DESCRIPTION:The return of our long-dormant DIY performance residency series is made possible in partnership with new studio space and gallery _____g.s. \nThis performance residency series is about offering a musician an opportunity to “sharpen the sword” and test experimental ideas through back-to-back nightly concerts. This is a rarity in Boorloo\, where experimental gigs are still relatively infrequent. But it’s essential to some experimental music practices\, which thrive on the energy brought by an audience. \nWe’re pleased to host Raras Sukardi for our first redux of this series. In recent years Raras has been determinedly researching freeform musics throughout Asia by travelling and collaborating. She usually works with suling\, clarinet\, tubes\, noise & feedback. We don’t know what she’ll do for these shows yet. Come find out with us (: \n_____g.s’s gallery space is very small\, and these performance are deliberately low pressure & micro-scale. You need to book in advance to attend. \nAbout Raras: \nRaras Sukardi (she/her) is an Indonesian-born\, Australian-raised clarinettist\, actively exploring improvised and experimental music. Her Indonesian heritage shapes her identity\, creating a deep sense of belonging and natural connection towards Indonesian culture\, people\, and land. This connection inspires her artistic journey\, driving her to explore the interrelationship between art\, nature\, and spiritual energy. Currently engaged in clarinet teaching\, Raras continually seeks to learn new techniques and broaden her community to deepen her artistic practice. \nAccessibility: \nThe performances are held in a very small space which will likely feel crowded. Limited seating is available. Lighting may be dim. Performances may be very loud at times. The space is wheelchair accessible via the courtyard entrance\, although the wheelchair accessible bathroom on-site is being serviced at the time of writing. Hypnotic downtuned super fuzzed out bass and pummeling drum machine emerge through layers upon layers of droning feedbacking guitars as a space echo drowned vocal relays the bleakness of complete and utter hopelessness.\nThe songs navigate themes of abandonment\, body dysmorphia\, gender dysphoria\, suicidal ideation and homicidal fantasies\, the lyrics derived from neurodivergent and PTSD melt downs. Set within a repurposed shipping container and lined with locally sourced timber\, this installation fuses the restorative heat of traditional sauna culture with a transformative sonic experience. This intimate space invites you to sweat\, float and dissolve into a curated sonic journey. \nAcross a series of 60-minute sessions\, sound artists\, musicians\, poets\, and cultural leaders create immersive soundscapes designed to deepen connection to place. Inspired by the Fremantle Biennale’s 2025 theme of sanctuary\, each session is an exploration in active listening\, collective care and embodied transformation. Sound changes with the time of day: morning meditations and vocal landscapes drift toward late-night DJ sets and experimental bass vibrations. Your body becomes a conduit for deep frequency — buoyant\, dissolving\, alive. \nWhether you’re drawn by tradition\, curiosity or the lure of sound and heat\, Sound Sauna offers a space to reflect\, to soften and to feel\, floating between breath and rhythm. Come alone or with others. Sit\, listen\, sweat. Let the ocean hum at your back. The warmth will carry you and the sound will stay with you. \n  \n\n\nStuart Orchard is a West Australian composer-performer\, sound designer and educator. His work with ambient piano soundscapes\, aeolian music\, self-made string instruments and adventurous rock music have seen him perform around the world\, including at SoundOut Festival (Canberra)\, Tanzforum (Berlin)\, and the Walyalup Weekend of Improvised Music (Perth). His music has been used in the ABC TV production The Heights (2019); he has also been commissioned by Tone List (Audible Edge Festival\, 2020) and by Joseph Simons’ for his solo choreographic work First Thing’s First\, which toured in over 40 venues worldwide. He has worked\, recorded and played with influential musicians across genres\, including Mark Reeder\, Jean Luc Guionnet\, Jim Denley & Jodie Rottle. He is active playing in an array of bands and improvised collaborations across Perth. \nStuart is interested in immersive listening\, and the connection of musicians and listeners to their environment through its natural forces & stories. He has a Bachelor of Music (First Class Honours) in music composition\, where he focused on interactive aeolian instruments & sculptures. He has undertaken further intensive studies with Billy Martin (The New School\, NYC) and Jim Denley (via Tone List)\, and also holds qualifications in writing & secondary education. \nLIVE SET – Stuart will use his aeolian (wind-powered) instruments to create an improvised piece shaped by the environmental forces at Manjaree.

DESCRIPTION:Sounds of Some Summer is a sprawling soundscape by Fremantle-based artist Bruno Booth\, turning the city itself into an instrument. Across Walyalup (Fremantle)\, five microphones are discreetly installed — tuned to the sounds of the everyday — the wind\, port\, voices\, traffic\, and silence. These live audio streams feed into a central mixing station at the installation’s “epicenter\,” where the city’s sounds\, as summer awakens\, are remixed in real time. \nSometimes quiet\, sometimes dissonant\, the soundscape is in constant flux — modulated by a rotating cast of invited “conductors and performers”\, curated by Lyndon Blue. Using distortion\, delay\, and instruments to sculpt spontaneous compositions from everyday noise\, each performer will create a layered audio experience that’s never the same twice. \nInspired by the brain’s Default Mode Network — a state of mind-wandering triggered by ambient stimuli — Booth’s installation offers a space for gentle drift\, introspection and imaginative thought. It’s a work that invites you to listen differently: to find new meaning in the familiar\, to be still inside a moving world. Bruno Booth’s innovative practice spans sculpture\, technology and participation. With Some Sounds of Some Summer\, he offers a quiet proposition: that a city might be found in its background noise.

DESCRIPTION:A polyphonic signal fractures and scatters throughout the space — dispersed across a suspended field of loudspeakers. Cello-like tones rise and recoil in response to an inaudible threat\, echoing the murmuration of prey animals under pressure. Mostly recently visiting to perform with a quintet in Perth Festival\, Anthony’s solo electronic work is bracing\, elaborate and multi-layered – and plays tricks on your ears. Anthony is best known for enduring collaborations with avant-metal icons like Mike Patton & Stephen O’Malley but has an extraordinarily diverse output across the fields of orchestral\, chamber music\, film soundtrack\, sound installation and good hangs. \nRiccardo la Foresta is a curator & percussionist based in Modena. His solo work explores the drummophone – a self-made instrument that pushes compressed air onto drumheads in order to make them sing. Instrument-builder geeks can nerd out on the amazing things these instruments do\, whilst the immersive quality of the sound makes it easy to forget what’s making it and bathe in washes of raspy organ-like drones. \nStefano Pilia is a composer and baritone guitarist whose solo works investigate a sculptural\, almost orchestral palette from the instrument through electroacoustic processing using pedals and modular synthesis. Based in Bologna\, his diverse collaborators include Mike Watt\, Phill Niblock\, Rokia Traorè and Valerio Tricoli. \nZoe Koong is a Boorloo-based composer exploring dark industrial music that centres her fuzzed out bass guitar playing\, drawing on a range of influences like Grouper\, Ethel Cain\, David Lynch & Natural Snow Buildings to make unsettling sonic stories.

Using payphones as field recorders\, Zev calls public phones across the Western\, Central\, and Southern desert regions\, capturing both conversations with strangers and the silence of the desert when calls are answered by no one. \nThis evolving collection of audio\, transcriptions\, and photographs examines the voyeuristic nature of these interactions\, offering a poetic reflection on the intrusion into public spaces. Through this work\, Zev investigates long-distance communication and the coexistence of built environments with the vast\, arid landscapes they inhabit. \nSanche Zev (b. 1990\, Boorloo | Perth) is a photo-based artist whose work spans photography\, print\, sound\, and artist books. His practice engages the imagination to challenge and rethink contemporary notions of technology and art. Through designing installations\, Zev takes a multidisciplinary approach to documentary art\, using it as an entry point to create narratives that explore our understanding of human interaction and the landscapes we inhabit. \nWorking with experimental sound and listening practices to evoke shared experiences has become a key aspect of his work\, fostering conversation\, and generating new ideas. Zev is deeply curious about connecting with the unfamiliar; this sense of wonder has fueled his storytelling. His most recent project\, Must Be Somewhere\, is an ongoing exploration of listening to arid landscapes. The culmination of Sze’s Site-Specific Residency; WIP – The Last Remaining Stand. \nSze will be performing ’The Last Stand’\, a digital haunting in two parts: constructed from field recordings\, 3D scanning and an autonomous digital instrument made from a map of the area. \nAbout the artist: \nW. Sze Tsang / samarobryn is an audio-visual artist working across temporalities and histories. Tsang’s practice explores how combining sounds\, visuals\, geospatial information and environmental data can express the multi-layered narratives on history and climate within place. \nThe Site-Specific Residency is a paid opportunity\, and realised through our open call and the generous donations of artists and the community.These paid opportunities are the backbone of our programming. CURRENT recognises the time\, intellect\, labour and skill that an artist/creative/curator expends in creating works and making them available to the public. We hope to lead by example\, paying artists for their contribution to society and creating the change we wish to see. Come down to the Bird for off-kilter DJ sets pushing and pulling between the rapidfire rhythms of jungle & footwork and the introspective textures of downtempo\, ambient & electroacoustic music. Or\, in less coded words: a show of unpredictable\, sonically immaculate and really fun music to get moved by. \nCurrent Bias has been working at a textured & wild approach to dance music since relocating from Boorloo to Te-Whanganui-a-Tara some years ago. The raised part of the courtyard is not wheelchair accessible\, but the show will take place in the main indoor space\, so this won’t affect your ability to participate in the event. \nThe show will be loud and musically high-stim and fast paced. The Bird has free earplugs available at the bar. \nThe show is indoors and whilst the front and back doors are left open during the show\, its otherwise not a well-ventilated space. It may be crowded. \nLighting in the space is very dim. No strobes or fast flashing lights (>5Hz) will be used. \nAcknowledgments\nTone List operates on Whadjuk Noongar boodja: sovereign Country for eternity. The duo present their latest album GLINT and share the story of its making with musician-curator\, Josten Myburgh. \n💠 \nSaturday 20 September\nState Library of WA\, Southern Room (Level 4)\n2pm – 4pm\nEntry by donation \n💠 \nRoss Bolleter & Eduardo Cossio are among the most prolific experimental musicians in Boorloo. Ross is a composer\, poet\, and Zen master described by The Wire as “a true original of Australian composition”. For more than four decades he has explored the unique and resonant sounds of Ruined Pianos. \nEduardo is a musician\, visual artist\, and the organiser of Outcome Unknown. He is known for an idiosyncratic approach to electro-acoustic music using de-tuned zithers\, voice\, and harmonicas. \nThe duo began working together in 2022. They have since released Dark Shine (2023)\, Such & Such (2024) – both on the French label Thödol Records – and Glint (2025). Their co-written article ‘Casting a Net for Synchronicities’ will be published by UnMagazine in September. \n💠 \nJosten Myburgh is a composer\, improviser\, saxophonist and organiser of experimental music. They are co-director of not-for-profit organisation Tone List\, and since 2017 has curated their Art Music Award-winning Audible Edge festival. \n💠 \nAccessibility \nThe public lifts go to the 3rd Floor and from there the Great Southern Room is accessible via two flights of stairs.
