Matt Jones & Lindsay Vickery create feedback networks on theorbo, bass clarinet and Pure Data programming; composer-performers Pedro Alvarez & Josten Myburgh explore complex timbres in space using the quena and alto saxophone respectively; and dance ensemble PiP Collective query social processes.
This workshop invites collective thinking by doing, asking what it means to have a voice and a body and to use both in a group improvised setting. It is also an opportunity to think about hope, faith and congregation of a different kind; practicing group singing in a non-denominational context. You do not need to have any prior vocal training or experience in improvising — all levels of experience and vocal proficiency are welcome and encouraged. Workshops directed by Annika Moses. A recital by two young saxophonists united by a shared interest in improvisation and experimental practice on their instruments. Each artist will perform an ambitious solo work, and perform a duo improvisation together. Saccades by Ted Moore is an electro-acoustic solo work using feedback processes and neural networks to emulate the process of saccadic masking in human vision. Saturated, layered and stimulating, it includes striking interplay between acoustic and electronic sound, and elaborate, contemporary processes for generating electro-acoustic sound textures. As part of a three-week residency at PICA, Joshua Pether, Janine Oxenham and Helah Milroy revisit their durational performance ritual The Reckoning, created in 2021 through a creative development at PICA. The first performance outcome was a seven-hour performance ritual that utilised First Nations wisdom and knowledge whilst also taking inspiration from Butoh, a form of Japanese dance theatre developed in response to the trauma of the bombing of Hiroshima. The development involved the performers ‘reckoning’ with themselves and geographical sites of significance to First Nations people. Ghost Tunes is a collaborative arts project created by sound artists and writers from Australia and Scotland, exploring language, landscape and culture. Currently part of the Fremantle Arts Centre residency program, Ghost Tunes artists include Cass Lynch (Boorloo/Perth), Mei Swan Lim, Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey (Naarm/Melbourne), Theresa Sainty (Lutruwita/Tasmania), Cass Ezeji (Scotland), Quinie (Scotland), in collaboration with Counterflows – an internationally acclaimed Glasgow-based contemporary music festival.
