SUMMARY:Decibel: Sound Drawing in Space
DESCRIPTION:This is a world premiere program of chamber music as you will never had experienced it – music that uses creative forms of notations exhibited in 3D space. Facilitated by media artist Sohan Ariel Hayes\, the music notation is animated in projections that are shared with the audience as well as the musicians\, creating an immersive and innovative performance experience for both. Expect experimental and exciting sounds you may not have heard before\, alongside immersive\, animated video and lighting that challenge your idea of what a music score can be. This is Decibel’s first and only performance in WA for 2023. \nWorld premieres from Brenda Gifford (NSW)\, Kate Milligan (WA)\, Donna Hewitt (NSW)\, Kezia Yap (NSW)\, Dave Brown (VIC) as well as WA premieres of music by Jaslyn Robertson (VIC) and a special reworking of Hungarian composer György Ligeti (1923-2006) by Decibel member Lindsay Vickery to honour the composers’ centenary. \n“Adventurous\, inquisitive\, challenging. Decibel honour and sabotage modernist traditions.” Cool Perth Nights.\n“Decibel blows the traditional out of the water” Limelight.\nFounded in WA in 2009 by artistic director Cat Hope\, Decibel are world-leading interpreters of graphic notations and pioneer digital score formats for chamber music composition and performance. Whilst rooted in western art music tradition\, Decibel aim to remove stylistic boundaries in their commissioning and performance approaches\, which focus on the combination of acoustic and electronic sounds in experimental music performance settings. Decibel have extensive experience in presented these ‘visual scores’  – both in exhibition environments (Drawn From Sound (2012)\, Sounding Art (2017) and their regular concerts – this program takes their work with music notation to a completely new level.

DESCRIPTION:Tone List presents the release of Glass Heart\, a new album by Unfold\, the duo of Thea Rossen & Alice Humphries\, launching in the striking acoustic of the Swanbourne Church of the Resurrection and making use of the venue’s grand piano.\n\nhttps://weunfold.bandcamp.com/\n\nThe duo will be joined by a rare set by experimental post-ambient trio Pale Ribbons Tossed Into the Dark working the grand piano into their dense soundworld.\n\nhttps://prtd.bandcamp.com/\n\nOn ‘Glass Heart’ Unfold filter melodic fragments and improvisational moments\, looking to weave these materials into music that coalesces around singular points of focus. The duo explore space\, both temporally and acoustically\, and restraint\, finding ways to work with a limited set of materials and manage their sound making with great care over time. Throughout Glass Heart the listener is presented with the deep resonance of the bass drum\, which provides a bed for sparse moments of melody to flourish\, flowing from the prepared piano and open stringed scordatura electric guitar. Moments of sustain and near silence are punctuated with bold strikes of the bass drum that can be felt in the chest and highlight the scale in the work\, the small fragile sounds of glass\, marbles\, seeds and bells rendered as such in relation to the drum. True to their name\, Unfold work through attention and care to unravel\, unpack and unfold the vast aural phenomenon emergent from simple gestures and present a sonic landscape for the listeners’ patient investigation.\nFrom the artists:\n“Having previously worked together in a performer / composer relationship\, Unfold came about through a shared desire to work together in a more collaborative and spontaneous context\, where we both operate as performers/improvisers/composers and blur the lines between these roles.In the time leading up to making Unfold\, we were both stripped back by personal experiences of parenthood\, early postpartum\, loss and grief. Carving out this creative space with each other was a way for us to reconnect to our creative selves and the pure joy of making and playing with sounds that we find beautiful.We began these pieces as improvisations based on a single idea that each of us brought\, either a melody\, an object\, or a textural idea. Unfold is about clarity and simplicity. Stripping an idea back and letting something grow slowly.”\nDoors from 7:00pm\, with live music starting a little after.\nTickets are pay-what-you-can\, with a suggested price of $25 or $15 depending on your means. The below text is identical to the main exhibition event on our listing.] \nWe are extremely excited to announce our first SHOW: EXHIBITION OR PROJECT; Samuel Beilby’s Machinic Paragenesis. \nSamuel’s work captured us instantly and have put together an exhibition that just had to be part of CURRENT. This is one of those shows that you just have to experience to grasp. In Samuel’s own words: \n\n\n‘On one-hand\, it can be recognised as a DIY experiment in guerrilla field recording and video art-making that amounts to both an exposition of capitalism’s definitive exploitation of the natural world\, and the generative potential of noise as an artistic material for charting complex tensions particular to our late-capitalist reality. \nOn the other-hand\, the project ironically drags noise back into the meat-grinder\, commodifying the emancipated remnants of a labour built upon harvested bio-organisation and amounting to a diminution of the liberatory potential of noise in production systems. This is an experiment that has produced a paradoxical outcome\, in which product and byproduct\, luxury and necessity\, repetition and difference are blurred\, confused and hybridised.’

DESCRIPTION:Come on Monday\, November 13\, 6pm for performances by poet Andrew Sutherland and sound artist Sally Ann McIntyre. \nAndrew Sutherland is a Queer Poz (PLHIV) writer\, poet and theatre-maker in Boorloo making some of the most challenging and intruiging work in town (in this author’s opinion). His work moves between confronting experimentalism and pop culture affection deftly\, sometimes even managing to make one seem like the other. He will read some of his amazing poems. \nSally Ann McIntyre visits from Naarm to play at the Fremantle Biennale on November 9. Here she’s offering something better suited to a small space and close listening attention\, rather than the windy outdoor festival location. Her work speaks volumes about extinction\, loss and absence using sampled documentary audio\, radio silence\, dead air\, static and interference. \nAs always there will be dinner to share. It will probably be something needlessly elaborate. It will be vegetarian and will accommodate everyone’s dietary needs. The bathroom is not wheelchair accessible (the entranceway is narrow\, and around a bend). Happy to assist with access if needed but the bathroom situation sucks. As we pay all of our ticket money to artists\, we have previously covered these costs by including them in grant budgets where appropriate. Our applications both this and last year towards project funding for 2023 were all rejected\, leaving us without this usual financial base. \nHere is why those things are worth paying for: \n– our NFP status lets us apply for and auspice funding to support projects in the scene. We frequently volunteer our time to do this and have paid tens of thousands in artist fees to musicians through our own projects and via auspices. \n– we’re a channel for philanthropic support for the scene and have supported tax-deductible donations being directed to pay artists for performances and new work \n– we advocate for the scene internationally and have aided in getting WA artists to festivals and concert series’ interstate and overseas through the networks we’ve established via the label and our concert programming. \n– our standing as an award-winning\, critically acclaimed platform allows us to write valuable letters of support to support internationally touring artists in their applications for funding inbound travel\, and Perth artists acquiring funding for projects. We do this dozens of times a year. \n– we advocate for local institutions and festivals to take the local experimental music scene seriously\, involving artists from the scene in their programming and paying artists and curators proper rates for their work. \n– artists on our roster receive benefits like free BandCamp Pro subscriptions for their own profiles. \n– we can maintain a digital archive of our activities for posterity. \nWe welcome questions and comments from you all! \n  \nAccessibility: The Sullivan Hall is a wheelchair accessible space. Both bathrooms are all-gender and wheelchair accessible and are located outside of the space\, accessible via even terrain (concrete path). Both doors of the venue will be open for much of the day to ensure airflow; we will only close them if there are noise concerns. Tone List promotes “being how you are” at the show\, you can move around\, lie on the floor\, check out and go outside if you need fresh air or a break\, etc. There is parking available immediately outside the venue\, however it fills up quickly. The music will at times be loud. \nTone List acknowledges the sovereign Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the traditional and rightful custodians of where we work (Walyalup and Boorloo).

DESCRIPTION:Tom Avgenicos presents Ghosts Between Streams\, an ode to nature via a rich tapestry of sounds\, with Delay 45. \nGhosts Between Streams is an interdisciplinary work by 2022 Freedman Fellow\, composer and trumpeter Tom Avgenicos. It blends chamber music\, contemporary jazz and electronics to explore the power struggle between nature and urbanisation. With an overarching environmental concern\, the work captures the notion of solastalgia – the sadness felt at the loss or change of a beloved place in nature. \nInspired by Avgenicos’ daily walks through Stringybark Creek Reserve on Cammeraygal Country (Sydney)\, Ghosts Between Streamspaints a vivid picture of the reserve’s rich flora and fauna\, now threatened by urban development. This is reflected in the work through an exploration of contrasts: light and dark\, consonance and dissonance\, smooth and jagged\, acoustic and electronic. \nGhosts is performed by Avgenicos’ long-standing quartet\, Delay 45\, featuring Roshan Kumarage (piano)\, Dave Quinn (bass) and Ashley Stoneham (drums). Together they create a rich tapestry of sounds and textures that are woven together into an epic work that promises to take audiences on a spellbinding journey brimming with emotional power and resonance.

SUMMARY:Perth International Jazz Festival: Helen Svoboda (solo)
DESCRIPTION:A “whimsical and free” solo performance for double bass and voice. \nHelen Svoboda is a double bassist\, vocalist and composer. In the words of the ABC Music Show’s Andrew Ford\, she is “a musician who absolutely defies categorisation”. Her work explores the melodic potential of the contemporary double bass\, intricately weaving extended techniques and overtones with vocal tessitura to explore themes of sonic unity amidst abstract songwriting. Her performance practice emits a childlike\, quirky energy\, with a flair for “allowing difficult ideas to sound whimsical and free”\, according to vocalist Kristin Berardi. \nFor this performance\, she presents a series of new solo works for double bass and voice\, composed during her time in Finland as part of the Helsinki International Artist Programme earlier this year. Inspired by the arctic biosphere on Suomenlinna\, the materials feature extended overtone techniques and short songs akin to a stream of sonic consciousness.

SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: Kastoms performance with Taloi Havini\, Ben Hakalitz & Mario Celestino
DESCRIPTION:Kastoms is a new iteration of Taloi Havini’s Answer to the Call\, an immersive twenty-two speaker installation\, composed in dialogue with contemporary arts practice\, scientific investigation and customary wisdom. \nOriginally created after her residency onboard the R/V Falkor (Schmidt Ocean Institute) and premiered with the TBA21-Academy at Ocean Space\, Venice (2021)\, this significant work is now re-imagined in Australia for the first time\, resounding in a series of cycles specifically for the Old Customs House in Fremantle. \nAn island platform will lie at the centre\, its shape and blue tones will evoke the depth and expanse of our understanding of Oceania from the viewpoint of the artists homeland\, the island of Buka\, Bougainville. Listeners will be absorbed into a meditative and gradual evolving soundtrack\, designed by Hayley Forward. Hydrophone recordings of sea floor sonar mapping are layered with ocean chants and Indigenous instruments composed by musician’s Ben Hakalitz and Mario Celestino. Traversing beyond a scientific lens\, Kastoms utilises an ancient call and response method as an invitation for all to enter a temporal space created for deep-listening and relating. \nLike the ocean\, Kastoms is a work of sensory depth\, ancient dialogues and cultural contemporary resonance.
