Your generosity is admired and appreciated. \nSchedule \nfrom 5pm: hangs\, home cooked food\, limited edition merch\, silly antics\, and Sookie (504\, The Noise and Vibration Council) sharing some music and ways of listening to music. Bring a picnic rug and lounge in the sun outside the hall – it’s beaut. \nafter 7pm: live performances by \nGreat Statue – is it scary drag\, avant-garde electronic music or just Really Fun? \nTone List Orchestra – legendary one-off large-ensemble collaboration\, featuring\nPedro Alvarez (quenas)\, Sally Ann McIntyre (electronics)\, Simon Charles (soprano saxophone)\, Jameson Feakes (guitar)\, Dale Gorfinkel (Naarm\, self-made instruments)\, Djuna Lee (double bass)\, Annika Moses (voice)\, Josten Myburgh (alto saxophone)\, Dan O’Connor (trumpet)\, Craig Pedersen (trumpet)\, Sage Pbbbt (voices)\, Laura Altman (Sydney\, clarinet & electronics)\, Thea Rossen (percussion)\, Gracie Smith (electric guitar & electronics)\, Stuart Orchard (self-made instruments)\, Naoko Uemoto (saxophones) & Saskia Willinge (flute). \nWhy do we need to raise funds? \nTone List is a volunteer-run\, registered not-for-profit charity organisation. It costs us about $3000 a year to maintain insurances\, business registrations\, and software subscriptions. As we pay all of our ticket money to artists\, we have previously covered these costs by including them in grant budgets where appropriate. Our applications both this and last year towards project funding for 2023 were all rejected\, leaving us without this usual financial base. \nHere is why those things are worth paying for: \n– our NFP status lets us apply for and auspice funding to support projects in the scene. We frequently volunteer our time to do this and have paid tens of thousands in artist fees to musicians through our own projects and via auspices. \n– we’re a channel for philanthropic support for the scene and have supported tax-deductible donations being directed to pay artists for performances and new work \n– we advocate for the scene internationally and have aided in getting WA artists to festivals and concert series’ interstate and overseas through the networks we’ve established via the label and our concert programming. \n– our standing as an award-winning\, critically acclaimed platform allows us to write valuable letters of support to support internationally touring artists in their applications for funding inbound travel\, and Perth artists acquiring funding for projects. We do this dozens of times a year. \n– we advocate for local institutions and festivals to take the local experimental music scene seriously\, involving artists from the scene in their programming and paying artists and curators proper rates for their work. \n– artists on our roster receive benefits like free BandCamp Pro subscriptions for their own profiles. \n– we can maintain a digital archive of our activities for posterity. \nWe welcome questions and comments from you all! \n  \nAccessibility: The Sullivan Hall is a wheelchair accessible space. Both bathrooms are all-gender and wheelchair accessible and are located outside of the space\, accessible via even terrain (concrete path). Both doors of the venue will be open for much of the day to ensure airflow; we will only close them if there are noise concerns. Tone List promotes “being how you are” at the show\, you can move around\, lie on the floor\, check out and go outside if you need fresh air or a break\, etc. There is parking available immediately outside the venue\, however it fills up quickly. The music will at times be loud. \nTone List acknowledges the sovereign Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the traditional and rightful custodians of where we work (Walyalup and Boorloo).

DESCRIPTION:Tom Avgenicos presents Ghosts Between Streams\, an ode to nature via a rich tapestry of sounds\, with Delay 45. \nGhosts Between Streams is an interdisciplinary work by 2022 Freedman Fellow\, composer and trumpeter Tom Avgenicos. It blends chamber music\, contemporary jazz and electronics to explore the power struggle between nature and urbanisation. With an overarching environmental concern\, the work captures the notion of solastalgia – the sadness felt at the loss or change of a beloved place in nature. \nInspired by Avgenicos’ daily walks through Stringybark Creek Reserve on Cammeraygal Country (Sydney)\, Ghosts Between Streamspaints a vivid picture of the reserve’s rich flora and fauna\, now threatened by urban development. This is reflected in the work through an exploration of contrasts: light and dark\, consonance and dissonance\, smooth and jagged\, acoustic and electronic. \nGhosts is performed by Avgenicos’ long-standing quartet\, Delay 45\, featuring Roshan Kumarage (piano)\, Dave Quinn (bass) and Ashley Stoneham (drums). Together they create a rich tapestry of sounds and textures that are woven together into an epic work that promises to take audiences on a spellbinding journey brimming with emotional power and resonance.

DESCRIPTION:A “whimsical and free” solo performance for double bass and voice. \nHelen Svoboda is a double bassist\, vocalist and composer. In the words of the ABC Music Show’s Andrew Ford\, she is “a musician who absolutely defies categorisation”. Her work explores the melodic potential of the contemporary double bass\, intricately weaving extended techniques and overtones with vocal tessitura to explore themes of sonic unity amidst abstract songwriting. Her performance practice emits a childlike\, quirky energy\, with a flair for “allowing difficult ideas to sound whimsical and free”\, according to vocalist Kristin Berardi. \nFor this performance\, she presents a series of new solo works for double bass and voice\, composed during her time in Finland as part of the Helsinki International Artist Programme earlier this year. Inspired by the arctic biosphere on Suomenlinna\, the materials feature extended overtone techniques and short songs akin to a stream of sonic consciousness.

SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: Kastoms performance with Taloi Havini\, Ben Hakalitz & Mario Celestino
DESCRIPTION:Kastoms is a new iteration of Taloi Havini’s Answer to the Call\, an immersive twenty-two speaker installation\, composed in dialogue with contemporary arts practice\, scientific investigation and customary wisdom. \nOriginally created after her residency onboard the R/V Falkor (Schmidt Ocean Institute) and premiered with the TBA21-Academy at Ocean Space\, Venice (2021)\, this significant work is now re-imagined in Australia for the first time\, resounding in a series of cycles specifically for the Old Customs House in Fremantle. \nAn island platform will lie at the centre\, its shape and blue tones will evoke the depth and expanse of our understanding of Oceania from the viewpoint of the artists homeland\, the island of Buka\, Bougainville. Listeners will be absorbed into a meditative and gradual evolving soundtrack\, designed by Hayley Forward. Hydrophone recordings of sea floor sonar mapping are layered with ocean chants and Indigenous instruments composed by musician’s Ben Hakalitz and Mario Celestino. Traversing beyond a scientific lens\, Kastoms utilises an ancient call and response method as an invitation for all to enter a temporal space created for deep-listening and relating. \nLike the ocean\, Kastoms is a work of sensory depth\, ancient dialogues and cultural contemporary resonance. Never the type to rest on their laurels\, Scratching have hinted at an extra-special set for Goolugatup Sounds 16; whatever it is is likely to be bold and bright\, emanating life-affirming creative energy.\nTravelling West from Sydney/Gadigal country is MARCUS WHALE\, one of the most unmistakeable presences in the Australian DIY music scene. When he’s not making avant-pop with long running duo Collarbones or gothy punk with Perfect Actress\, Marcus’ solo practice excavates the “blurry intersection between desire and religion” and “the poetics of memory and ghostliness.” His crystalline voice is typically front and centre – with dramatic electronics\, heady percussion and warped club rhythms forming a an ornate\, at times grotesque architecture for it to inhabit and diffuse. Effortlessly folding in the aesthetics of opera\, horror cinema and hyperreal erotica\, Marcus crafts singular moods and an entirely unforgettable live show.\nLAURA ALTMAN\, also based on Gadigal Country\, is a cherished fixture in Sydney’s experimental sound community – known for her roles in projects like Splinter Orchestra\, Prophets\, Great Waitress\, Couch (with Low Flung) and many more. As a composer and solo performer\, Laura explores everything from painterly drones and “extended techniques” to song-forms\, social practice and the zoomed-in details of timbre and resonance. SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: Resonant
DESCRIPTION:Resonant is an exhibition bringing together two distinct installations at PS Art Space by Bori Benko and Rob Kettels. In conversation with space\, time and\, one another. Resonant will transport viewers into an entangled vibrational and sonic world\, into a space of shared visual lyricism and intertwined histories. \nBori Benko’s Songs to the Universe makes visible the vibrating forces beyond our perception. Everything in our world\, in the digital landscape and within our bodies\, hum with vibrational energy. Bori captures these different frequencies and unique tunes in her moving mechanical sculptures. Revealed in this exhibition are the harmonies\, patterns and travelling waves that are usually invisible to the human eye. \nRob Kettels’ installation delves into the legacy of maritime time-balls – now obsolete navigational instruments – which served as signalling devices for mariners beginning in the early 19th century. Inspired by a historical incident in 1911 when Fremantle’s time-ball malfunctioned\, dropping at the incorrect time\, Rob’s artwork unfolds in a fictional narrative portraying a ship’s disorientating return to Europe with its timepiece mistakenly set. DESCRIPTION:Kastoms is a new iteration of Taloi Havini’s Answer to the Call\, an immersive twenty-two speaker installation\, composed in dialogue with contemporary arts practice\, scientific investigation and customary wisdom. \nOriginally created after her residency onboard the R/V Falkor (Schmidt Ocean Institute) and premiered with the TBA21-Academy at Ocean Space\, Venice (2021)\, this significant work is now re-imagined in Australia for the first time\, resounding in a series of cycles specifically for the Old Customs House in Fremantle. \nAn island platform will lie at the centre\, its shape and blue tones will evoke the depth and expanse of our understanding of Oceania from the viewpoint of the artists homeland\, the island of Buka\, Bougainville. Listeners will be absorbed into a meditative and gradual evolving soundtrack\, designed by Hayley Forward. Hydrophone recordings of sea floor sonar mapping are layered with ocean chants and Indigenous instruments composed by musician’s Ben Hakalitz and Mario Celestino. Traversing beyond a scientific lens\, Kastoms utilises an ancient call and response method as an invitation for all to enter a temporal space created for deep-listening and relating. \nLike the ocean\, Kastoms is a work of sensory depth\, ancient dialogues and cultural contemporary resonance. DESCRIPTION:Fremantle’s Inner Harbour will be transformed by The Port’s Call\, an expansive sonic installation by Thomas Supple and Byron J Scullin. Beginning at dawn on the first day of the Biennale and continuing until dusk on Sunday 12 November\, the arrival and departure of each large vessel (regardless of the time of day)\, will be signalled by a bespoke soundscape. \nWith each passing vessel\, a continually changing symphony of sound\, using long-range acoustic technology\, will echo throughout the Port. DESCRIPTION:Kinds of Light is a concert series for creative music in the striking surrounds of PS Art Space in Walyalup/Fremantle. Curated by composer and improvising musician Josten Myburgh\, Kinds of Light celebrates ambitious experimentation\, careful musicianship\, and sounds that are relevant to this place and time. It is programmed across style and genre\, excited by the love and rigour that goes into music that defies categories. \nThe final Kinds of Light for 2023 takes place on November 2 with doors and a bar opening at 7:30pm\, followed by the music starting shortly after. The concert features songs by AA Matheson and experimental improvisations by Land’s Air\, linked by their slow-burn pace and an utmost care for tiny nuances in sound. \nHeartbreaking and slower-than-slow\, AA Matheson’s songs burn beautifully with struggle and grief\, often unfolding so gradually that every note feels radically important. Whilst most easily categorised as alt-country\, influences to her songwriting seep in from field recordings\, ambient music\, and the minimalist end of experimental composition. The result is truly unique and personal. Her debut record “Trying” folds multiple spaces and times together\, recorded in multiple locations and conjuring images of the wheatbelt\, the Californian desert\, and the cold eucalypt forests of Victoria. \nhttps://marfalightsrecords.bandcamp.com/album/trying \nLand’s Air is made up of prolific experimental musician and organiser Eduardo Cossio\, and Kinds of Light curator Josten Myburgh. Playing completely improvised concerts with an unusual combination of alto saxophone\, amplified zithers\, cassette tapes and effects pedals\, the sound world their music creates is vivid and distinct. Their debut release on Tone List explored haunting microtonal melodies over endless\, ringing drones\, sounding like music for an otherworldly liturgy. Recently returned from a 15-show tour of Europe\, their sound has arrived at new places marked by gradual pace and a striving to combine the diverse sounds they make into one totality. \nhttps://tonelist.bandcamp.com/album/lands-air \nEach artist will present a performance of 30-40 minutes duration\, with a break in-between. \nAccessibility: This event will be held upstairs at PS due to the usual ground floor space being unavailable. This floor can only be accessed by two flights of stairs and as such is not wheelchair accessible. Gender-neutral and accessible bathrooms are located down the stairs on the ground floor. There is ample seating available and the venue is very spacious. DESCRIPTION:On Listening\nWorkshop: October 29\, 10am-1pm at Goolugatup Heathcote’s Mandoon Hall\nPay-what-you-can entry (suggested $10-$20)\, registrations essential \nPresented by internationally renowned experimental musician Jason Kahn (Zurich)\, visiting with the support of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. \nThe workshop On Listening investigates the activity of listening in the context of an artistic practice. Active listening\, as in the sense of a listening intervention\, is something that each of us can do without any special training or skills\, but which many of us might not have thought of doing before. Much has been made of the art of field recording\, but what if we put away the microphones and sound recorders and just tried to focus on the essence of a particular place through concentrated listening? \nThe workshop runs for around three hours\, depending on the number of participants. After a brief introduction from each of the participants and myself about our practice\, we move outside to spend around one hour listening at a particular place. This does not involve the use of sound recorders\, taking notes or using a mobile phone. People are just meant to sit and listen and reflect on what listening means\, what the sounds they are hearing produce in terms of how they perceive the space around them\, both as a physical as well as social entity. After the listening session we will spend the final hour of the workshop discussing our experiences. \nThe workshop is not geared towards producing any answers or finished products\, but to open up a discussion about what it means to listen to our environments as a creative practice. It is open to anyone who is interested in listening. His idiosyncratic approach to modular synthesis involves directly touching the instrument’s patch cables to use his body to complete circuits\, and overdriving the instrument with feedback and input from contact microphones and electromagnetic pickups. Wild and outta control yet with a focus and presence that comes only from great experience.\n\nLaura Altman\, our artist in residence visiting from Sydney\, plays a fascinating and delicate setup using clarinet in tandem with gentle feedback between cassette players\, resonating chambers and small speakers. She delicately blends the sound of the clarinet and the electronic sounds\, making them almost indistinguishable. She joins local exploratory vocalist Sage Pbbbt\, a long-running but infrequent collaborator of hers\, for a duo set of detailed\, subtle sounds.\n\nNaarm-based instrument builder Dale Gorfinkel’s new solo project “Headbanging” involves the use of drums from as many as four drum kits alongside numerous auxillary percussion instruments\, all played by one musician using more than ten mallets simultaneously with the aid of a custom-made helmet. Outrageous\, hilarious and brilliant.\n\nWE1 XAM – Jaslyn Robertson & Darlene Aaron from Naarm – play idiosyncratic drone meltdowns using multiple layers of analogue and FM synthesis. DESCRIPTION:For their SEF workshop this month\, Lyndon Blue invites you to share in a spirit of playfulness and genre-anarchy at Sullivan Hall. The afternoon will feature a revival of Lyndon’s 2016 ensemble experiment ‘Red Hot Go’ – in which participants are required to attempt specific ideas on wholly unfamiliar instruments – as well as exploration into “game pieces\,” and the strange art of improvising songs. \nLyndon Blue is a musician from Boorloo/Perth with a focus on composition and recording\, and an instrumental background in violin and double bass. They have performed and released music locally and internationally\, under their own name and guises such as Leafy Suburbs\, Solar Barge\, and Heathcote Blue. Lyndon’s musical output appears in past\, present and intermittent collaborations including Spice World\, Methyl Ethel\, Seams\, Spirit Level\, Vanishing Island Group\, Moses & Blue and many more. Though their main interest lies in the construction and deconstruction of song-forms\, Lyndon has been a regular improviser in Boorloo and Naarm and composed for theatre\, dance\, film\, and installation works. Newly-formed duo Panamuna Triangle play a hypnotic\, free-form take on post-punk\, inspired by noise music and ambient jazz alike. DESCRIPTION:Discover new sounds you can make yourself at this workshop by Tone List\nAbout the Event\nJoin Mandurah Sound Art Showcase curator and saxophonist Josten Myburgh for a workshop on improvising with sound. Learn skills to discover new sounds\, exploring instruments\, electronics\, and objects not typically thought of as instruments. As a group\, participants will learn to play together\, discovering new ways of making music collectively. \nAll ages and levels of experience welcome. DESCRIPTION:Come on October 9\, 6pm for the improvised trio of Pedro Alvarez (quenas)\, Djuna Lee (double bass) and Josten Myburgh (alto saxophone)\, and dinner in the garden together. \nPedro Alvarez holds a doctorate in music composition\, and recently pivoted from writing elaborate and considered notated compositions to focussing on instrument-building and applying his rigorous formal strategies to improvising on self-made quenas. It’s amazing. Djuna Lee is the expert of subtle\, sustained bowed harmonics and punchy\, groove-based avant-jazz riffs alike\, known for her work in jalan jalan\, Rif Mountain and Pale Ribbons Tossed Into the Dark. Josten Myburgh is the host of Malleefowl and plays saxophone in a variety of experimental settings. \nThey have never played a trio before. Let’s all hear it for the first time together. \nAs always there will be dinner to share. It will probably be something needlessly elaborate. It will be vegetarian and will accommodate everyone’s dietary needs. The bathroom is not wheelchair accessible (the entranceway is narrow\, and around a bend). Happy to assist with access if needed but the bathroom situation sucks. Otherwise: the vibe will be pretty relaxed\, you can check out in the garden if you need to take a break\, there’s multiple seating options\, the music will be relatively quiet (acoustic\, unamplified)\, there are usually quite a lot of people in a relatively small space.

DESCRIPTION:A bi-monthly series for improvised music and avant-garde jazz\, TuneNoiseTune celebrates leading artists in exploratory music in Western Australia\, and new collaborations between jazz and experimental musicians. The series is co-curated by Perth Jazz Society and Tone List. \nNine concerts in\, we host two duo collaborations with long histories of working together across different projects.\nTrumpeter Harry Josland & composer\, bass player & electronic musician Joshua Cusack form a duo whose previous explorations have involved interpretations of Luigi Serafini’s Codex Seraphinianus\, and spontaneous\, acoustic improvisations. With Harry’s trumpet playing at the fore\, here Joshua puts aside the bass in order to explore integrating his recent forays into electronic music production\, extending on the hints of digital synthesis that crept their way into his PJS-funded recording project Playing Well With Others. \nhttps://joshuacusack.bandcamp.com/album/tales-from-the-codex \nCommitted young improviser Saskia Willinge plays a rare microtonal Kingma-system flute\, exploring a full-spectrum sound language by playing and singing into the instrument simultaneously. Sage Pbbbt’s deep investigation into virtuosic vocal improvisation\, throat singing and otherworldly sounds has made her one of Western Australia’s most beloved live acts in the local experimental music scene. Their duo makes a web of sounds which slip and slide between rich\, vocalised sonorities and strange\, uncanny whispers. \nBio \n\n \nIncidentally\, this duo collaboration comes after Saskia’s return from the Australian Art Orchestra Creative Music Intensive\, and a performance at the world-famous Make It Up Club. We’re excited to see what she’s learned. \n–\nPlease note that the ticket pricings are “pay-what-you-can”: each ticket offers the same access to the event\, with the money going to support future projects. The four5nine website offers three price options ($30/$20/$10); flexible pricing is available for walk-ins. Please contact us if you’d like to reserve a free ticket for reasons of financial hardship\, if you are a First Nations person\, or if you are a carer for a person with a disability who will be attending. \nAccessibility: The four5nine is not easily accessible by wheelchair. Wheelchair users can access the space via the entrance off 459 Fitzgerald St\, which has one short step. An all-gender wheelchair accessible bathroom is available in the courtyard of the Rosemount Hotel.
