language. \nMei Swan Lim (Boorloo/Perth\, Australia) is a practicing sound designer and visual artist whose work centres on the environmental\, emotional and spiritual importance of place\, inter-cultural investigation and storytelling. She is also an electronic musician who has been performing and writing under the name Mei Saraswatic since 2010. \nMadeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey (Australia) are Australian artists who create unexpected situations for listening. Their work is driven by curiosity and questioning about sound in human culture and seeks to evolve and engage with new processes and audiences\, through public and participative interventions. \nTheresa Sainty (Lutruwita/Tasmania\, Australia) is a Pakana woman\, from Lutruwita (Tasmania)\, and is part of a very large\, wellknown Tasmanian Aboriginal family. Theresa has worked extensively with Aboriginal Education Services\, DoE where she co-developed and provided Aboriginal Cultural Awareness training\, and produced curriculum resources focusing on Pakana culture; translated script and coached actors in the film The Nightingale\, collaborated on various films and projects and has been an Aboriginal Linguistic Consultant with the palawa kani Language Program of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre since 1997. Theresa recently began a Senior Indigenous Research Scholarship at UTAS. \nCass Ezeji (Scotland) is a singer and performer of critically-acclaimed bands Laps and Golden Teacher. She is interested in Scotland’s role in colonialism and its erasure from our national psyche. Her essays and prose reinsert black and mixed-race narratives into the Scottish context and call for accountability. \nQuinie (Scotland) aka Josie Vallely\, is based in Glasgow. She sings primarily in Scots\, with a style inspired by the traditions of Scottish Traveller singers Lizzie Higgins (1929 – 1993) and her mother Jeannie Robertson (1908 – 1975).

DESCRIPTION:As part of a three-week residency at PICA\, Joshua Pether\, Janine Oxenham and Helah Milroy revisit their durational performance ritual The Reckoning\, created in 2021 through a creative development at PICA. \n\n\nThe first performance outcome was a seven-hour performance ritual that utilised First Nations wisdom and knowledge whilst also taking inspiration from Butoh\, a form of Japanese dance theatre developed in response to the trauma of the bombing of Hiroshima. The development involved the performers ‘reckoning’ with themselves and geographical sites of significance to First Nations people. Pether\, Oxenham and Milroy revisit their performance methodology\, extending the work to a 16-hour durational performance. \nWorkshops take place 10am-6pm (view the PICA website for details). Performance takes place at 9pm-2am. \n\nWitness the moment of reckoning.\nResponsive to history\, place and time\, the knowledge of bodies access stored and hidden information. Midnight has come and so too has an understanding – we must build the monument \n\n\nWitnesses are invited to experience a contemporary dance/theatre performance across five hours in the PICA Performance Space. Visitors are welcome to come and go for this part of the ritual\, featuring music and sound created by improvisational musician Josten Myburgh.

DESCRIPTION:A recital by two young saxophonists united by a shared interest in improvisation and experimental practice on their instruments. Each artist will perform an ambitious solo work\, and perform a duo improvisation together. \nSaccades by Ted Moore is an electro-acoustic solo work using feedback processes and neural networks to emulate the process of saccadic masking in human vision. Saturated\, layered and stimulating\, it includes striking interplay between acoustic and electronic sound\, and elaborate\, contemporary processes for generating electro-acoustic sound textures. \nA manorina nest at the edge by Josten Myburgh is an extended electro-acoustic solo that takes the poetics of ecotones and edge effects in ecosystems as a departure point for intricate workings with field recordings\, live electronics and acoustic alto saxophone. Undulating\, gentle and unusual\, it is the next in a series of works by the composer which strive to understand emerging relationships between place\, self and music. The piece was recently performed at MONO (Room40\, Brisbane) and Wakushoppu (Punctum\, Prague); this is it’s Western Australian premiere.

Featuring live performances of song\, dance\, visual art\, spoken word and puppetry at the famous Dyoondalup Point Walter\, this annual celebration asks you to pause\, stop and begin again; reflect on the year that’s been and the year to come. \n5.00pm: Arrive and be welcomed to the grounds of Dyoondalup Point Walter with a personal Acknowledgement of Country by the fire\, before exploring the foreshore at your own pace\, embracing the atmosphere of roving performers\, enjoying the delicious winter spread food and hot drinks as the sun goes down and you await the lanterns of the night. \n6.00pm: Make your way up to the hill and find performances that will capture the imagination of children and adults alike. With a musical line-up featuring Jet Kye Chong and fellow percussionist Euphina Yap\, an installation sound work by Jake Webb and Lyndon Blue\, the compositions of Julia Wallace\, as well as performances from Brooke Leeder and Dancers\, and first time performers\, recent graduates from the Stories under the Stars workshops\, facilitated especially for the event by City Libraries and the Storytellers Guild of WA. \nWarm yourself by a fire\, toast marshmallows\, and be mesmerised by story and shadow puppetry by Rickeeta Walley as well as up-close puppet work from Tessa Laing. \n7.00pm: Toward the end of the night\, witness a grand finale from atmospheric band and jazz ensemble\, Vanishing Island Group\, with their never-before-heard music composed for the event\, alongside poet and Elder Gerrard Shaw. \n7.30pm: As a final coming together of community\, you’re invited to plunge into the icy waters of the Swan River to renew your energy and inspire a lively year to come.
