SUMMARY:Audible Edge '25: Program Launch with Dan O'Connor & James Bradbury\, Salty
DESCRIPTION:James Bradbury (modular synthesizer) & Dan O’Connor (trumpet) \nSalty (DJ) \n  \nAudible Edge\, Tone List’s annual international festival of exploratory music\, is back in April 2025. Be the first to see the full line up at our launch party\, hosted in the cosy glow of Astral Weeks bar on February 26. Audible Edge co-curators Annika Moses & Josten Myburgh will help you wander into the strange and silly swamp that is the 2025 program\, aided by some bonkers local sets. \n  \nFounding member of Tone List Dan O’Connor joins forces with recent Berlin returnee James Bradbury\, reunited in their first duo collaboration since 2017’s “Biomimicry” album (TL05). James’ time away has seen him building tools for algorithmic sampling\, designing step sequencers for Rian Treanor and Mark Fell\, and working under the hood of Ableton. For his first performance back in Boorloo\, we’ll get to hear him improvising on synthesizer. Dan joins this with his honed approach to the trumpet\, building incredible atmospheres from microscopic sounds. \n  \nLocal DJ Salty (of Volim fame) facilitates a decidedly atmosphere before and after the live set with choice sounds. \n  \nEntry is free\, but space is tight\, so be sure to register. It’s also a great time to pitch in to support five ambitious projects for this year’s festival through the Audible Edge Seed Fund. (insert hyperlink) \nAccessibility\nAstral Weeks is wheelchair accessible at street level\, and has a gender-neutral accessible bathroom. It is a small\, acoustically treated space. It’s a small bar which serves alcohol. It is likely to feel crowded on the night. The music will have a wide dynamic range\, including loud and stimulating sections and moments of extreme quiet. The room is indoors and air-conditioned and windows are kept closed\, meaning ventilation is limited. Lighting will be low and warm. There will not be a dedicated check-out or quiet space in the venue due to limited space. Free earplugs and N95 masks are available.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge Night School: Organise
DESCRIPTION:In a climate of rising censorship\, board overreach\, anti-Palestinian and Islamophobic racism\, and in a general climate of suspicion towards art\, what alternative spaces are required to maintain the cultures we want to participate in? It aims to gently offer an inspiring sense of sovereignty\, a chance to eat together and think about the role of cultural spaces in creating contexts for sharing truth and practicing freedom. \nFt: \n(6:30pm) Yoe & Gabby Loo: The teashop from Burma\, a community cultural space \n(7:30pm) Feras Shaheen: Dance Dance Intifada \nThis session is co-presented with STRUT Dance and The Blue Room Theatre.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge Night School: Gym
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Audible Edge Night School workshop series. \nRioting against ways of teaching art and music which put brain over body\, we invite you to partake in a day of collective embodied play for makers of all kinds. This features workshops from three local practitioners sharing how their body remains a grounded point of connection to their practice\, and their well-being as artists. While ‘gym’ can be a scary word (and place) for many of us\, we’re hoping to build our own positive associations with the word\, creating a space to tune into our bodies without the internal and external criticism that’s all too often the dominant voice in these spaces. \nFeatures three sessions: \n5:30pm with Dan O’Connor \n6:30pm with Annika Moses \n7:30pm with Moopa \nCo-presented with The Blue Room Theatre and STRUT Dance.

SUMMARY:O\,D\,E\, a new experimental chamber opera - audition workshop
DESCRIPTION:Call for singers for a new experimental opera\nO\,D\,E is a new and experimental chamber opera written by Sage J Harlow (aka Sage Pbbbt) and produced by Tone List. It’s a queer\, occult retelling of Orpheus & Eurydice\, grounded in the suffering that comes with simply being alive. Exploring gender and identity\, characters change bodies\, die and reincarnate\, and begin and end contracts with eternity\, singing\, screaming and howling through the libretto as they do so. \nWe are seeking three singers to fill lead roles in the opera. \nThe project runs between July and September\, and features a creative development stage (July 7 – 19)\, rehearsal period (July 21 – August 18)\, and finally a season of 10 shows (August 21 – September 6). All artists involved will receive a fee of at least $3355.30 AUD for the development\, with additional funding pending for the season. \nThe audition workshop will be held with Sage Harlow & Dr Jeremy Neideck (course coordinator of the Bachelor of Performing Arts at WAAPA) on March 22\, 5:30pm – 8:00pm in The Blue Room Theatre’s Kaos Room.. This is a fun\, participatory skill-sharing session: a chance to learn from two of the lead artists on the project\, whilst also having a go at singing through some of the libretto\, in order to be considered for one of the roles. There’ll be some snacks and a chance to meet other folks interested in extended singing in Boorloo. \nRead the full audition information pack with information about how to apply. \nThis project is supported by the Western Australian state government through the Department of Local Government\, Sports and Cultural Industries\, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts\, and Tone List.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge Night School: Gym
DESCRIPTION:We are not literally going to the bank\, but we are accessing the collective brains-trust about relating to money; having it\, wanting it\, talking about it. As an artist-run initiative\, a not-for-profit organisation\, a charity\, and a constellation of individual practicing artists\, Tone List and the Audible Edge festival have inhabited all kinds of awkward positions straddling government-funded to volunteer-run. We have a staunch commitment to the rights of musicians as workers\, but also to the power of the no-money networks of creative exchange. This sassy double bill hopes to bring artists together to talk about money and the agency we have in choosing how we relate to it. Within an arena that often leaves us feeling disempowered\, uncomfortable\, unseen\, and in competition with each other\, can we spark a discussion that inspires connection\, problem-solving\, team work and solidarity? \nTwo sessions: \n(6:30pm) Patrick McLaughlin & Allison Archer: DLGSCI grantwriting information session \n(7:30pm) Bridget Chappell: Defund the arts? \nThis session is co-presented with STRUT Dance and The Blue Room Theatre.

SUMMARY:Sonic Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of personal embodiment through sonic immersion. An intimate experience of the resonant interplay of gongs\, bowls and modular synthesis. \nThe journey begins with a guided meditation to support your nervous system to move into a state of peace and tranquility\, opening the channels to receive the resonant sound waves. \nAllow your whole body to experience the divine essence of sound carefully designed to elicit meditative states of consciousness. A carefully crafted composition created by sound artists Lesley Kaye and Stewart Shepherd. \nLesley has been facilitating sound meditations in the local community for the past 7 years and is currently completing a Phd designing compositions to evoke meditative states of consciousness through sound. Stew is an artist who specialises in creating resonant fields that are supportive of whole body rest through specific frequencies that align to the Earth and Sun gongs. Together they own Burnt Seed Records and host a number of events in the Boorloo region. They are passionate about offering experiences that provide environments supportive of wellbeing and healing. \nBring a yoga mat and any cushions you require to be comfortable. You may also like to bring an eye mask to reduce the level of ambient light. Upon request\, we can also provide a folding chair for your comfort. \nThis event is pay by donation with all proceeds going to Perth Homeless Support Group https://perthhomeless.com.au/.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge '25: Plentiful Supply
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Audible Edge Festival of Exploratory Music. (https://ae.tonelist.com.au/) \nThe smallest\, most perplexing and most flavourful event of Audible Edge\, Plentiful Supply is a hybrid dinner party\, sound installation and performance. Weaved from the found object improvisation\, ceramic vessel-making\, intuitive worldbuilding and flavour alchemy of Kelsey D\, and the modular synthesis and sound design of Soph Kruse\, this is a kind of multisensory banquet. It’s also a great thing to go to if you want to see Audible Edge but don’t know anyone: connections across the banquet table are a given. \nThis event is very limited capacity: we recommend you book right away. \nAccess \n\nPlentiful Supply is diverse-diet friendly: entirely vegetarian with vegan options\, and most items in the banquet free of gluten. Please let us know if you have any particular allergies or dietary preferences with your booking: these can be accommodated. \nEntrance to the event is by a side roller door with ramp access. The venue has two gender-neutral bathrooms which are not wheelchair accessible; we’re currently researching a wheelchair-accessible bathroom that can be made available in an adjacent venue and will update this space. The venue is very small and will likely feel crowded on the night. The music will generally be quiet\, humming and ongoing. Doors and windows can be left open for ventilation. There is no dedicated check-out space for this event. \nThe Audible Edge Festival has a dedicated accessibility budget. Please be in touch if you’d like to use this to help experience this event fully. \n\n

SUMMARY:Audible Edge Festival of Exploratory Music '25
DESCRIPTION:Boorloo’s annual “experimental music bender” may now be entered into your calendars: Audible Edge ’25 will take place from April 3 – 6. \nAE is a celebration of DIY and exploratory music culture on Whadjuk Noongar boodja. It has no genre affiliation and is home to all kinds of sonic strangeness. It has a boundless affection for the unhinged\, the goofy and the peerlessly rigorous alike. It is about special music in settings that strive to be fun\, friendly\, safe\, and accessible. \nIf 2024’s festival was something that shimmered and shined\, AE’25 is the same but dropped in the mud. There is a flute under water\, a women’s wartime song\, a tiny rattling machine\, the crackle of burning tree-stumps\, a vulture’s wings cutting the air\, a binaural recording of high-heels sinking into wet grass. Sometimes listened to from something soft and comfy\, and other times in a much sillier context. \nAE is about learning about where we are through those who have courageously dreamed of how this time and place could sound. It’s about learning how great our scene is by putting it on even-footing with international heavy hitters. And it’s about being on the side of artists\, finding ways to support exploratory expression here. \nIf you’ve come before\, we hope you’ll be excited as us to block out the dates on your calendar. If you haven’t been before\, we’d love to welcome you into this cool thing\, and suggest you do the same. It’s all really good\, and flows in a way that takes care of you. \nStay tuned for the announcement of our program launch party in February 2025. \n\n\n“Am I still on planet earth or did we actually crash land on bizarro world?”\nRainy Colbert\, Magazine6000\, 2024 \n\n“this festival rocks”\, “world-class”\, “too good to be true”\npunters\, 2024 \n\n“Audible Edge is definitely now a must-see event on the Perth music calendar.”\n★★★★★\, Jonathan Marshall\, Limelight Magazine\, 2022 \n\n“Every aspect…seemed so meticulously crafted and flawlessly executed”\nTiffany Ha\, SeeSaw\, 2021 \n\n\n“Local label Tone List is now the go-to organisation for Perth experimental music…Audible Edge 2021 was a triumph.” \nJonathan Marshall\, SeeSaw\, 2021 \nAccessibility\n\nTone List are in a slow process of building concepts of accessibility and cultural safety into the foundations of how we operate. We work with peer artists Patrick Gunasekera and Zali Morgan towards these aims. \nSome of the things we do include: clear communication about ventilation\, sound volume and density\, crowdedness\, lighting\, wheelchair access and terrain for each show. We don’t use strobe lights. We provide free earplugs and masks. We host shows with snacks and healthy food\, and alcohol-free shows. We have shows that are kid-friendly\, all-ages\, and shows at times that are easier for parents to attend. We have party aunties on staff at busy shows. We put up content warnings. \nCloser to the date\, we open a portal for requesting specific access provisions at events (such as interpreters\, or a wheelchair taxi between gigs). We have a budget for this. Feel free to get in touch with us if you’d like information about this in advance. \nAcknowledgments\n\nAudible Edge takes place on Whadjuk Noongar boodja: sovereign Country for eternity. We pay respects to Noongar birdiya (Elders) and custodians. We dream of a culture of sounding and listening which supports restorative justice and the Law of the land. \nAudible Edge is presented by Tone List. It is funded by the Western Australian government through the Department of Local Government\, Sports and Cultural Industries\, the City of Melville\, and the City of Perth. \nOur international partners are the Goethe Institut\, the Audio Foundation\, Ater Fondazione\, and the Swedish Arts Grants Committee Konstnärsnamnden. \nTone List’s partners for the 2025 program include Goolugatup Heathcote\, WA Museum Boola Bardip\, Wireless Hill Museum\, STRUT Dance\, The Blue Room Theatre\, Astral Weeks\, Sound Exploration Fremantle\, Teeter Bakery\, PS\, and The Rechabite. \nTone List is sponsored by Pound Coffee and Local & Aesthetic.
