DESCRIPTION:The curators of Audible Edge\, Annika Moses & Josten Myburgh\, invite you for a reflective discussion on the festival. Why was Audible Edge the way it was? What challenges were faced in pulling it together? How did it actually go? What was good about it? What didn’t work? \nThis debrief serves an important function for Tone List to reflect on how public money is put to use in service of our program. This is both ethical\, and mandatory for our funding evaluations. But it’s also a way of inviting the public to join in that process and shape the festival into the future. It’s a space for you to support the festival with your perspective and ideas\, and also to critique or challenge its curatorial perspectives. \n\nAccessibility\n\nThe State Library of Western Australia Geographe Room is a wheelchair accessible venue. It is located on the ground floor. There are numerous wheelchair accessible\, all-gender bathrooms located throughout the library. The event is alcohol-free and all-ages. The room will be brightly and clearly lit. Live captioning can be arranged for the session. The venue is enclosed with no windows. It will not be overcrowded\, but depending on in-person attendance numbers\, it may not have spare for more than 1.5m physical distancing.

DESCRIPTION:The last hurrah of Audible Edge! \nI make big noise … is a relaxed late arvo concert celebrating the close of the festival. Expansive sound collage\, poetic reflections\, and nuanced folk provide a soft final landing place for those at the end of a big festival weekend; or a perfect Sunday outing for homebodies! This all-ages\, families-welcome gig is set up with catering by Teeter and Manna\, interactive activities\, outdoor space and room to stretch out\, and no alcohol (but cups of tea and yummy drinks by Strangelove). \nThis concert is also an album launch for Tone List’s 40th release by Jenny Hickinbotham. Jenny’s songs and poetry are cheeky and singular. They are joyous creative outbursts that often reflect her day-to-day life\, idiosyncratic worldly observations\, and her lived experience of hearing voices. Jenny will perform live in collaboration with local enigmas Chris Cobilis and Lana Rothnie. As a never-before-heard trio they are bound to cause a ruckus in the best way. \nComposer Simon Charles and John Kinsella\, one of this continent’s foremost poets\, debut a new collaboration. Using field recordings\, analogue tape\, musical notation and poetry\, Simon and John have made tender traces of the suspension bridge in York\, on Ballardong boodja. Their work attends to the bridge and how it relates to its surroundings\, unravelling multiple meanings and connections. The piece will be performed by the two artists accompanied by long-time collaborators Jameson Feakes\, Rebecca Lane & Jon Heilbron. \nAt the top of the show is the debut of tenforward\, the duo of Lyndon Blue (Heathcote Blue\, Leafy Suburbs) and Jessyca Hutchens (Jane Harris). Both wordsmiths\, folk stars and gentle weirdos in their own right\, their two unique sensibilities combine to make tender-hearted ditties. \nGood vibes supplied in-between sets by DJ Ayo Busari\, who plays tunes from the orbit of dancehall\, house\, hip-hop\, RnB and Afro remix culture\, augmented with live percussion. \nAt any point during the gig\, get stuck into Emilie Monty’s Sonic Scavenger Hunt\, from which this gig takes its name. This is a self-directed activity set amongst the eucalyptus\, galahs and red bricks surrounding Sullivan Hall\, for kids of all ages. Put on your thinking hats\, silly hats and sun smart hats and join in to discover and delight in hidden treats. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nThe Sullivan Hall is a wheelchair accessible venue\, accessible via the footpath on inclined but smooth terrain. The music will mostly be at a comfortable volume but may occasionally be very quiet or a little loud. It will be well-lit with natural light. The event is alcohol-free and all ages. There will be free food available including gluten-free and vegan options\, and non-alcoholic drinks for sale. There are two accessible all-gender bathrooms located outside the venue\, connected via a footpath. The venue is spacious and windows and doors can be kept open throughout most of the performances for the duration. Some of the quieter performances will involve the doors and windows being closed\, and then re-opened after the performance. There is no dedicated indoor check-out space\, but you can go outside into the garden\, or even across the road into the park. Emilie Monty’s work gives the opportunity to check out and do a focussed listening activity by yourself or with a few friends whenever you feel like it.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge '24: Our inner beings complete the missing links
DESCRIPTION:This morning double bill of acoustic music may seem gentle and unassuming — and it is! But it’s also quietly one of the most psychedelic\, mind-bending experiences in the festival. Read on. \nBerlin-based duo The Long Form have committed themselves to the study and performance of music in the tuning system called “extended just intonation”. Playing on microtonal bass flute and double bass\, these performers are deeply attuned to the nuances of vibration. They will perform a 21st century masterpiece by committed composer Catherine Lamb\, Muto Infinitas. In this piece\, the sound of the two instruments intertwines to form an ever-expanding sequence of harmonies\, from which a melody ever-so-gradually unfurls. Immersing oneself in a world so attentive to resonance in space can have skin- and spine-tingling effects. \nSecond up is the unlikely duo of Blue Mountains-based accordionist Monica Brooks and local singer Sage Pbbbt. Performing just once at the NOW now festival in Sydney\, their collaboration is the stuff of mythology. Sage Pbbbt is a ritual vocalist exploring ritual magick\, meditation and improvisation. Monica Brooks’ various artistic interests are occupied by landscapes and conservation; maps\, and the idea of ‘Hjemfalden’\, or\, as can be brashly reconceived as belonging\, landscapes\, loss and love. As an improvising duo\, they circle around each other with whispery tones and fragile utterances\, performing with grace and focus. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nPS Art Space is a wheelchair accessible venue at street level from the pavement. It has one women’s bathroom and one gender-neutral\, wheelchair accessible bathroom located on the ground floor. The music will be acoustic\, it will at times be very soft. The venue is large with adequate space for social distancing. The front door will be kept open prior to the performance\, but largely closed during the show. There are no windows for ventilation in the main gallery. Lighting will be simple warm washes\, the space may be a little dark at times. There is no dedicated check-out space booked for the space currently.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge '24: Three flutters
DESCRIPTION:Three Flutters explores the vibrations of attention\, frequency and rhythm in the cosy settings of one our favourite meeting places\, Local and Aesthetic. Lit by Adelaide Harney and with a bespoke menu of snacks\, this is a cute environment to meet with the lush and vibrant end of experimental sound. \nSophia Hansen-Knarhoi and Liam Downey are young musicians invested in new possibilities in pop music. Working with cello\, digital synthesis and voice\, their new work for Audible Edge explores the tension between overstimulation and reflection. It ebbs between collage and ambient forms\, and minimalist and hyperpop aesthetics. \nNaarm-based improviser Nick Ashwood is a prolific\, committed maker\, working variously with organs\, steel-string guitar\, and synthesizers. His Audible Edge performance sees him play live in quadrophonic surround sound on his Buchla 200e synthesizer. A classic analogue instrument\, Nick’s approach is assuredly contemporary\, informed by detailed experiments with tuning systems and timbral blends. It is unashamedly gorgeous and beautiful. \nSivakumar Balakrishnan and Alex Reid are frontrunning Boorloo percussionists who are serious shredders. Working on tabla and drum kit respectively\, this performance sees them explore their friendship and diverse musical backgrounds through rhythm and improvisation. A rare collaboration between two artists that commonly work together as teacher and student\, Boorloo percussion doesn’t go much harder than this. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nLocal & Aesthetic is a wheelchair accessible venue. Entry will be via the ramp on the right hand side of the building\, rather than the front doors. It has one gender-neutral\, wheelchair accessible bathroom towards the rear of the venue. The music will have moments where it is loud\, repetitive\, percussive or overwhelming. Alcohol and food will be served at the venue. The venue is large. Doors and windows to the venue will be open during the breaks\, but closed during the music performances. The space may feel crowded at times. Lighting will not involve fast flashing lights or strobes\, and will shift and change in colour and tone throughout the performance. There is no dedicated check-out space booked for the space.

There will be a group of us travelling between gigs\, so please contact the AE team if you need someone to walk with. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nAstral Weeks is a small\, acoustically treated space. It’s a small bar and as such alcohol will be present. The music will be at a comfortable listening volume. It is wheelchair accessible at street level\, and has a gender-neutral accessible bathroom. The room is indoors and airconditioned and windows are kept closed\, meaning ventilation is limited. Lighting will be low and warm. No dedicated check-out space is available.

DESCRIPTION:All the clouds go to school is a curve-ball afternoon gig that celebrates local legends in the north-side home of indie music\, The Bird. Grab a cold one and ease into this playful\, curious and wandering array of live sets from the best of Boorloo’s underground DIY scene. \nExperimental post-rock geniuses The Definitives combine unassuming yet profound lyricism with charming ocker delivery and way-out instrumental grooves. They perform as a large collective with spoken word\, guitars\, drum machines and synthesizers. The music they make together is free-form and raucous\, yet also tender and personal. \nMulti-disciplinary artist Luka Buchanan collaborates with emerging composer (and sibling!) Ben Buchanan\, in a compelling duo of cello and spoken word. Together they explore poetic relationships in music\, conveying complex emotional landscapes in nuanced detail. Their sound is informed by a passion for improvisation\, lo-fi aesthetics and DIY methods. \nLocal improvising trio Anaxios create melodic ambience in a time-stretched dream state. Featuring Cohen Bourgault\, the prolific David West (Rat Columns\, Lace Curtain\, Burning Sensation\, Scythe)\, and Tim Loughman (Basic Mind)\, Anaxios unite their individual sensibilities towards acoustic DIY and ambient electronic practices. \nWe recommend you check out Patrick Gunasekera’s durational performance After Lili in the State Library of Western Australia’s Theatrette before hand – or even in the gaps between sets. After The Bird\, you can keep the party rolling with evening drinks and social hangs at Betweens\, featuring selections from Cooper Cooper at Astral Weeks\, before kicking on to Three flutters in the evening. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nThe Bird is a wheelchair accessible venue at street level from the pavement\, the stage area and courtyard are ramp accessible. It has one gender-neutral\, wheelchair accessible bathroom in the courtyard. The music will have moments where it is loud\, repetitive\, percussive or highly stimulating. Alcohol will be served at the venue. The venue is large\, and the front and rear door will be kept open for the duration of the performance. Music is broadcast to the courtyard and can be listened to from there if preferred. The centre of the area\, and the bar\, may be very crowded at times. Projections and lights will be used which may be bright at times (no flashing lights or strobes will be used; performers using projections have been briefed on access considerations for photosensitive epilepsy). SUMMARY:Audible Edge '24: Put 'em in a box
DESCRIPTION:Tone List and Cool Change Contemporary host the opening of “Put ‘em in a box”\, an exhibition of a creative process coordinated by Taiwanese curator Shih Ya Tien. As well as this opening event\, the Cool Change gallery is also open to the public between 11am and 4pm on Thursdays and Fridays. \nA city is like a vast container\, encompassing the chirps of birds\, barks of dogs\, human chatters\, as well as the noises of traffic and construction sites. Activities happening in nature or facilitated by humans never cease to occur and to generate sounds. These sounds\, which permeate our daily lives\, come together to form delicate fragments of a place’s past and present. They quietly accumulate beyond the bounds of language and shape our understanding of a city. In order to capture\, replicate\, represent\, and play these audio fragments\, various devices for sound production and reproduction have been invented. These devices themselves\, too\, act as containers which facilitate the reception and circulation of intricate\, mundane secrets. \nPut ’em in a Box invites 5 artists residing in different cities—Chi Po Hao\, Chloe Lin\, Samuel Beilby\, Sarah Song\, suzueri (Elico Suzuki)—to share their unique perspectives on sounds through their artistic practices\, and\, furthermore\, to exchange materials such as field recordings capturing the sounds of their local environments. This project experiments with conversions between visual and audio interfaces\, while also exploring how sounds are captured\, interpreted\, and expressed. Through the artists’ layered reception and interpretation of sounds at the locations where they listen\, in video call windows on screens\, in chats\, in mailed cardboard boxes\, and\, ultimately\, within white cubes\, the multifaceted attributes of Taipei\, Tainan\, Tokyo\, Perth\, and Helsinki are beautifully illustrated. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nThe Kings Complex building is wheelchair accessible via the ramp entry. Cool Change is located on the second level\, accessible via lift. Doorways are 83cm wide. There are no accessible bathrooms in the building. The closest accessible bathroom is located in the City of Perth Library\, 150m down the road on Hay Street. No alcohol will be served at the venue. The Cool Change Project Space is small\, and does not have windows that can be kept open. The space may feel crowded at times. There is no dedicated check-out space booked for the space currently.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge '24: After Lili
DESCRIPTION:After Lili is a homely crossover of a solo piano concert\, crip hangout space\, and 6-hour durational performance art. It explores disabled cultural histories and everyday self-advocacy\, in recognition of the French composer Lili Boulanger (1893 – 1918). Boulanger wrote contemplative and expressive music\, with ambitious structures that embedded her own crip time living with chronic illnesses. She is remembered for her professional achievements whilst challenging reductive perceptions of women composers\, and passed away when she was 24. \nIn his last month of being 24\, Patrick Gunasekera will perform Boulanger’s 1911 piano work “Prelude in Db” 24 times in After Lili. Each repeat of this cycle starts with a piano improvisation in Gunasekera’s voice at an age represented by the repeat number. This performance is intertwined with pre-recorded conversations between young disabled artists\, reflecting on young adulthood and how they relate to disabled forerunners in the arts. \nAccessibility:\n\nThe State Library of Western Australia Theatrette is a wheelchair accessible venue\, with space for wheelchairs in the front row accessible via even carpet. Below the venue\, the State Library of WA carpark has 5 ACROD parking bays on the ground level and 2 on the basement level. There are numerous wheelchair accessible\, all-gender bathrooms located throughout the library. The event is alcohol-free and all-ages. It can be attended online via YouTube\, with the chat moderated by an usher. The venue is indoors with no windows\, but it is spacious and there will be room to sit socially distanced. There is no dedicated check-out space booked for this session. \nThe performance is 6 hours long\, with allocated intermission times for breaks\, and permission to come and go at any time. Seating will include upright theatre chairs accessed both by a staircase and on ground level. There will be (blankets\, cushions\, and beanbags) to lie down on closer to the stage. \nAfter Lili is a relaxed performance with low sensory input. Lighting will be gentle but bright enough to move around in. The music will be slow\, swelling and comforting.\nPre-recorded voices in the work will be captioned and projected above the piano. \n3 people with lived experience of disability will be ushering the event. \nAfter Lili contains some discussions about (advocacy fatigue\, disabled mental health)\, and is created to be a comfortable experience for audiences. If you are planning to attend the full 6-hour performance\, we recommend you bring your own food to eat outside during intermissions. There are water fountains inside the venue\, and the nearest café is Epoch at WA Museum Boola Bardip.

DESCRIPTION:Audible Edge’s grand opening is Body the body\, a wild experiment in permission\, possibility and play. Somewhere between the exploratory music concert and the club\, it celebrates the full spectrum of what Audible Edge hopes to be: a safe place for all to experience joy and get silly at the edge of what’s sonically possible. Starting with a Welcome to Country and concert-style performances\, the night gradually gives way to dancing\, communion and experimental physical performance. \nThe centrepiece of the show is our Audible Edge commission for this year\, Myriad Sun in the Block Universe. A four-sided screen made of cold fog allows a gaze into a parallel-universe-Walyalup manifested by wildcard visual designer Tom Rogers. Inside the Block\, the band performs new\, recent and improvised material which references noise music\, rap and footwork. \nBefore that\, Daniel Garlett will welcome us to Country with one of his powerful didgeridoo performances. Crash hot percussionist Rebecca Lloyd-Jones\, visiting from Meanjin\, plays new composition “Thought Sectors” by Sarah Hennies. Committed to minimalism and repetition\, Hennies’ work explores queer & trans identity\, psychoacoustics and the neurology of creativity. This is followed by a live electronic set from Manila-based Joee Mejias. Her work explores the edge of pop music\, making oozy\, amorphous songs and ambient experiments. \nThe rest of the night is soundtracked by Wayang\, Lia T & Rok Riley\, experienced DJs well-known in the underground club scene. At midnight\, physical performances by drag and movement artists Bobby Russell\, Jxnior and Miss Phoria explore mental health and queer embodiment with playful and experimental sound tracks. \nThis is hosted within a world of fabric and light designed by Desmond Tan and Adelaide Harney. Softening the industrial surrounds of PS\, they’ll gently hold our embodied explorations together. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nPS Art Space is a wheelchair accessible venue at street level from the pavement. It has one women’s bathroom and one gender-neutral\, wheelchair accessible bathroom located on the ground floor. The music will have moments where it is very loud\, repetitive\, percussive or highly stimulating\, increasingly so towards the later parts of the evening. Alcohol will be served at the venue. The venue is large\, and the front door will be kept open for the duration of the performance\, but there are no windows for ventilation in the main gallery. The centre of the area\, and the bar\, may be very crowded at times. A fog machine will be used for some of the performances. Projections and lights will be used which may be bright at times (no flashing lights or strobes will be used; performers using projections have been briefed on access considerations for photosensitive epilepsy). Two “rave aunties” will be present in the space to provide water and other assistance if required. There is no dedicated check-out space booked for the space currently.

DESCRIPTION:Set your alarm clock for a meditative sunrise listening session with Matt Rösner.\nIn partnership with Tone List\, WA Museum Boola Bardip presents an experimental concert series set against the backdrop of the sunrise\, perched in the highest reaches of our eastern terrace. \nWe invite you to start your day early\, sit with a coffee and take a moment to reflect in peace while watching Boorloo’s east metropolitan area light up from the base of the hills to the steps of the Museum\, scored by WA Musician\, Matt Rösner. \nLevel 3 terrace nook (indoors\, warm and undercover) transforms into a serene performance space for the artist to take you on a journey over one and a half hours of sunrise. \nAccessibility: The performance takes place in a fully wheelchair accessible space. \n\nMatt Rösner\nRösner is a sound artist from Wadandi Boodja\, Western Australia. \nThe open spaces around Rösner’s home infuses his work with an organic sense of space and time constructed using various instruments\, custom-built software patches and detailed field recording studies. \nDrawing inspiration and influence from the colours\, seasonal shifts and sounds of his surroundings\, Rösner produces an immersive listening space\, compositions for reflection and quiet mediation. \nIn a recording career spanning 20 years\, Rösner has released records on room40\, 12k\, Hidden Shoal\, Apestaartje\, Miatera/12×50 and Meupe\, alongside various compilation releases on Australian and international labels. \nMatt is one half of the Perth experimental duo\, Glided with Adam Trainer and has collaborated with Dr Cameron Webb\, aka Seaworthy\, to produce three records documenting at risk environments in southern New South Wales.

DESCRIPTION:SAVE-THE-DATE: FULL PROGRAM TO BE ANNOUNCED MARCH 13 \nAudible Edge is a festival of exploratory music presented by Tone List. It’s geared towards exploring the marginal\, experimental\, and not-normal. It happens yearly in Boorloo and Walyalup\, on Whadjuk Noongar land. In 2024\, it begins at sunrise on April 26\, and ends at moonrise on April 28. \n  \nSince 2017\, Audible Edge has platformed exploratory music in Boorloo and strengthened the ties connecting us to the scene globally. We’ve persisted through COVID disruptions\, taking on many new shapes and forms in the process. This year\, we’re excited to return to our roots: three days of back-to-back events\, packed with great (weird) music. \n  \nAudible Edge celebrates play\, freak energy\, silliness\, ephemerality and “getting stuck into it”. We see these as meaningful ways of engaging with new experiences (it’s not all chin-scratching seriousness). We love local\, emergent\, queer and contingent projects. We love straight-faced experimentation rubbing shoulders with unhinged wildness (or when you can’t tell which is which!). We strive to make accessible contexts to appreciate all of this. We want to share the radical potency of our community\, and invite friends from distant lands and waters to be a part of it too. \n  \nOur program is full of wild and weird high-contrast bookings. Sometimes they contain contradictory approaches or unresolved tensions. We invite any and all responses to this. We find Audible Edge is best when listeners\, hosts and makers all share in the messy process of ‘making sense’. (Whatever that even means.) \n  \nAudible Edge 2024 also features a Night School: a pre-festival program of weekly workshops. The Night School explores how we might write our own stories\, build our own platforms\, and listen better. A local\, interstate or international guest facilitates each session. It runs from March 24 to April 21 (and isn’t always at night). \n  \nAudible Edge received an Art Music State Luminary Award in 2023 from APRA AMCOS and the Australian Music Centre. This recognised five years of contributions to the creative music culture of this side of the continent. It has received 4.5 and 5 star reviews in Limelight Magazine\, and coverage by various other publications.

DESCRIPTION:Sound Exploration Fremantle is a monthly community workshop series at Sullivan Hall in White Gum Valley. This month\, we join them to co-present a workshop with Japanese improvising legend Shoji Hano. Born in 1955\, Hano has played with historical titans in improvised music like Peter Brotzmann\, Johannes Bauer & Kaoru Abe. \nParticipants are invited to listen to and play duos with Shoji\, and hear a lecture from him about core concepts in his work. We’ll share in a reflective group discussion\, and finally play all together. \nSnacks and tea available for the breaks. \n\nAccessibility\n\nThe Sullivan Hall is a wheelchair accessible venue\, accessible via the footpath on inclined but smooth terrain. The music may be loud at times. It will be well-lit with natural light. There are two accessible all-gender bathrooms located outside the venue\, connected via a footpath. The event is alcohol-free and all-ages. The venue is spacious and windows and doors can be kept open throughout the workshop for ventilation. There is no dedicated indoor check-out space\, but you can go outside into the garden\, or even across the road into the park.

DESCRIPTION:Tactus: derived from Latin\, ‘to touch’\, also a term for a 15/16th-century rhythmic measurement. \nIn 2017\, a renaissance flute was recovered from a shipwreck in the Markermeer\, North Holland. Made materially fragile by the passage of time\, the instrument was nevertheless preserved intact in its watery solitude for 500 years. Archeologists and historians can only speculate on the flute’s origin\, directed by material clues\, including a small roll of Germanic text found curled inside the instrument. Replicas have since been made of the flute\, reviving a sound lost to the ocean for centuries. \nThe instrument’s journey unfolds in Tactus\, a new audio-visual work by Tura’s Summers Night alumni Kate Milligan\, Olivia Davies and WA flautist Jonty Coy. In a meeting of experimental music-making and historically informed performance\, this intimate work explores the materiality of cultural heritage as it is transformed by time and water. Field recordings from the Markermeer mingle with chant\, sunken voices imploring “Ave\, maris stella” (Hail\, star of the sea). \nCoy is joined by early music ensemble HIP Company\, in an exploration of renaissance music. Speculating on the flute’s likely journey down the Rhine River and time-traveling to 2024\, the flute undergoes a renaissance in and of itself\, giving new life to this instrument in the 21st century. \nProduced by Tura and commissioned by the APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund\, Tactus traverses time and place in a performance where postmodern and renaissance artistic practices unite to submerge audiences in an antique\, experimental\, sunken sound-world seldom heard in Australia. \nTwo performances Apr 19/20 at 7pm.

Her projects include free-jazz ensemble Djalan Djalan and the post-rock outfit Pale Ribbons Tossed into the Dark. \nRoss Bolleter is a composer\, poet\, and Zen master who created and developed the Ruined Piano genre over the last 30 years. He has numerous international releases. His book on ruined piano and its musics\, The Du Piano-épave (The Well Weathered Piano) was published in a bilingual edition by Lenka Lente Press in late 2017. \nEduardo Cossio is a Peruvian-Australian musician based in Boorloo since 2005. He has led his own bands and written music for ensembles\, short-films\, and dance productions. Eduardo and Ross Bolleter launched Dark Shine their debut album in 2023. Such & Such their second collaborative effort will be released on the French imprint Thödol Records this year.

Soils are fascinating and diverse ecosystems that support multitudes of life forms\, and many interconnected processes of growth and decay. Often we forget what is under our feet\, and how important soil is to sustaining life on Earth. \n‘Think like a Worm’ is an opportunity to think more about soil\, within the garden in the context of growing food\, but also beyond that. This event is a form of community collaboration that amplifies stories around the local spaces of the City of Stirling. SUMMARY:Audible Edge Night School: Creative tools and the softwarisation of cultural production
DESCRIPTION:Edited by Frédérik Lesage and Michael Terren\, Creative Tools and the Softwarization of Cultural Production explores how creativity is increasingly designed\, marketed\, and produced through digital products and services which\, the editors argue\, are not politically\, economically or culturally neutral. \nFor this Night School session Michael Terren will lead a discussion building off of ideas expressed in the book. This will explore how artistic praxis has been co-opted by the service economy\, rebranding it as the ‘creative industries’. It will explore the consequences of this co-opting: insecure work as the norm\, erosion of work-life balance\, erosion of unions\, and so on. Terren will invite us to discuss how artists might seize the means of cultural production in our techno-feudalist setting\, and the need for artists to critically re-assess “creativity” and “artistic expression” without becoming blueprints for global capital to co-opt. \nPaul Boyé\, Sage J Harlow and Sze Tsang will join the latter half of the discussion to offer provocations. \n\nAccessibility\n\nThe State Library of Western Australia Theatrette is a wheelchair accessible venue\, with space for wheelchairs in the front row accessible via even carpet. There are numerous wheelchair accessible\, all-gender bathrooms located throughout the library. The event is alcohol-free and all-ages. It can be attended online via Jitsi\, and will be live-captioned using Jitsi’s in-built captioning service. This or another live-captioning service will be available to view via projection in the venue. The venue is indoors with no windows\, but it is spacious and there will be room to sit socially distanced. The stage will be warmly and brightly lit\, whilst the audience seating ranks will be dimly lit. There is no dedicated check-out space booked for this session.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge Night School: Writing as/and experimental sonic cultural practice
DESCRIPTION:This participatory workshop focusses on experimental and critical writing practices\, techniques and histories in their alignment with experimental art and music cultures. It’s an invitation to discover the role and possibility of writing in our underground music community. Any experience levels are welcome. \nWe will explore how writing (including the adjacent areas of art writing\, artists’ writing\, and art criticism) aligns itself with the affective dimensions of music and listening practices. These are practices that might require capabilities of being attentive\, playful\, experimental\, interrogative\, porous\, open\, site-responsive\, and reflective. We will also consider the changing role of critical writing\, reading and self-publishing within contemporary audio art and experimental music cultures and other collaborative artistic spaces that exist in a critical relation to the commodity form. \nParticipants will engage in practice-based reading and writing tasks\, and collaborate in addressing a set of questions\, including: how can writing support the political economy of DIY cultural practice\, working to hold open the indeterminacies of artistic process\, and registering critical and creative zones of refusal and dissent? How can writing practices be part of a tactical toolkit to support a localised scale of community in such spaces? How can it facilitate experimental artistic cultures and practices’ ability to find and retain critical autonomy\, self-determination and self-reflexivity? Can we collectively model an ethics of peer-to-peer transmission and localised distribution of art and work within the wholesale capitalist co-option of the digital social commons? \n\nAccessibility\n\nSally will deliver this workshop online via Jitsi\, from Naarm. Participants are encouraged to attend in-person for post-workshop reflections\, but can also attend purely online. \nThe State Library of Western Australia Geographe Room is a wheelchair accessible venue. It is located on the ground floor. There are numerous wheelchair accessible\, all-gender bathrooms located throughout the library. The event is alcohol-free and all-ages. DESCRIPTION:Opt-out is a workshop focused on ‘opting out’ of the attention economies of capitalist platforms and developing alternatives that foster listening online. Facilitated by Ben Byrne\, it will feature a presentation of some of his work with Avantwhatever\, a forum for digital sound\, art\, and design. This will include the decentralised social media server Avantwhatever.org\, which workshop participants will be able to experiment with and will be provided as an online gathering space during the Audible Edge Festival. Participants will be invited to share their own struggles\, with the infinite scroll of commercial social media\, listening to and paying for music deliberately and ethically\, connecting with other musicians and listeners online\, or otherwise. Ben will then lead the group in discussing the possibilities of decentralised technologies and tactics for inhabiting the open web in creative ways. \n\nAccessibility\n\nBen will deliver this workshop online via Jitsi\, from Helsinki.
