Throughout the event try having a yuzu soda or prosecco alongside handmade veggie samosas & vegan patra by Khanna (Means Food). \nJean-Philippe Gross is an electroacoustic musician based in France. He is a self-taught musician and an exceptional improviser on the no-input mixer (a mixing desk transformed into an instrument using feedback). Jean-Philippe’s music is marked by its compositional precision\, decisiveness\, and attention to the grain and texture of lengthy sustained drones. Jean-Philippe sustains collaborations with forward-thinking musicians globally including Clare Cooper\, Jean-Luc Guionnet\, and the orchestra ONCEIM. Contemplative\, risky\, frisson-inducing stuff. \nRich Wh is a local electronic musician working with a refined sound palette on modular synthesisers. In his music\, chaotically interacting drones\, pulses and crackles are sounded with a sense of veiled darkness. He performs and releases frequently in the orbit of Burnt Seed Records\, NoizeMaschin!! and the Boorloo modular synthesis community. \nMorals and Ethics are the emergent DJ collaboration between indie scene mainstays Jameson Feakes & Rhian Todhunter (the former a Tone List founding member\, the latter of outgoing Out to Lunch fame). Drawing on his collaborations with Mark Simmonds and Mark Fell\, as well as influences from Gamelan traditions and Carnatic rhythmic systems\, Guthrie will guide participants through complex rhythmic concepts in both theory and practice. This session is ideal for drummers\, electronic musicians\, and rhythmically curious artists interested in pushing time beyond the grid. \nPlease bring: Your instrument. He plays solo using different combinations of drums\, percussion\, amplification and electronics\, and leads the contemporary hybrid percussion / gamelan group ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH. His music has been released on labels such as Black Truffle\, Editions Mego\, Erstwhile\, Clean Feed\, Gaffer Records\, Hasana Editions\, 23five\, iDEAL and his own label Antboy Music. \nGuthrie first made a name for himself within the Australian jazz scene\, establishing himself at a young age as a major presence by winning the Wangaratta National Jazz Awards for drums in 1997 and going on to perform with many of Australia’s most celebrated jazz musicians such as Mark Simmonds\, Julien Wilson and Ren Walters. In the new millennium\, his work took a long detour away from the drum kit through junk electronics\, extreme amplification and electro-acoustic techniques\, documented on a series of solo and collaborative recordings from these years. \nAlongside continuing his electro-acoustic work\, in the last decade\, Guthrie has returned to the drums with a vengeance\, developing a series of solo works marked by a radical single-mindedness\, from relentless rhythmic workouts to earth-quaking explorations of the bass frequencies of gongs and other metal percussion instruments. In the crowded world of free jazz/improv percussion\, Guthrie’s work is distinguished from the delicately pointillist approach of much European improvisation by its rhythmic sophistication\, unashamed virtuosity and undeniable physicality\, touching on aspects of world musics from Javanese gamelan to South Indian Carnatic music. \nAs a dedicated grassroots and DIY concert organiser\, while still a student in Melbourne Guthrie (alongside Ren Walters) established the weekly concert series ‘Improvised Tuesdays’\, now known as the Make It Up Club\, Australia’s longest running performance series for improvised and experimental music. On moving to Nantes\, Guthrie joined the collective CABLE#\, curating and organising regular concerts and an annual festival. \nGuthrie has released over 50 Albums\, as both soloist and in collaboration\, on labels such as his own Antboy Music\, and also Black Truffle\, Editions Mego\, Gaffer Records\, Ideal\, Ipacac and Clean Feed. A 2 hr workshop will be facilitated by the very special AliceC and Annika Moses\, artists who bring their brilliant knowledge and passion for improvisation\, embodiment\, movement and sound. Following this is a 1-hr long open improvisational performance for workshop participants\, with an audience. Everyone is welcome to join the workshop (RSVP below!) and the performance is for public viewing! \nAliceC says \n‘Through my love and commitment to improvisation\, I am interested in cultivating practices that shift\, transform and elucidate states of moving and being.’ \nAlice is an interdisciplinary artist\, working in dance\, film\, performance and installation\, with a 40 year history of contemporary performance making. She is a provocative and versatile performer whose enduring aesthetic enquiry into the moving body creates work that interrogates and disrupts social and cultural narratives. The materiality of her work emerges from an attention to inner and outer worlds\, inviting an intimacy with the body and place\, wrestling an entwinement of personal/artistic\, colonial and planetary histories. Alice has been an educator and mentor to a generation of Australian artists\, influencing diverse disciplines of dance\, theatre\, writing\, sound\, visual art\, sculpture and film making. Since returning to Boorloo/Perth in 2022 she has been actively engaged with STRUT Dance teaching and mentoring young and mid-career artists. Her most recent work terra first realised as performance\, Holmes à Court Gallery\, Perth (2024) and further film iterations by Cobie Orger with global distribution as a 3-channel 4K video installation and single channel HD video. \nAnnika says \n‘Every musician has a body\, though Western music has spent centuries trying to obscure this fact\, and every movement artist makes sound. Since the beginning of my improv practice in 2016\, I have been curious about the ways musicians and movement artists can get slippery with those labels\, cultivating curiosity in the between-space that is neither Sound nor Dance but something more like Listen.’ \nAnnika lives and makes on Whadjuk Noongar land in Boorloo (Perth)\, so-called Australia. DESCRIPTION:Tone List presents a lineup of interstate-local collaborations at Local & Aesthetic. Two high-contrast duos exploring thoughtful blends of electro-acoustic sound\, one dynamic & noisy\, the other evasive & subtle. \nAviva Endean & Josten Myburgh have recently been experimenting with a duo language that combines softly humming layers of electronics generated by sustain pedals\, under their acoustic clarinet & saxophone. Playing at whisper-quiet volumes and gliding in and out of silence\, the electronic tones are like a mirage behind the acoustic layer: all the sounds weaved together\, almost indistinguishable. This is their first live performance of this project after recording it on Dja Dja Wurrung Country earlier this year. \nMaking Out (Rosa Bassett) and Izzy French meet for the first time in a first-meeting performance. With a shared investment in noise\, electro-acoustic improvisation and experimental rock music\, both artists employ games\, restrictions and challenges to discover new possibilities in improvisation and composition\, and are active organisers in their respective scenes. They work with aesthetics that can at times be bracing & brutal and at others dynamic\, intense and unusual. DESCRIPTION:Artists Ben Frost and Tom Mùller collaborate on Whalefall\, a new temporary work conceived in response to the landmark Port Beach Shed — a skeletal\, stand-alone structure that stands sentinel at the intersection of Tydeman and Port Beach Roads\, gazing out over the vast Indian Ocean. \nThe work pays homage to a rare and solemn event: the appearance of a lone sperm whale\, the largest of the toothed whales\, which came dangerously close to Port Beach before becoming stranded on a sandbar near Rockingham. Despite efforts to assist\, the whale died\, leaving behind a haunting presence. \nWhalefall transforms the existing edifice into a sanctuary of sound and light — a spectral memorial to this marine giant. The structure becomes an illuminated carcass\, pulsing with sonic echoes that reference the whale’s extraordinary acoustic world. Sperm whales communicate and echolocate through powerful clicks\, trumpets\, and codas\, with vocalisations reaching up to 230 decibels — the loudest of any animal on Earth. \nIn this work\, Frost and Mùller evoke the ghostly resonance of these underwater signals\, reimagining the shed as both a beacon and a requiem — a place where land meets sea\, memory meets myth\, and silence is filled with the language of giants.

DESCRIPTION:The return of our long-dormant DIY performance residency series is made possible in partnership with new studio space and gallery _____g.s. \nThis performance residency series is about offering a musician an opportunity to “sharpen the sword” and test experimental ideas through back-to-back nightly concerts. This is a rarity in Boorloo\, where experimental gigs are still relatively infrequent. But it’s essential to some experimental music practices\, which thrive on the energy brought by an audience. \nWe’re pleased to host Raras Sukardi for our first redux of this series. In recent years Raras has been determinedly researching freeform musics throughout Asia by travelling and collaborating. She usually works with suling\, clarinet\, tubes\, noise & feedback. We don’t know what she’ll do for these shows yet. Come find out with us (: \n_____g.s’s gallery space is very small\, and these performance are deliberately low pressure & micro-scale. This connection inspires her artistic journey\, driving her to explore the interrelationship between art\, nature\, and spiritual energy. Hypnotic downtuned super fuzzed out bass and pummeling drum machine emerge through layers upon layers of droning feedbacking guitars as a space echo drowned vocal relays the bleakness of complete and utter hopelessness.\nThe songs navigate themes of abandonment\, body dysmorphia\, gender dysphoria\, suicidal ideation and homicidal fantasies\, the lyrics derived from neurodivergent and PTSD melt downs. Set within a repurposed shipping container and lined with locally sourced timber\, this installation fuses the restorative heat of traditional sauna culture with a transformative sonic experience. This intimate space invites you to sweat\, float and dissolve into a curated sonic journey. \nAcross a series of 60-minute sessions\, sound artists\, musicians\, poets\, and cultural leaders create immersive soundscapes designed to deepen connection to place. Inspired by the Fremantle Biennale’s 2025 theme of sanctuary\, each session is an exploration in active listening\, collective care and embodied transformation. Sound changes with the time of day: morning meditations and vocal landscapes drift toward late-night DJ sets and experimental bass vibrations. Your body becomes a conduit for deep frequency — buoyant\, dissolving\, alive. \nWhether you’re drawn by tradition\, curiosity or the lure of sound and heat\, Sound Sauna offers a space to reflect\, to soften and to feel\, floating between breath and rhythm. Come alone or with others. Sit\, listen\, sweat. Let the ocean hum at your back. The warmth will carry you and the sound will stay with you. \n  \n\n\nStuart Orchard is a West Australian composer-performer\, sound designer and educator. His work with ambient piano soundscapes\, aeolian music\, self-made string instruments and adventurous rock music have seen him perform around the world\, including at SoundOut Festival (Canberra)\, Tanzforum (Berlin)\, and the Walyalup Weekend of Improvised Music (Perth). His music has been used in the ABC TV production The Heights (2019); he has also been commissioned by Tone List (Audible Edge Festival\, 2020) and by Joseph Simons’ for his solo choreographic work First Thing’s First\, which toured in over 40 venues worldwide. He has worked\, recorded and played with influential musicians across genres\, including Mark Reeder\, Jean Luc Guionnet\, Jim Denley & Jodie Rottle. He is active playing in an array of bands and improvised collaborations across Perth. \nStuart is interested in immersive listening\, and the connection of musicians and listeners to their environment through its natural forces & stories. He has a Bachelor of Music (First Class Honours) in music composition\, where he focused on interactive aeolian instruments & sculptures. He has undertaken further intensive studies with Billy Martin (The New School\, NYC) and Jim Denley (via Tone List)\, and also holds qualifications in writing & secondary education. \nLIVE SET – Stuart will use his aeolian (wind-powered) instruments to create an improvised piece shaped by the environmental forces at Manjaree.

DESCRIPTION:ALT//THURSDAYTHURSDAY 13 NOV 2025 :: THE BIRD :: BOORLOO\nYOUR MOTHERS DISGUSTING WINDOW from Naarm (Melbourne)\, Australia released their self titled debut album on limited edition cassette and digital September 7th (night of the Harvest Moon) on Marfa Lights records (https://marfalightsrecords.bandcamp.com/…/your-mothers…). YOUR MOTHERS DISGUSTING WINDOW is a solo project from Darlene Aaron and features a revolving live backup “band” whose only responsibility is to create walls of feedback for Darlene to play sternum dissolving sludge over the top of. Hypnotic downtuned super fuzzed out bass and pummeling drum machine emerge through layers upon layers of droning feedbacking guitars as a space echo drowned vocal relays the bleakness of complete and utter hopelessness.\nThe songs navigate themes of abandonment\, body dysmorphia\, gender dysphoria\, suicidal ideation and homicidal fantasies\, the lyrics derived from neurodivergent and PTSD melt downs. The live shows are a complete sensory overwhelm that drowns the audience in relentless miserable and punishing soundwaves. Darlene herself has been a prolific if somewhat reclusive artist releasing music through various projects both solo and in collaborations over a career spanning 20 years on cassette\, 7”\, 12” and digital through a variety of independent labels. She has released music as AA Matheson\, Bison Grass\, Boquillas\, WE1 XAM\, Jenny Hickingbotham band\, and DARLENE. DESCRIPTION:Sounds of Some Summer is a sprawling soundscape by Fremantle-based artist Bruno Booth\, turning the city itself into an instrument. Across Walyalup (Fremantle)\, five microphones are discreetly installed — tuned to the sounds of the everyday — the wind\, port\, voices\, traffic\, and silence. These live audio streams feed into a central mixing station at the installation’s “epicenter\,” where the city’s sounds\, as summer awakens\, are remixed in real time. \nSometimes quiet\, sometimes dissonant\, the soundscape is in constant flux — modulated by a rotating cast of invited “conductors and performers”\, curated by Lyndon Blue. Using distortion\, delay\, and instruments to sculpt spontaneous compositions from everyday noise\, each performer will create a layered audio experience that’s never the same twice. \nInspired by the brain’s Default Mode Network — a state of mind-wandering triggered by ambient stimuli — Booth’s installation offers a space for gentle drift\, introspection and imaginative thought. It’s a work that invites you to listen differently: to find new meaning in the familiar\, to be still inside a moving world. Bruno Booth’s innovative practice spans sculpture\, technology and participation. With Some Sounds of Some Summer\, he offers a quiet proposition: that a city might be found in its background noise.

DESCRIPTION:“good-time-math-prog-disco-slow-head-banging” – Improved Sequence \nFor the weird rock dogs out there Tone List is excited to bring over “the world’s only Australian-Italian electroacoustic noise rock trio”\, Sulla Lingua. An alliance between Italian out-improvisers Riccardo la Foresta & Stefano Pilia and the prolific Castlemaine-based composer Anthony Pateras\, the trio’s live sets are a truly smashing compendium of drum kit hammering\, baritone guitar melodies and Doepfer modular drones. This happens over layers of samples procured from the sonic experimentation each of them is staunchly dedicated to in their solo practice. Silly brainiac rock for those inclined towards the likes of The Dead C\, Slint or Lotto. \nJoining them on the night is a solo set of unprecedented noisiness from Sara Salt (of hardcore quartet Nervous) & post-metal & free improv experimentalist Gracie Smith back in fine form on solo drum kit. \nEvent schedule\n  \n7:30pm – doors \n8:00pm – Gracie Smith \n8:50pm – Sara Salt \n9:40pm – Sulla Lingua \n10:30pm-ish – finish \nSee also \nEach member of Sulla Lingua will play a solo set alongside a performance by Zoe Koong on November 5 at Goolugatup Heathcote\, doors at 6pm! \nAccessibility\nDownstairs at The Buffalo Club is wheelchair accessible via ramp. We have free earplugs available. \nThe show is indoors and whilst the front door is left open during the show\, its otherwise not a well-ventilated space. \nLighting in the performance area is fairly dim; the back part of the venue and the area around the pool table are more brightly lit. Mostly recently visiting to perform with a quintet in Perth Festival\, Anthony’s solo electronic work is bracing\, elaborate and multi-layered – and plays tricks on your ears. Anthony is best known for enduring collaborations with avant-metal icons like Mike Patton & Stephen O’Malley but has an extraordinarily diverse output across the fields of orchestral\, chamber music\, film soundtrack\, sound installation and good hangs. \nRiccardo la Foresta is a curator & percussionist based in Modena. His solo work explores the drummophone – a self-made instrument that pushes compressed air onto drumheads in order to make them sing. Instrument-builder geeks can nerd out on the amazing things these instruments do\, whilst the immersive quality of the sound makes it easy to forget what’s making it and bathe in washes of raspy organ-like drones. \nStefano Pilia is a composer and baritone guitarist whose solo works investigate a sculptural\, almost orchestral palette from the instrument through electroacoustic processing using pedals and modular synthesis. Based in Bologna\, his diverse collaborators include Mike Watt\, Phill Niblock\, Rokia Traorè and Valerio Tricoli. \nZoe Koong is a Boorloo-based composer exploring dark industrial music that centres her fuzzed out bass guitar playing\, drawing on a range of influences like Grouper\, Ethel Cain\, David Lynch & Natural Snow Buildings to make unsettling sonic stories.
