SUMMARY:Stations of Light performance program - Lana Rothnie / Sage Pbbbt & Eduardo Cossio
DESCRIPTION:‘Stations of Light’ is the new exhibition by musician and photographer Eduardo Cossio. The newly developed work presents a series of abstract images exploring light in sculptural ways. Photograms\, re-projections\, and paper sculptures are used to articulate a space for contemplation. \nWith an emphasis on photographic process\, the collection treats light as both medium and subject. Light’s ephemeral quality is explored through sequences and sculptural arrangements that evoke a place for worship\, but also hint at the origins of photography; to what William Henry Fox Talbot (1800–1877) called ‘the art of fixing shadows’. \nThe exhibition includes one of Cossio’s Photo Scores projected in the gallery. The animated video projection re-interprets his own photographs through visual and musical tropes such as concrete art\, collage techniques\, and indeterminacy. Eduardo will offer live realizations of his Photo Scores with the help of musical collaborators. \n\n\nBIO\nEduardo Cossio is a Peruvian-Australian musician and photographer. He is known for his novel approach to acoustic instruments with the use of non-standard techniques and electronics. Echoing his music practice\, Eduardo’s images move between the recognized and the defamiliarized; adopting shifting sightlines to explore texture\, surface\, light\, and subject matter usually considered peripheral. \nHis debut exhibition ‘Transports’ was shown at Spectrum Project Space in March of 2024. His photography has been acquired by the State Library of WA and featured at the CLIP Awards in 2022 and 2024. It is hosted within Josten Myburgh’s residency in the Goolugatup Heathcote Project Space\, wherein they are exploring these techniques in their own work with international mentors. Each week\, we’ll read an assigned text and then focus on playing and listening together. The focus will always be on accessing the sensory experience the tunings offer\, with the theory as a tool to support this. \n\n\nRI is based off of tuning frequencies to whole number ratios of each other*. The waveforms of RI intervals vibrate more periodically together than those between notes of the normal Western 12-tone equal tempered scale\, and tend to sound “fused” when played together. Being in tune in 12-tone equal temperament can sometimes feel arbitrary\, whereas tuning in RI is grounded very deeply in finely-tuned listening to distinct phenomena. Both systems have unique qualities and advantages\, but playing in RI offers a chance to connect intimately with vibration in a way that can open many new possibilities for listening and creating. \n\n\nRational Playtime is less of a workshop and more of a chance to meet other people interested in the aesthetic consequences and possibilities of RI. SUMMARY:Sound Exploration Fremantle - Pedro Alvarez
DESCRIPTION:Pedro Alvarez is an independent composer\, performer\, improviser and activist born in Chile in 1980\, and currently based on Whadjuk Noongar land in Western Australia. His musical practice spans from Andean folk traditions through chamber music to experimental free improvisation\, informed by anti-colonial perspectives\, critical theory\, and poetry. \nBetween 2010-2014\, a doctoral scholarship allowed Alvarez to concentrate exclusively on his creative work while living in the UK\, completing a Master of Philosophy at University of London\, and a PhD guided by Liza Lim at University of Huddersfield. Later professional highlights include being appointed composer-in-residence in Vienna and in Mexico\, serving as a peer in various Australia Council funding panels\, lecturing in music at several universities in Chile and Australia\, and receiving commissions from festivals and ensembles around the world. In addition to his musical practice\, Alvarez currently works in community mental health for a non-for-profit organisation in Perth. SUMMARY:Audible Edge Night School: What was that all about?
DESCRIPTION:The curators of Audible Edge\, Annika Moses & Josten Myburgh\, invite you for a reflective discussion on the festival. Why was Audible Edge the way it was? What challenges were faced in pulling it together? How did it actually go? What was good about it? What didn’t work? \nThis debrief serves an important function for Tone List to reflect on how public money is put to use in service of our program. This is both ethical\, and mandatory for our funding evaluations. But it’s also a way of inviting the public to join in that process and shape the festival into the future. It’s a space for you to support the festival with your perspective and ideas\, and also to critique or challenge its curatorial perspectives. \n\nAccessibility\n\nThe State Library of Western Australia Geographe Room is a wheelchair accessible venue. It is located on the ground floor. There are numerous wheelchair accessible\, all-gender bathrooms located throughout the library. The event is alcohol-free and all-ages. The room will be brightly and clearly lit. Live captioning can be arranged for the session. The venue is enclosed with no windows. It will not be overcrowded\, but depending on in-person attendance numbers\, it may not have spare for more than 1.5m physical distancing.

SUMMARY:Ocean\, Again: Iran Sanadzadeh
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne-based composer\, performer and researcher Iran Sanadzadeh presents electronic music from her debut album Ocean\, Again\, performed on terpsichora floors. This electronic instrument – a set of pressure-sensitive wooden platforms with sensors controlled by whole-body movement – follows on from the work of pioneering Australian dancer Philippa Cullen. Sanadzadeh’s interactive performance is a deeply innovative exploration of the relationship between movement and sound.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge '24: I make big noise and make small sound\, I am in the air and on the ground\, I'm out of sight and can be found. What am I?
DESCRIPTION:The last hurrah of Audible Edge! \nI make big noise … is a relaxed late arvo concert celebrating the close of the festival. Expansive sound collage\, poetic reflections\, and nuanced folk provide a soft final landing place for those at the end of a big festival weekend; or a perfect Sunday outing for homebodies! This all-ages\, families-welcome gig is set up with catering by Teeter and Manna\, interactive activities\, outdoor space and room to stretch out\, and no alcohol (but cups of tea and yummy drinks by Strangelove). \nThis concert is also an album launch for Tone List’s 40th release by Jenny Hickinbotham. Jenny’s songs and poetry are cheeky and singular. They are joyous creative outbursts that often reflect her day-to-day life\, idiosyncratic worldly observations\, and her lived experience of hearing voices. Jenny will perform live in collaboration with local enigmas Chris Cobilis and Lana Rothnie. As a never-before-heard trio they are bound to cause a ruckus in the best way. \nComposer Simon Charles and John Kinsella\, one of this continent’s foremost poets\, debut a new collaboration. Using field recordings\, analogue tape\, musical notation and poetry\, Simon and John have made tender traces of the suspension bridge in York\, on Ballardong boodja. Their work attends to the bridge and how it relates to its surroundings\, unravelling multiple meanings and connections. The piece will be performed by the two artists accompanied by long-time collaborators Jameson Feakes\, Rebecca Lane & Jon Heilbron. \nAt the top of the show is the debut of tenforward\, the duo of Lyndon Blue (Heathcote Blue\, Leafy Suburbs) and Jessyca Hutchens (Jane Harris). Both wordsmiths\, folk stars and gentle weirdos in their own right\, their two unique sensibilities combine to make tender-hearted ditties. \nGood vibes supplied in-between sets by DJ Ayo Busari\, who plays tunes from the orbit of dancehall\, house\, hip-hop\, RnB and Afro remix culture\, augmented with live percussion. \nAt any point during the gig\, get stuck into Emilie Monty’s Sonic Scavenger Hunt\, from which this gig takes its name. This is a self-directed activity set amongst the eucalyptus\, galahs and red bricks surrounding Sullivan Hall\, for kids of all ages. Put on your thinking hats\, silly hats and sun smart hats and join in to discover and delight in hidden treats. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nThe Sullivan Hall is a wheelchair accessible venue\, accessible via the footpath on inclined but smooth terrain. The music will mostly be at a comfortable volume but may occasionally be very quiet or a little loud. It will be well-lit with natural light. The event is alcohol-free and all ages. There will be free food available including gluten-free and vegan options\, and non-alcoholic drinks for sale. There are two accessible all-gender bathrooms located outside the venue\, connected via a footpath. The venue is spacious and windows and doors can be kept open throughout most of the performances for the duration. Some of the quieter performances will involve the doors and windows being closed\, and then re-opened after the performance. There is no dedicated indoor check-out space\, but you can go outside into the garden\, or even across the road into the park. Emilie Monty’s work gives the opportunity to check out and do a focussed listening activity by yourself or with a few friends whenever you feel like it.
