SUMMARY:Tactus (Kate Milligan\, Olivia Davies\, Jonty Coy & HIP Company)
DESCRIPTION:Tactus: derived from Latin\, ‘to touch’\, also a term for a 15/16th-century rhythmic measurement. \nIn 2017\, a renaissance flute was recovered from a shipwreck in the Markermeer\, North Holland. Made materially fragile by the passage of time\, the instrument was nevertheless preserved intact in its watery solitude for 500 years. Archeologists and historians can only speculate on the flute’s origin\, directed by material clues\, including a small roll of Germanic text found curled inside the instrument. Replicas have since been made of the flute\, reviving a sound lost to the ocean for centuries. \nThe instrument’s journey unfolds in Tactus\, a new audio-visual work by Tura’s Summers Night alumni Kate Milligan\, Olivia Davies and WA flautist Jonty Coy. In a meeting of experimental music-making and historically informed performance\, this intimate work explores the materiality of cultural heritage as it is transformed by time and water. Field recordings from the Markermeer mingle with chant\, sunken voices imploring “Ave\, maris stella” (Hail\, star of the sea). \nCoy is joined by early music ensemble HIP Company\, in an exploration of renaissance music. Speculating on the flute’s likely journey down the Rhine River and time-traveling to 2024\, the flute undergoes a renaissance in and of itself\, giving new life to this instrument in the 21st century. \nProduced by Tura and commissioned by the APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund\, Tactus traverses time and place in a performance where postmodern and renaissance artistic practices unite to submerge audiences in an antique\, experimental\, sunken sound-world seldom heard in Australia. \nTwo performances Apr 19/20 at 7pm.

Her projects include free-jazz ensemble Djalan Djalan and the post-rock outfit Pale Ribbons Tossed into the Dark. \nRoss Bolleter is a composer\, poet\, and Zen master who created and developed the Ruined Piano genre over the last 30 years. He has numerous international releases. His book on ruined piano and its musics\, The Du Piano-épave (The Well Weathered Piano) was published in a bilingual edition by Lenka Lente Press in late 2017. \nEduardo Cossio is a Peruvian-Australian musician based in Boorloo since 2005. He has led his own bands and written music for ensembles\, short-films\, and dance productions. Eduardo and Ross Bolleter launched Dark Shine their debut album in 2023. Such & Such their second collaborative effort will be released on the French imprint Thödol Records this year.

Soils are fascinating and diverse ecosystems that support multitudes of life forms\, and many interconnected processes of growth and decay. Often we forget what is under our feet\, and how important soil is to sustaining life on Earth. \n‘Think like a Worm’ is an opportunity to think more about soil\, within the garden in the context of growing food\, but also beyond that. This event is a form of community collaboration that amplifies stories around the local spaces of the City of Stirling. The audio-visual work will be shown in the garden as projections with sound and light installed in several locations. \nAccessibility info\nThe audio-visual work will be installed along the garden pathways\, which are wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:Audible Edge Night School: Creative tools and the softwarisation of cultural production
DESCRIPTION:Edited by Frédérik Lesage and Michael Terren\, Creative Tools and the Softwarization of Cultural Production explores how creativity is increasingly designed\, marketed\, and produced through digital products and services which\, the editors argue\, are not politically\, economically or culturally neutral. \nFor this Night School session Michael Terren will lead a discussion building off of ideas expressed in the book. This will explore how artistic praxis has been co-opted by the service economy\, rebranding it as the ‘creative industries’. It will explore the consequences of this co-opting: insecure work as the norm\, erosion of work-life balance\, erosion of unions\, and so on. Terren will invite us to discuss how artists might seize the means of cultural production in our techno-feudalist setting\, and the need for artists to critically re-assess “creativity” and “artistic expression” without becoming blueprints for global capital to co-opt. \nPaul Boyé\, Sage J Harlow and Sze Tsang will join the latter half of the discussion to offer provocations. \n\nAccessibility\n\nThe State Library of Western Australia Theatrette is a wheelchair accessible venue\, with space for wheelchairs in the front row accessible via even carpet. There are numerous wheelchair accessible\, all-gender bathrooms located throughout the library. The event is alcohol-free and all-ages. It can be attended online via Jitsi\, and will be live-captioned using Jitsi’s in-built captioning service. This or another live-captioning service will be available to view via projection in the venue. SUMMARY:Audible Edge Night School: Writing as/and experimental sonic cultural practice
DESCRIPTION:This participatory workshop focusses on experimental and critical writing practices\, techniques and histories in their alignment with experimental art and music cultures. It’s an invitation to discover the role and possibility of writing in our underground music community. Any experience levels are welcome. \nWe will explore how writing (including the adjacent areas of art writing\, artists’ writing\, and art criticism) aligns itself with the affective dimensions of music and listening practices. These are practices that might require capabilities of being attentive\, playful\, experimental\, interrogative\, porous\, open\, site-responsive\, and reflective. We will also consider the changing role of critical writing\, reading and self-publishing within contemporary audio art and experimental music cultures and other collaborative artistic spaces that exist in a critical relation to the commodity form. \nParticipants will engage in practice-based reading and writing tasks\, and collaborate in addressing a set of questions\, including: how can writing support the political economy of DIY cultural practice\, working to hold open the indeterminacies of artistic process\, and registering critical and creative zones of refusal and dissent? How can writing practices be part of a tactical toolkit to support a localised scale of community in such spaces? How can it facilitate experimental artistic cultures and practices’ ability to find and retain critical autonomy\, self-determination and self-reflexivity? Can we collectively model an ethics of peer-to-peer transmission and localised distribution of art and work within the wholesale capitalist co-option of the digital social commons? \n\nAccessibility\n\nSally will deliver this workshop online via Jitsi\, from Naarm. DESCRIPTION:Opt-out is a workshop focused on ‘opting out’ of the attention economies of capitalist platforms and developing alternatives that foster listening online. SUMMARY:Audible Edge Night School: Hand-made music albums\, a hands-on workshop
DESCRIPTION:Boorloo-via-Montréal label Mystery & Wonder are known for their lovingly-made merchandise including hand-assembled CD cases\, woodcut-printed vinyl sleeves\, and ubiquitous black-and-white tote bags. They’ve toured extensively internationally\, taking boxes of merch with them. In this workshop you are invited to make a merch item from scratch – die-cutting and folding paper\, ink-stamping and gluing\, and even burning audio onto a CD-R (or bringing your own dubbed tape). The workshop will discuss not just the art of making the thing\, but also the love and care behind independent artistry\, and how this extends to making and sharing merch. \nParticipants are invited to bring their own materials (paper\, stamps\, Lino cuts) if they have a preference\, and a CD-R or dubbed cassette. Otherwise\, participants can simply use all the materials provided to make a sleeve and burn a CD with their digital files at the workshop. Participants can also bring a digital copy of liner notes and album credits for printing\, if available. It’s also fine to show up totally empty-handed and start from scratch. \n\nAccessibility\n\nThe State Library of Western Australia Geographe Room is a wheelchair accessible venue. It is located on the ground floor. There are numerous wheelchair accessible\, all-gender bathrooms located throughout the library. The event is alcohol-free and all-ages. The room will be brightly and clearly lit. Live captioning can be arranged for the workshop. The workshop will use shared tools: hand sanitiser will be available. The venue is enclosed with no windows that can be opened. It will not be overcrowded\, but depending on in-person attendance numbers\, it may not have spare for more than 1.5m physical distancing.

DESCRIPTION:Ahmed El Ghazoly aka ZULI\, is a multi-instrumentalist\, producer\, and sound artist from Cairo\, Egypt. \nInternationally\, ZULI is best known for his releases on Lee Gamble’s UIQ – which included a string of EPs as well as his debut LP Terminal\, an album that highlighted the depth in his productions\, as he simultaneously combines experimentations in rap/hip-hop with music for listening as well as the dancefloor. The Italian Haunter Records also saw the release of the infamous Trigger Finger EP which went on to be remixed by the likes of TSVI\, AYA\, Acre and more. \nIn 2019\, ZULI launched a video series ‘irsh’ together with Rama where they curated and invited artists to play video recorded sets in a social setting. Only having the chance to record two episodes before the pandemic struck\, they launched a label and released the first irsh compilation in September 2020 which highlighted talent from Cairo and the Middle East. The second compilation is currently in the works. \nLocally in Cairo\, ZULI is best known for his work in the Hip-hop scene\, particularly with rapper Abyusif (who appeared on ZULI’s 2018 album ‘Terminal’) but also in the Electronic music scene as part of the now defunct collective Kairo Ist Koming (KIK) between 2012-2015. It’s there he founded Cairo’s alternative music venue and club\, VENT\, together with Asem Tag aka ($$TAG$$)\, which existed between 2013-2015 before transforming their project into a namesake club night and festival. Around the same time\, VENT London was established at the now closed Dance Tunnel venue by a third partner\, Mohamed Elshourbagui. \nZULI’s music garners support all over the board ranging from the likes of Aphex Twin and Autechre\, to Ben UFO and Bradley Zero\, even Richie Hawtin through its wide ranging sound. He joined the NTS Radio roster in 2016 with a monthly show that includes a dedicated hour to guest appearances from up and coming DJs and ones he meets touring around the world. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday March 13 from 6pm at Astral Weeks for a drink to celebrate the return of the festival and be the first to see the program in full.  \n  \nThe night features contributions from two projects which carry Audible Edge’s spirit of contrast\, play and improvisation. \n  \nAudible Edge’s very own web designer and oddball experimentalist Sookie will present one of their fabled DJ sets between 6-9pm. Weaving vinyl\, lo-fi field recordings and Youtube video samples together the vibe is joyfully intimate and impeccably strange. \n  \nAt 7pm\, Avant-jazz quartet Group Therapy\, featuring Djuna Lee (bass)\, Jessica Carlton (trumpet)\, Simon Charles (saxophones) and Pete Evans (drums)\, will play a live set of driving and rhythmic improvised music.  \n  \nThere might be other silly antics\, maybe a brief speech or two. Festival curators Annika Moses & Josten Myburgh may share some strange items from their record collections later into the night. \n  \nPrinted programs will be there in abundance and maybe some other surprises. Astral Weeks’ wine list is really good — and be sure to take a punt on the in-house curated cocktails. \n  \nEntry is free\, but we encourage you to donate generously to the Audible Edge fundraiser. \nAudible Edge is a festival of exploratory music presented by Tone List. It’s geared towards exploring the marginal\, experimental\, and not-normal. It happens yearly in Boorloo and Walyalup\, on Whadjuk Noongar land. SUMMARY:an intervening space\, especially a very small one - Daniel Harrison & Tessa Beale
DESCRIPTION:‘an intervening space\, especially a very small one’ is a new body of work built upon a collaboration between visual artist Tessa Beale and composer Daniel Harrison in response to the Dwerda Weelardinup (Cantonment Hill) site. \nThe artists are interested in the transient nature of observed shifts in light\, shadow\, texture and movement and the potential for quiet moments encountered in nature when in unhurried time. Via sound and visual output\, Harrison and Beale go about extracting particular qualities\, properties and characteristics\, changing the scale at which things are observed and establishing new conditions for these observations. \nThe composition and interpretation of these environments is based on a tacit contemplation of the sounds and the microenvironment that it was sampled from. By identifying a shadow\, a movement\, a quality of light or a texture detected in the surrounding natural environment of this site we aimed to create an immersive experience for the viewer. \nVisual artist Tessa Beale and composer Daniel Harrison are excited to present their collection of new works at Current Gallery opening Wednesday 28th February (6-9pm). From his first musical genesis as a member of Kraftwerk and his work as Harmonia with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius\, Michael has etched out an entirely personal sound world\, most recently captured on a string of solo and collaborative albums. \nJoined by long time collaborators Hans Lampe (La Düsseldorf)\, Franz Bargmann (exCamera) and Vittoria Maccabruni\, this performance celebrates 50 years of NEU! and its groundbreaking legacy. It takes the now legendary NEU! canon and reworks it as a tribute to Klaus Dinger and in recognition of Michael Rother’s continued exploration of his utterly unique and profound way of music making. DESCRIPTION:Kinds of Light is a concert series for creative music in the striking surrounds of PS Art Space in Walyalup/Fremantle. Curated by composer and improvising musician Josten Myburgh\, Kinds of Light celebrates ambitious experimentation\, careful musicianship\, and sounds that are relevant to this place and time. It is programmed across style and genre\, excited by the love and rigour that goes into music that defies categories. \nKinds of Light kicks off in 2024 with a co-curation with Boorloo-via-Montreal label Mystery & Wonder. E Millar will present a live instantiation of her artificial field recording project. Craig Pedersen\, joined by Michael Terren\, Djuna Lee\, Josten Myburgh & Sage Pbbbt\, will perform his composition “residues”. \nE Millar is a builder of intricate kinetic sound sculptures using recycled consumer-grade electronics and found objects. His collective compositional output\, largely in the form of text-based scores on index cards\, embodies the dream of an ever-shifting body of work\, flexible to the expressive needs of the present. We are interested in work that takes care with sound and timbre\, structure and form\, is close\, direct and in high-definition. Each artist will present a performance of 30-40 minutes duration\, with a break in-between. \nAccessibility: The event is held on the ground floor of PS which is wheelchair accessible on even concrete flooring at street level. Gender-neutral and accessible bathrooms are located down the stairs on the ground floor. There is ample seating available and the venue is very spacious. The music is dynamic and may at times be extremely quiet or quite loud. No strobes or flashing lights will be used. \nTone List acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the traditional custodians of where we work (Walyalup and Boorloo).

DESCRIPTION:Join composer and sound artist Elizabeth Millar to explore a variety of historical graphic scores and alternative forms of musical notation including images\, video and text. Discussion will be interspersed with group playing. In the second workshop we will explore further examples and workshop graphic scores proposed by group members. \nThese sessions are open to people from all backgrounds and levels of experience. Participants should come ready and willing to experiment with sound and music in a group setting. Sound objects and materials will be available.
