SUMMARY:TuneNoiseTune 9: Saskia Willinge & Sage Pbbbt + Harry Josland & Joshua Cusack
DESCRIPTION:A bi-monthly series for improvised music and avant-garde jazz\, TuneNoiseTune celebrates leading artists in exploratory music in Western Australia\, and new collaborations between jazz and experimental musicians. The series is co-curated by Perth Jazz Society and Tone List. \nNine concerts in\, we host two duo collaborations with long histories of working together across different projects.\nTrumpeter Harry Josland & composer\, bass player & electronic musician Joshua Cusack form a duo whose previous explorations have involved interpretations of Luigi Serafini’s Codex Seraphinianus\, and spontaneous\, acoustic improvisations. With Harry’s trumpet playing at the fore\, here Joshua puts aside the bass in order to explore integrating his recent forays into electronic music production\, extending on the hints of digital synthesis that crept their way into his PJS-funded recording project Playing Well With Others. \nhttps://joshuacusack.bandcamp.com/album/tales-from-the-codex \nCommitted young improviser Saskia Willinge plays a rare microtonal Kingma-system flute\, exploring a full-spectrum sound language by playing and singing into the instrument simultaneously. Sage Pbbbt’s deep investigation into virtuosic vocal improvisation\, throat singing and otherworldly sounds has made her one of Western Australia’s most beloved live acts in the local experimental music scene. Their duo makes a web of sounds which slip and slide between rich\, vocalised sonorities and strange\, uncanny whispers. \nBio \n\n \nIncidentally\, this duo collaboration comes after Saskia’s return from the Australian Art Orchestra Creative Music Intensive\, and a performance at the world-famous Make It Up Club. We’re excited to see what she’s learned. \n–\nPlease note that the ticket pricings are “pay-what-you-can”: each ticket offers the same access to the event\, with the money going to support future projects. The four5nine website offers three price options ($30/$20/$10); flexible pricing is available for walk-ins. Please contact us if you’d like to reserve a free ticket for reasons of financial hardship\, if you are a First Nations person\, or if you are a carer for a person with a disability who will be attending. \nAccessibility: The four5nine is not easily accessible by wheelchair. Wheelchair users can access the space via the entrance off 459 Fitzgerald St\, which has one short step. Assistance is required from staff to open the door\, which Tone List are happy to arrange; we or four5nine staff can also assist with the step. An all-gender wheelchair accessible bathroom is available in the courtyard of the Rosemount Hotel. Accessing this bathroom requires exiting the venue onto the street and looping around to the courtyard. There is a small amount of seating available. The music will at times be loud. Please feel free to contact us or The Rosemount Hotel with any questions. \n–\nTuneNoiseTune is a co-presentation of Tone List and the Perth Jazz Society\, and is proudly supported by the Western Australian Government through the Department of Local Government\, Sports and Cultural Industries\, and through the generosity of Carl Erbrich. Tone List and the Perth Jazz Society acknowledge the Whadjuk Noongar people as the custodians of the land on which we live and work and pay respects to Elders and custodians past\, present & emerging.

SUMMARY:Tone List Presents: Josten Myburgh & Daisy Sanders\, Kelsey Diamond & Soph Kruse\, Mute Care Unit
DESCRIPTION:Tone List presents is our new ad-hoc program of events responsive to proposals\, visiting artists\, and artist whims. The first of these is a program of experimental performances that play with stillness or quiet in brave ways. \nThe occasion here is a homecoming show for the duo of contemporary dancer Daisy Sanders and alto saxophonist Josten Myburgh. Having explored rest-as-performance through dance and music together for over five years\, the duo recently completed a tour of Aotearoa\, refining their practice to be more and more sensitive to the bristling intensity of silence and stillness. Marked by sudden changes in emotive state and intensity and a palpable trust\, its a powerful\, patient (and occasionally very playful) project. \nhttps://jostenmyburgh.com/\nhttps://daisysanders.com/ \nKelsey Diamond and Soph Kruse have been collaborating together as musicians\, interdisciplinary artists\, hosts of experimental dinner parties\, and considered event curators for many years. This new duo project explores a subtle\, droning ambient soundworld using modular synthesis\, found objects\, violin and other materials in striking and unusual assemblages. \nhttps://burntseedrecords.bandcamp.com/track/amygdala \nThe first live performance of Dylan Terranova’s project Mute Care Unit explores amplification of tiny acoustic sounds\, sparse twitches of analogue synthesis and electroacoustic feedback\, and silence. Known for stark and brutal electro-acoustic works and punishing harsh noise\, Mute Care Unit sends the extremity in the other direction towards the threshold of audibility. \nhttps://kilised.bandcamp.com/album/fragments \nDoors at 7:30pm\, with music starting shortly after (around 7:45pm). \nTone List events work on a pay-what-you-can principle: you are welcome to pay any amount. We usually suggest $25 or $15. \nThis gig is all ages. Non-alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase. \nAccessibility: The Maylands Yacht Club is a wheelchair accessible\, via a ramp at the exterior of the space\, and a wheelchair lift on the interior. An accessible all-gender bathroom is located in the hallway on the ground level. ACROD parking is available outside the space. The music will often be very quiet\, and may also have moments of sudden loud volume. \nTone List is a Boorloo-based exploratory music label\, operating on the lands of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation. We pay our respects to custodians and elders of this boodja past\, present and future. \nhttps://tonelist.com.au/

SUMMARY:The Journey Down
DESCRIPTION:The Journey Down is an animated and vibrant celebration of dance\, song\, projections and otherworldly sound coming together to transform an old bush wreck into a travelling canvas of story and culture. \nSix years in the making\, The Journey Down tour features the sonic sculpture Warnarral Noorrngoorrool (Gija for old car)\, on tour from Kununurra through the expanse of regional and remote WA to its final destination in Perth\, where it’s been acquired by WA Museum Boola Bardip. Warnarral Noorrngoorrool includes paintings depicting stories of dreaming\, vehicles and journeys by significant Gija artists including Shirley Purdie\, Gabriel Nodea and Gordon Barney. \nWarnarral Noorrngoorrool will be accompanied by powerful performances by Mirriwoong and Gija songmen and dancers including Chris Griffiths and Andrew Daylight\, Yamatji didjeridu virtuoso Mark Atkins with leading Australian musicians Aviva Endean\, Tristen Parr and Vanessa Tomlinson\, interwoven with animation and video design from Sohan Ariel Hayes (Boorna Waanginy: The Trees Speak). \nPresented in Perth for one night only\, The Journey Down will transport audiences to new worlds in a celebration of intercultural collaboration\, the vibrancy of our regional communities and the stories and sounds that connect us. \nAdditional Information\nWarnarral Ngoorngoorrool is pronounced Wah-nah-rool Noom-er-rool and is Gija for “old car” \nThe Gija people are from the East Kimberley area of Western Australia\, about 200 km south of Kununurra. Many Gija people now live around localities such as Halls Creek and Warmun. \nThe land of the Miriwoong people covers a large tract of country straddling the Western Australian and Northern Territory border and includes the township of Kununurra in the East Kimberley. \nAcknowledgements\nTura acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live\, learn and create. We pay our respects to Elders past and present. With solidarity and friendship we say thank you. \nThe Journey Down tour has been supported by the State Government of Western Australia through the Regional Arts and Cultural Investment Program\, and the Australian Government through the Australia Council\, its Arts Funding and Advisory Body. \n[Note from Owls] Accessibility details not provided.

SUMMARY:"Listen" with Jameson Feakes & Josten Myburgh\, Lia T & Rok Riley
DESCRIPTION:LISTEN \n6.30pm\, 15 September \nTaking its cue from the haunting lullaby of GOOD NIGHT\, this three-hour event presents local composers and producers to perform experimental musical responses to the work and the Perth city skyline it overlooks. \nListen line-up \n6.30pm Jameson Feakes & Josten Myburgh \n7.30pm Lia T \n8.30pm Rok Riley \nAbout the exhibition \nWorking across video\, sound\, performance\, and installation\, Özgür Kar’s cross-disciplinary practice is an exploration of contemporary existentialism with a particular focus on the interconnectivity of digital media and the body. \nKar’s installations feature black and white minimally animated characters trapped within television screens. Taking inspiration from Ottoman and Persian folklore\, experimental theatre\, early animation and 1990s MTV cartoons\, his works are devised as theatrical scenes with each character playing its part within a non-linear script. Often working with voice actors and instrumentalists\, Kar layers his source materials to create deceptively simple looping part soundscapes that become increasingly fraught and profound with repeated viewing. \nIn Good Night (2021) an almost eight-metre-long animated skeleton lies confined within the edges of television screens as they sing a haunting lullaby. This monumental yet cramped figure of Death gazes apathetically towards a murky city skyline. Their melancholic song expanding outwards beyond the visual confines of its digital coffin as the lullaby gently drifts\, drones\, and grows still\, reverberating its sorrowful tune into the listener’s body.

SUMMARY:Kinds of Light 7: Simon Charles & Lara Pollard
DESCRIPTION:Kinds of Light is a concert series for creative music at PS in Walyalup/Fremantle. Curated by composer and improvising musician Josten Myburgh\, Kinds of Light celebrates ambitious experimentation\, careful musicianship\, and sounds that are relevant to this place and time. It is programmed across style and genre\, excited by the love and rigour that goes into music that defies categories. \nSIMON CHARLES – new electro-acoustic compositions\nhttps://www.sibercha.com/ \nLARA POLLARD – solo for guitar and electronics\nhttps://larafay.bandcamp.com/ \nKinds of Light 7 sees York-based composer Simon Charles present new works emerging from his committed and enigmatic practice. Often using Nagra analogue tape machines and digital delays to process delicate field recordings\, alto and soprano saxophones\, harmonium and other instruments in his studio\, the soundworld of Simon’s work recalls multiple eras of experimental music simultaneously\, attentively revisiting lost avenues and recombining what’s found into something entirely new. Simon has performed internationally\, often as part of the award-winning experimental ensemble Phonetic Orchestra\, including in festivals and concerts in Oslo\, Porto\, Los Angeles\, Berlin\, Marseille and throughout Australia. He works regularly with visual artist Katie West\, poet Jessica Wilkinson\, and many musicians including Callum G’Froerer\, Jameson Feakes\, Djuna Lee\, Josten Myburgh\, Jim Denley and Rebecca Lane. \nYoung composer Lara Pollard is best known for their thoughtfully ramshackle indie folk project under the name Lara Fay\, writing gorgeous and atmospheric songs that convey effortless talent. In their solo electro-acoustic performances they combine looped guitar\, no-input mixer and effects processing\, bringing the effortlessness of their songwriting into delicately lush improvisations. Lara has worked in a variety of projects in town\, including writing new choral music for the Vanguard Consort\, and performing in bands Ocean Cosmonaut\, Vacuum Dreamer and Honour Culture. \nDoors and bar open from 7:30pm\, with live music starting a little after. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can\, with a suggested price of $25 or $15 depending on your means. Free tickets are available for First Nations people\, companion card holders\, and those experiencing financial hardship. \nAccessibility: The venue is wheelchair accessible\, with accessible bathrooms. There is ample seating available and the venue is very spacious. The music will at times be very quiet. \nKinds of Light is presented by Tone List and PS. Tone List and PS operate on the lands of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation. We pay our respects to custodians and elders of this boodja past\, present and future. \nhttp://tonelist.com.au/

SUMMARY:Red Room Poetry presents EXPERIMENTAL POETS OF PERTH
DESCRIPTION:Red Room Poetry presents EXPERIMENTAL POETS OF PERTH: an evening with cutting-edge artists from across Boorloo\, scrutinising the fringes of poetic expression.\nJoin us on Thursday 31st August at the Fremantle Navy Club as the poets delve into their practice\, integrating spoken word\, song\, instrumentalism\, & improvisation. Sonic worlds collide over culminating poetic histories.\n\nTickets $10/$15/$20 via https://events.humanitix.com/experimental-poets-of-perth\nJENNY HICKINBOTHAM\nDR CLAIRE FURCHICK PANNELL\nJOHN PANNELL\nBEC BOWMAN\nZOE BARRON\nFIONA HOOK\nLUKA BUCHANAN\nBEN BUCHANAN\n\n~~~~~~~~~\n\nJENNY HICKINBOTHAM\nAs writing\, performing and making arts are much more fun than listening to annoying voices\, Jenny spends her time creating. Jenny was awarded the RMIT Liquid Architecture Graduate Prize for Sound Art in 2020 and was supported by curator Joel Stern to put on an exhibition of her songs at Blindside Gallery as her prize.\nThis year Jenny returned to Emerging Writers Festival to perform with Miriam Webster in Distraction & its (dis)contents\, and with Arts Access’ CEO Caroline Bowditch in Into the Hybrid: a Dialogue of New Works.\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n\nDR CLAIRE PANNELL & JOHN PANNELL\nDr Claire Pannell\, aka Furchick\, is best known as an experimental musician\, but she has a long history of poetry and lyric writing going back to the 80s.\nClaire has released several poems with musical accompaniment on Dog Park Records. She writes about her personal life experiences and doesn’t hold back speaking her mind. She takes you on a personal journey through words.\nShe will be joined by her 92 year old father\, John Pannell. John became a self published writer at the age of 87 with a book of verse called The Whimsical Menagerie. At the Red Room\, he will be sharing his more adult work reflecting on his challenging life.\nClaire incorporates a DIY and punk attitude into her creations which fuse arts\, technology and science with Dog Park aiming to challenge the frontiers of sound and how music is made; from using household items and home made automata as musical instruments to recording live at home with musical collaborators.\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n\nBEC BOWMAN\nI spent my adolescence in the wilds of suburban Perth as a grunge. I brought myself up reading the adventures of people in other places\, and as soon as I could I was on a plane overseas. Since then I’ve been reading and travelling my way through my own adventures.\nI decided in 2015\, quite randomly\, that I wanted to be on radio. It took me another 18 months before I was in Perth at the same time the course was on. I loved every minute.\nWhen asked by Station interviewer what was the best thing about hosting Artbeat every Friday 9am -12 noon\, Bec said\, Feeling like part of something bigger than myself. Getting to discover new music through other presenters. Trawling through music in the middle of the night and excitedly sharing my finds.\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nZOE BARRON & FIONA HOOK\n\nTeacup Weather combines spoken word and strings to create an experience that is as unique as it is deeply moving. A cello resonates at roughly the same frequency as the spoken voice – that’s why it gets you in the guts. Zoe speaks in the key of G. Her stories tease out nuance from the mundane: sometimes playful\, sometimes dark\, they pick apart relatable experiences of suburbia\, love and domesticity\, and poke at social conventions we’ve learned to take for granted.\nFiona’s cello turns the whole thing visceral. She makes sounds you haven’t heard a cello make before – weird ones\, ugly ones\, some so beautiful they go right through you. Teacup Weather is funny and strange\, beautiful and reflective. You will hear yourself among the notes.\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n\nLUKA BUCHANAN & BEN BUCHANAN\nLuka Buchanan (they/them) is a visual artist\, poet\, & musician from Boorloo. Always informed by a passion for improvisation and DIY methods\, Luka’s artistic practice involves painting\, drawing\, collage\, performance\, and spoken word. Their work is speculative\, often emotional\, and investigates love\, trauma\, & gendered body-hood.\nLuka will be joined by their brother\, Ben Buchanan (he/him)\, who is a cellist and musician currently studying composition at WAAPA.\nTogether their performance explores poetic relationships in sound\, using cello & spoken word to convey complex emotional landscapes.\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nFremantle Navy Club is located at 64 High St\, Fremantle (Corner Packenham St).\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nExperimental Poets of Perth is hosted at Walyalup\, on Whadjuk Noongar boojar. Sovereignty was never ceded.

SUMMARY:ALT//NOIZE presents UBOA [Naarm/Melbourne] + TERRITORY + FLESH PRISON + PUKE + DOXX EPHEMERA
DESCRIPTION:Uboa is the solo drone/noise project of Xandra Metcalfe\, Naarm/Melbourne-based sound artist specialising in both dreamy ambience and nightmarish caverns of harsh noise. A testament to Uboa’s intense live shows\, she will be touring the East Coast this year with Liturgy (US) having recently shared the stage with DIS FIG (Berlin)\, previously opening for Gabber Modus Operandi (ID) and Trepaneringsritualen (SW). \nDrawing lyrical inspiration from her experience as a transgender woman\, Xandra Metcalfe’s work as Uboa condenses a wider range of influences into a frightening soundscape of its own. Fans of Purgist\, Facialmess\, Endon\, Locrian\, Nurse With Wound\, along with artists on the No Rent and Triangle Records labels will find themselves right at home with her soundscapes. \nHer most recent album\, The Origin of My Depression is critically acclaimed\, and led to Uboa being signed to The Flenser (dark experimental record label based in San Francisco). Also\, you may know her from her ambient-noise-black-doom split release with Bolt Gun back in 2018. \nAlso featuring noise\, grind\, hyperpop and emo from Territory\, Flesh Prison\, Puke and Doxx Ephemera. \n[A note from Owls: Accessibility info for Badlands Bar unknown – sorry. SUMMARY:Weekends at PICA: Sancintya Mohini Simpson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Weekends at PICA\, a morning filled with coffee\, performance and conversation with PICA’s Djilba/Kambarang artist Sancintya Mohini Simpson. \nSimpson will present An exhalation: communicating with my ancestors through DNA and an ocean re-remembered. This experimental sound performance incorporates stainless steel vessels\, water\, salt\, the body and breath\, creating space to connect with ancestors by reimagining and recreating an ocean space. \nFollowing the performance\, Simpson will join artist Shivanjani Lal\, a fellow member of the Indian indentured labourer diaspora\, to discuss her practice and exhibition ām / ammā / mā maram. The rich\, sensory exhibition features objects and paintings that reveal the often-absent narratives of Indian indentured labourers in colonial history.
