DESCRIPTION:***  ZULI will be performing a very special live set on the night! *** \nAhmed El Ghazoly aka ZULI\, is a multi-instrumentalist\, producer\, and sound artist from Cairo\, Egypt. \nInternationally\, ZULI is best known for his releases on Lee Gamble’s UIQ – which included a string of EPs as well as his debut LP Terminal\, an album that highlighted the depth in his productions\, as he simultaneously combines experimentations in rap/hip-hop with music for listening as well as the dancefloor. The Italian Haunter Records also saw the release of the infamous Trigger Finger EP which went on to be remixed by the likes of TSVI\, AYA\, Acre and more.In 2019\, ZULI launched a video series ‘irsh’ together with Rama where they curated and invited artists to play video recorded sets in a social setting. Only having the chance to record two episodes before the pandemic struck\, they launched a label and released the first irsh compilation in September 2020 which highlighted talent from Cairo and the Middle East. The second compilation is currently in the works. \nLocally in Cairo\, ZULI is best known for his work in the Hip-hop scene\, particularly with rapper Abyusif (who appeared on ZULI’s 2018 album ‘Terminal’) but also in the Electronic music scene as part of the now defunct collective Kairo Ist Koming (KIK) between 2012-2015. It’s there he founded Cairo’s alternative music venue and club\, VENT\, together with Asem Tag aka ($$TAG$$)\, which existed between 2013-2015 before transforming their project into a namesake club night and festival. Around the same time\, VENT London was established at the now closed Dance Tunnel venue by a third partner\, Mohamed Elshourbagui. \nZULI’s music garners support all over the board ranging from the likes of Aphex Twin and Autechre\, to Ben UFO and Bradley Zero\, even Richie Hawtin through its wide ranging sound. Weaving vinyl\, lo-fi field recordings and Youtube video samples together the vibe is joyfully intimate and impeccably strange. \n  \nAt 7pm\, Avant-jazz quartet Group Therapy\, featuring Djuna Lee (bass)\, Jessica Carlton (trumpet)\, Simon Charles (saxophones) and Pete Evans (drums)\, will play a live set of driving and rhythmic improvised music.  \n  \nThere might be other silly antics\, maybe a brief speech or two. Festival curators Annika Moses & Josten Myburgh may share some strange items from their record collections later into the night. \n  \nPrinted programs will be there in abundance and maybe some other surprises. Astral Weeks’ wine list is really good — and be sure to take a punt on the in-house curated cocktails. \n  \nEntry is free\, but we encourage you to donate generously to the Audible Edge fundraiser. \nAudible Edge is a festival of exploratory music presented by Tone List. It’s geared towards exploring the marginal\, experimental\, and not-normal. It happens yearly in Boorloo and Walyalup\, on Whadjuk Noongar land. DESCRIPTION:‘an intervening space\, especially a very small one’ is a new body of work built upon a collaboration between visual artist Tessa Beale and composer Daniel Harrison in response to the Dwerda Weelardinup (Cantonment Hill) site. \nThe artists are interested in the transient nature of observed shifts in light\, shadow\, texture and movement and the potential for quiet moments encountered in nature when in unhurried time. Via sound and visual output\, Harrison and Beale go about extracting particular qualities\, properties and characteristics\, changing the scale at which things are observed and establishing new conditions for these observations. \nThe composition and interpretation of these environments is based on a tacit contemplation of the sounds and the microenvironment that it was sampled from. By identifying a shadow\, a movement\, a quality of light or a texture detected in the surrounding natural environment of this site we aimed to create an immersive experience for the viewer. \nVisual artist Tessa Beale and composer Daniel Harrison are excited to present their collection of new works at Current Gallery opening Wednesday 28th February (6-9pm). From his first musical genesis as a member of Kraftwerk and his work as Harmonia with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius\, Michael has etched out an entirely personal sound world\, most recently captured on a string of solo and collaborative albums. \nJoined by long time collaborators Hans Lampe (La Düsseldorf)\, Franz Bargmann (exCamera) and Vittoria Maccabruni\, this performance celebrates 50 years of NEU! and its groundbreaking legacy. It takes the now legendary NEU! canon and reworks it as a tribute to Klaus Dinger and in recognition of Michael Rother’s continued exploration of his utterly unique and profound way of music making. Curated by composer and improvising musician Josten Myburgh\, Kinds of Light celebrates ambitious experimentation\, careful musicianship\, and sounds that are relevant to this place and time. It is programmed across style and genre\, excited by the love and rigour that goes into music that defies categories. \nKinds of Light kicks off in 2024 with a co-curation with Boorloo-via-Montreal label Mystery & Wonder. E Millar will present a live instantiation of her artificial field recording project. Craig Pedersen\, joined by Michael Terren\, Djuna Lee\, Josten Myburgh & Sage Pbbbt\, will perform his composition “residues”. \nE Millar is a builder of intricate kinetic sound sculptures using recycled consumer-grade electronics and found objects. They have integrated video\, musical improvisation\, drag performance\, noise\, light\, wet materials\, spoken word and written word\, and embodiment practices. \nGuylaine Cosseron is an animalistic singer exploring a ‘total voice’ where all components of vocal sound are part of musical expression. Diemo Schwarz is based in Paris and an active contributor both to improvised music practice using computers\, and to emergent research on concatenative synthesis\, a technique where tiny particles of sound are re-assembled algorithmically into new sonic realities. Their duo folds exploratory voice and fragmented electro-acoustics in strange communions. DESCRIPTION:Tone List presents the release of Glass Heart\, a new album by Unfold\, the duo of Thea Rossen & Alice Humphries\, launching in the striking acoustic of the Swanbourne Church of the Resurrection and making use of the venue’s grand piano.\n\nhttps://weunfold.bandcamp.com/\n\nThe duo will be joined by a rare set by experimental post-ambient trio Pale Ribbons Tossed Into the Dark working the grand piano into their dense soundworld.\n\nhttps://prtd.bandcamp.com/\n\nOn ‘Glass Heart’ Unfold filter melodic fragments and improvisational moments\, looking to weave these materials into music that coalesces around singular points of focus. The duo explore space\, both temporally and acoustically\, and restraint\, finding ways to work with a limited set of materials and manage their sound making with great care over time. Throughout Glass Heart the listener is presented with the deep resonance of the bass drum\, which provides a bed for sparse moments of melody to flourish\, flowing from the prepared piano and open stringed scordatura electric guitar. Moments of sustain and near silence are punctuated with bold strikes of the bass drum that can be felt in the chest and highlight the scale in the work\, the small fragile sounds of glass\, marbles\, seeds and bells rendered as such in relation to the drum. True to their name\, Unfold work through attention and care to unravel\, unpack and unfold the vast aural phenomenon emergent from simple gestures and present a sonic landscape for the listeners’ patient investigation.\nFrom the artists:\n“Having previously worked together in a performer / composer relationship\, Unfold came about through a shared desire to work together in a more collaborative and spontaneous context\, where we both operate as performers/improvisers/composers and blur the lines between these roles.In the time leading up to making Unfold\, we were both stripped back by personal experiences of parenthood\, early postpartum\, loss and grief. Carving out this creative space with each other was a way for us to reconnect to our creative selves and the pure joy of making and playing with sounds that we find beautiful.We began these pieces as improvisations based on a single idea that each of us brought\, either a melody\, an object\, or a textural idea. Unfold is about clarity and simplicity. Stripping an idea back and letting something grow slowly.”\nDoors from 7:00pm\, with live music starting a little after.\nTickets are pay-what-you-can\, with a suggested price of $25 or $15 depending on your means. Free tickets are available for First Nations people\, companion card holders\, and those experiencing financial hardship.\nAccessibility: The venue is wheelchair accessible\, with accessible bathrooms.
