A producer and DJ lauded by Boomkat as “one of the underground’s key\, if liminal\, hyper-connectors\,” he runs the label and event series FELT\, which has released records by the likes of Civilistjävel! & Carrier. \nPreviously known as Perko\, Jones released his acclaimed debut album Ephemera on Numbers in 2024. Developed with collaborative energy as the creative priority\, the album was produced by Jones alongside an extensive list of like-minded musicians\, lyricists and vocalists\, including Huerco S\, James K\, Koreless\, Birthmark\, ELDON and Withdrawn of Bristol’s Cold Light crew\, Laila Sakini and Lia T. DESCRIPTION:Sophia performs live at Rosemount Hotel on Friday February 20\, joined by supports Ben Buchanan and Nika Mo. This rare\, intimate seated performance offers a close-up experience of her music and is not to be missed.\nSophia Hansen-Knarhoi is a detail focused experimental ambient-folk songwriter\, combining expansive evocative sound worlds with intimate storytelling. \nWith her first album Undertow\, London-based composer/singer-songwriter Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi reveals stark vulnerability nestled in a dark ambience that is both intimate and expansive. Voice and cello provide the bedrock of a detail focused record\, that threads together memory\, grief\, growth and connection. Undertow took its shape during an acclimation of sensuality and self\, through a period of processing trauma\, and all of life\, love and loss that it surrounds and intertwines with. ‘Undertow’ binds this intimacy with the corporeal\, spanning violation and deep trust. It deals with the fallout of the victims of violence against women\, voyaging through fear and pain to absolution. \n“The cello is widely considered the closest instrument to the voice. This is something that continually bleeds into my practice\, finding the connection between voice\, cello and body. The physicalization of this combined practice creates a sense of corporeality in my sound. I let it be intuitive\, my playing and singing guided by my breath and the way my body moves. I found the duality of this expression informed reflections of sensuality and intimacy throughout the album.” \nUndertow coalesces in a unique combination of clarity in its folk/singer-songwriter storytelling with a wholly alive and reactive bed of instrumentation. Instead of traditional structures and overly virtuosic solos\, all aspects of production and performance lean heavily into spontaneity and gut feeling\, reaching closer to a sense of unfiltered emotional truth. The result is an act of reification: songs with a sense of touch\, of ears and eyes and flesh\, coming to life around the mouth. \nWith the skilled Brooklyn producer Randall Dunn as a collaborator\, Undertow pushes further into the abstract\, a dark and dissociative space. Dunn carves intricate space with vast void-like atmospheres and cinematic intensity\, with an unrelenting foregrounding of vulnerability. With instrumentalists Peter Zummo\, Marilu Donovan\, Henry Fraser\, Luke Bergman and Brent Arnold\, the arrangements on Undertow draw breath into a minimalistic sonic landscape\, occupying a cohesive improvisational latitude. \nBorn in Perth\, Hansen-Knarhoi grew up surrounded by the natural world. ‘Undertow’ draws on the stark landscapes and vast waters of Western Australia. At moments\, field recordings are woven into the work\, while at others\, arrangements reflect its beautiful barren environment through memory. “Engulfing myself in nature has always been a way for me to process the world\, to bring me back into my body and my senses”. ‘Undertow’ revels in this remote sonic landscape\, submerging stories in the depths of truth.

The program traces a line from conceptual composition to scorched-earth noise praxis to the outer edges of contemporary rap.\n\n\nFrom Yogyakarta arrives Aditya Pandu Wijaya\, a key figure in Indonesia’s noise vanguard and the force behind Bergegas Mati\, his harsh-noise vehicle known for its eroding\, heat-warped extremity. Pandu’s networked practice spans global collaborations\, split releases\, raw-collage digital art and his cassette-driven imprint Gerpfast Records\, which has quietly become a clearing house for scenes that refuse to align – shoegaze\, hardcore\, metal\, electronica and the vast detritus between. His new project\, D.O.V.E.\, pushes further into violent oscillatory abrasion\, reaffirming noise as both rupture and communion. \nCutting through these intensities is Pette Shabu\, the Quezon City rapper shaping a distinctly Southeast Asian reading of experimental hip-hop. Her work fuses boom-bap\, metal\, ballroom\, industrial and rave architectures into a kind of incendiary vernacular theatre – language as protest\, pulse and provocation. On her recent debut SPRAK\, she fractures genre into a riotous\, multilingual cipher: political\, playful\, deeply embodied. Live\, Pette operates at a threshold where club energy collides with underground poetics\, a charged presence carving out new trajectories for regional rap. \nFailing Upwards\, the ongoing alias of Chris Cobilis\, works in the long shadow of late-20th-century conceptualism\, folding film scoring\, installation and procedural performance into a practice that treats sound as both material and thought experiment. From self-duplicated record-shop replicas to the multi-device micro-drama of INSTAPHONICS\, Chris navigates the frayed interfaces between technology\, perception and non-music with a misanthropic humour that feels increasingly diagnostic. \nBen Aguero selects some recorded music on the night\, playing selections before and between performances. \nTogether\, these artists outline a terrain where form blurs\, pressure builds and sound becomes a vector for instability\, resistance and raw proposition. \nPart of Summit at Lawson Flats – an unmissable series for the curious and thoughtful. He has previously worked as a science communicator and journalist. Ryan is also a musician\, playing in local bands and his own project Brushtail over the last decade\, and runs the record label Rockton Records where he organises and promotes artists and events.

Drawing from their lauded album Rough Magic alongside a kaleidoscope of works from their expansive catalogue\, this high-powered and poignant octet dissolves boundaries between ancient music and cutting-edge experimentation. \nFounded in 2009 by Brad Wells\, Roomful of Teeth were incubated at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA)\, where members studied with some of the world’s most extraordinary singers and teachers. Through experimentation\, exploration and plenty of failures\, the group learned that the boundaries of the human voice are never what they seem\, that rules can be bent\, even broken – and perhaps they should be. \nThrough their unique collaborative process\, Roomful of Teeth have worked with many of today’s most compelling musical creators to build a significant and continuously growing repertoire. DESCRIPTION:31.1.26–> for the first cab home for the year we’re cruising into a puritanically LIVE event that skirts the edges of music you know\, love and have never heard before. \nOver at CC HQ we are still pinching ourselves that the kernel of the eve should be Artificial (a.k.a Nicole Skeltys)\, an artist who has released across the temporal and aural spectrum. We’ve experienced her projects as feeling out liminal sounds; serenely staunch IDM\, acidic boppers and tinkling jingles to have you twirling into the early morning. You may have crossed paths with her music under the guise of B(if)tek (with Kate Crawford)\, an essential staple of nineties & noughties Aus. It’s true that tweeny Circuit Central was raised on nothing but a Saturday morning bowl of cornflakes and an endless loop of Biffers on Rage. \nThere’s too much to say about the special musicians who will be sewing the sonic quilt before Artificial. Lia T & Lyndon Blue will teach us new things about the viola\, a presumed dubbed out exploration of Basic Mind with Clouds Come Rain\, the syrupy hip shakers of Blood Knows\, and a moment pouring one out for our favourite kind of surface with Dedicated Floor. \nAs always\, loving you all too much for gassing up these events- we’re taking a temporary pause from parties after this one so would love to give you all a big squeeze on the 31st @ PS.

He is a self-taught musician and an exceptional improviser on the no-input mixer (a mixing desk transformed into an instrument using feedback). Jean-Philippe’s music is marked by its compositional precision\, decisiveness\, and attention to the grain and texture of lengthy sustained drones. Jean-Philippe sustains collaborations with forward-thinking musicians globally including Clare Cooper\, Jean-Luc Guionnet\, and the orchestra ONCEIM. Contemplative\, risky\, frisson-inducing stuff. \nRich Wh is a local electronic musician working with a refined sound palette on modular synthesisers. In his music\, chaotically interacting drones\, pulses and crackles are sounded with a sense of veiled darkness. He plays solo using different combinations of drums\, percussion\, amplification and electronics\, and leads the contemporary hybrid percussion / gamelan group ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH. In the new millennium\, his work took a long detour away from the drum kit through junk electronics\, extreme amplification and electro-acoustic techniques\, documented on a series of solo and collaborative recordings from these years. \nAlongside continuing his electro-acoustic work\, in the last decade\, Guthrie has returned to the drums with a vengeance\, developing a series of solo works marked by a radical single-mindedness\, from relentless rhythmic workouts to earth-quaking explorations of the bass frequencies of gongs and other metal percussion instruments. In the crowded world of free jazz/improv percussion\, Guthrie’s work is distinguished from the delicately pointillist approach of much European improvisation by its rhythmic sophistication\, unashamed virtuosity and undeniable physicality\, touching on aspects of world musics from Javanese gamelan to South Indian Carnatic music. \nAs a dedicated grassroots and DIY concert organiser\, while still a student in Melbourne Guthrie (alongside Ren Walters) established the weekly concert series ‘Improvised Tuesdays’\, now known as the Make It Up Club\, Australia’s longest running performance series for improvised and experimental music. A 2 hr workshop will be facilitated by the very special AliceC and Annika Moses\, artists who bring their brilliant knowledge and passion for improvisation\, embodiment\, movement and sound. Following this is a 1-hr long open improvisational performance for workshop participants\, with an audience. Everyone is welcome to join the workshop (RSVP below!) and the performance is for public viewing! \nAliceC says \n‘Through my love and commitment to improvisation\, I am interested in cultivating practices that shift\, transform and elucidate states of moving and being.’ \nAlice is an interdisciplinary artist\, working in dance\, film\, performance and installation\, with a 40 year history of contemporary performance making. She is a provocative and versatile performer whose enduring aesthetic enquiry into the moving body creates work that interrogates and disrupts social and cultural narratives. The materiality of her work emerges from an attention to inner and outer worlds\, inviting an intimacy with the body and place\, wrestling an entwinement of personal/artistic\, colonial and planetary histories. Alice has been an educator and mentor to a generation of Australian artists\, influencing diverse disciplines of dance\, theatre\, writing\, sound\, visual art\, sculpture and film making. Since returning to Boorloo/Perth in 2022 she has been actively engaged with STRUT Dance teaching and mentoring young and mid-career artists. Her most recent work terra first realised as performance\, Holmes à Court Gallery\, Perth (2024) and further film iterations by Cobie Orger with global distribution as a 3-channel 4K video installation and single channel HD video. \nAnnika says \n‘Every musician has a body\, though Western music has spent centuries trying to obscure this fact\, and every movement artist makes sound. Two high-contrast duos exploring thoughtful blends of electro-acoustic sound\, one dynamic & noisy\, the other evasive & subtle. \nAviva Endean & Josten Myburgh have recently been experimenting with a duo language that combines softly humming layers of electronics generated by sustain pedals\, under their acoustic clarinet & saxophone. Playing at whisper-quiet volumes and gliding in and out of silence\, the electronic tones are like a mirage behind the acoustic layer: all the sounds weaved together\, almost indistinguishable. This is their first live performance of this project after recording it on Dja Dja Wurrung Country earlier this year. \nMaking Out (Rosa Bassett) and Izzy French meet for the first time in a first-meeting performance. With a shared investment in noise\, electro-acoustic improvisation and experimental rock music\, both artists employ games\, restrictions and challenges to discover new possibilities in improvisation and composition\, and are active organisers in their respective scenes. They work with aesthetics that can at times be bracing & brutal and at others dynamic\, intense and unusual. SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: Whalefall
DESCRIPTION:Artists Ben Frost and Tom Mùller collaborate on Whalefall\, a new temporary work conceived in response to the landmark Port Beach Shed — a skeletal\, stand-alone structure that stands sentinel at the intersection of Tydeman and Port Beach Roads\, gazing out over the vast Indian Ocean. \nThe work pays homage to a rare and solemn event: the appearance of a lone sperm whale\, the largest of the toothed whales\, which came dangerously close to Port Beach before becoming stranded on a sandbar near Rockingham. Despite efforts to assist\, the whale died\, leaving behind a haunting presence. \nWhalefall transforms the existing edifice into a sanctuary of sound and light — a spectral memorial to this marine giant. The structure becomes an illuminated carcass\, pulsing with sonic echoes that reference the whale’s extraordinary acoustic world. Sperm whales communicate and echolocate through powerful clicks\, trumpets\, and codas\, with vocalisations reaching up to 230 decibels — the loudest of any animal on Earth. \nIn this work\, Frost and Mùller evoke the ghostly resonance of these underwater signals\, reimagining the shed as both a beacon and a requiem — a place where land meets sea\, memory meets myth\, and silence is filled with the language of giants.

DESCRIPTION:The return of our long-dormant DIY performance residency series is made possible in partnership with new studio space and gallery _____g.s. \nThis performance residency series is about offering a musician an opportunity to “sharpen the sword” and test experimental ideas through back-to-back nightly concerts. This is a rarity in Boorloo\, where experimental gigs are still relatively infrequent. But it’s essential to some experimental music practices\, which thrive on the energy brought by an audience. \nWe’re pleased to host Raras Sukardi for our first redux of this series. In recent years Raras has been determinedly researching freeform musics throughout Asia by travelling and collaborating. She usually works with suling\, clarinet\, tubes\, noise & feedback. Her Indonesian heritage shapes her identity\, creating a deep sense of belonging and natural connection towards Indonesian culture\, people\, and land. This connection inspires her artistic journey\, driving her to explore the interrelationship between art\, nature\, and spiritual energy. Currently engaged in clarinet teaching\, Raras continually seeks to learn new techniques and broaden her community to deepen her artistic practice. \nAccessibility: \nThe performances are held in a very small space which will likely feel crowded. Hypnotic downtuned super fuzzed out bass and pummeling drum machine emerge through layers upon layers of droning feedbacking guitars as a space echo drowned vocal relays the bleakness of complete and utter hopelessness.\nThe songs navigate themes of abandonment\, body dysmorphia\, gender dysphoria\, suicidal ideation and homicidal fantasies\, the lyrics derived from neurodivergent and PTSD melt downs. This intimate space invites you to sweat\, float and dissolve into a curated sonic journey. \nAcross a series of 60-minute sessions\, sound artists\, musicians\, poets\, and cultural leaders create immersive soundscapes designed to deepen connection to place. Inspired by the Fremantle Biennale’s 2025 theme of sanctuary\, each session is an exploration in active listening\, collective care and embodied transformation. Sound changes with the time of day: morning meditations and vocal landscapes drift toward late-night DJ sets and experimental bass vibrations. Your body becomes a conduit for deep frequency — buoyant\, dissolving\, alive. \nWhether you’re drawn by tradition\, curiosity or the lure of sound and heat\, Sound Sauna offers a space to reflect\, to soften and to feel\, floating between breath and rhythm. Come alone or with others. Sit\, listen\, sweat. Let the ocean hum at your back. The warmth will carry you and the sound will stay with you. \n  \n\n\nStuart Orchard is a West Australian composer-performer\, sound designer and educator. His work with ambient piano soundscapes\, aeolian music\, self-made string instruments and adventurous rock music have seen him perform around the world\, including at SoundOut Festival (Canberra)\, Tanzforum (Berlin)\, and the Walyalup Weekend of Improvised Music (Perth). His music has been used in the ABC TV production The Heights (2019); he has also been commissioned by Tone List (Audible Edge Festival\, 2020) and by Joseph Simons’ for his solo choreographic work First Thing’s First\, which toured in over 40 venues worldwide. He has worked\, recorded and played with influential musicians across genres\, including Mark Reeder\, Jean Luc Guionnet\, Jim Denley & Jodie Rottle. He is active playing in an array of bands and improvised collaborations across Perth. \nStuart is interested in immersive listening\, and the connection of musicians and listeners to their environment through its natural forces & stories. He has a Bachelor of Music (First Class Honours) in music composition\, where he focused on interactive aeolian instruments & sculptures. He has undertaken further intensive studies with Billy Martin (The New School\, NYC) and Jim Denley (via Tone List)\, and also holds qualifications in writing & secondary education. \nLIVE SET – Stuart will use his aeolian (wind-powered) instruments to create an improvised piece shaped by the environmental forces at Manjaree.
