Entry is either via three flights of stairs (the front door)\, a very steep driveway to the right of the house followed by a single step to enter the house\, or a single flight of steps followed by a single step to enter the house on the right side. The bathroom is not wheelchair accessible (the entranceway is narrow\, and around a bend). Happy to assist with access if needed but the bathroom situation sucks. Otherwise: the vibe will be pretty relaxed\, you can check out in the garden if you need to take a break\, there’s multiple seating options\, the music will be relatively quiet (acoustic\, unamplified)\, there are usually about 15-20 people in a relatively small space.

SUMMARY:Stations of Light performance program - Naoko Uemoto / Eduardo Cossio & Simon Charles
DESCRIPTION:‘Stations of Light’ is the new exhibition by musician and photographer Eduardo Cossio. The newly developed work presents a series of abstract images exploring light in sculptural ways. Photograms\, re-projections\, and paper sculptures are used to articulate a space for contemplation. \nWith an emphasis on photographic process\, the collection treats light as both medium and subject. Light’s ephemeral quality is explored through sequences and sculptural arrangements that evoke a place for worship\, but also hint at the origins of photography; to what William Henry Fox Talbot (1800–1877) called ‘the art of fixing shadows’. \nThe exhibition includes one of Cossio’s Photo Scores projected in the gallery. The animated video projection re-interprets his own photographs through visual and musical tropes such as concrete art\, collage techniques\, and indeterminacy. Eduardo will offer live realizations of his Photo Scores with the help of musical collaborators. \n\n\nBIO\nEduardo Cossio is a Peruvian-Australian musician and photographer. He is known for his novel approach to acoustic instruments with the use of non-standard techniques and electronics. Echoing his music practice\, Eduardo’s images move between the recognized and the defamiliarized; adopting shifting sightlines to explore texture\, surface\, light\, and subject matter usually considered peripheral. \nHis debut exhibition ‘Transports’ was shown at Spectrum Project Space in March of 2024. His photography has been acquired by the State Library of WA and featured at the CLIP Awards in 2022 and 2024. SUMMARY:Josten Myburgh - Goolugatup Residency Showing
DESCRIPTION:Josten Myburgh \n24 June – 21 July 2024 \n\n\nJosten Myburgh’s residency involves the development of a concert-length electro-acoustic work for solo alto saxophone\, projected through a triangle of speakers with Josten in the middle. \n  \nThe work centres a technique Josten has been developing combining non-standard tunings and electronic processing on the instrument. They will be using the residency to develop this technique in detail\, looking for unusual combinations of frequencies which produce psychoacoustic phenomena\, such as surprisingly loud sub-bass tones and rhythmic pulsations. Their focus is on a tender\, embodied relationship to composing and playing\, that comes out of a curious and idiosyncratic approach to their instrument and how its sound resonates in space and perception. \n  \nJosten will be working on the project with the assistance of mentors Rebecca Lane\, James Rushford\, Erin Royer and Patrick Gunasekera\, and lighting designer Adelaide Harney. \n  \nThis project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Music Australia and Creative Australia\, its principal arts investment and advisory body. \n‍ \nFlyer by Lyndon Blue.

DESCRIPTION:Dates:\nJune 29\, 1pm\nJuly 4\, 6pm\nJuly 13\, 1pm \nRegister:\njostenmyburgh@protonmail.com \nRational Playtime is a weekly session to learn about and play in the tuning system known as rational intonation (RI\, also called extended just intonation\, EJI or just JI). It is hosted within Josten Myburgh’s residency in the Goolugatup Heathcote Project Space\, wherein they are exploring these techniques in their own work with international mentors. Each week\, we’ll read an assigned text and then focus on playing and listening together. The focus will always be on accessing the sensory experience the tunings offer\, with the theory as a tool to support this. \n\n\nRI is based off of tuning frequencies to whole number ratios of each other*. The waveforms of RI intervals vibrate more periodically together than those between notes of the normal Western 12-tone equal tempered scale\, and tend to sound “fused” when played together. Being in tune in 12-tone equal temperament can sometimes feel arbitrary\, whereas tuning in RI is grounded very deeply in finely-tuned listening to distinct phenomena. Both systems have unique qualities and advantages\, but playing in RI offers a chance to connect intimately with vibration in a way that can open many new possibilities for listening and creating. \n\n\nRational Playtime is less of a workshop and more of a chance to meet other people interested in the aesthetic consequences and possibilities of RI. The session is grounded in experimental sound practice\, but anyone interested may attend\, including players active in early music and non-Western musics which use rational or just tunings. \n\n\n*this reference to rational numbers is what’s meant by the term rational – it doesn’t refer to being somehow reasonable or logical (or elitist)! \nImage courtesy of Catherine Lamb & Sacred Realism.

Being in tune in 12-tone equal temperament can sometimes feel arbitrary\, whereas tuning in RI is grounded very deeply in finely-tuned listening to distinct phenomena. Trained as a composer\, Moses’ work spans a range of methodologies and artistic formats. His trombone playing reflects a multi-instrumental background\, channelling insights from a range of wind-instrument disciplines. Claire and Moses have often performed together as members of the Resonant Fields ensemble.

SUMMARY:Sound Exploration Fremantle - Pedro Alvarez
DESCRIPTION:Pedro Alvarez is an independent composer\, performer\, improviser and activist born in Chile in 1980\, and currently based on Whadjuk Noongar land in Western Australia. His musical practice spans from Andean folk traditions through chamber music to experimental free improvisation\, informed by anti-colonial perspectives\, critical theory\, and poetry. \nBetween 2010-2014\, a doctoral scholarship allowed Alvarez to concentrate exclusively on his creative work while living in the UK\, completing a Master of Philosophy at University of London\, and a PhD guided by Liza Lim at University of Huddersfield. Later professional highlights include being appointed composer-in-residence in Vienna and in Mexico\, serving as a peer in various Australia Council funding panels\, lecturing in music at several universities in Chile and Australia\, and receiving commissions from festivals and ensembles around the world. In addition to his musical practice\, Alvarez currently works in community mental health for a non-for-profit organisation in Perth. SUMMARY:A visual and sonic exploration of the Decibel new music ensemble’s Complete John Cage Variations’ Project.
DESCRIPTION:In 2012\, Decibel new music ensemble devised ‘The Complete John Cage Variations Project’\, an hour-long performance program featuring the eight Variations compositions (1958-76) composed by the important twentieth century composer John Cage (USA\, 1912 -92). \nThis exhibition displays some of the computer-generated scores and sound making objects devised for this project. It aligns with the release of a book edited by Decibel members Cat Hope and Lindsay Vickery\, entitled Actions|Remarks: John Cage’s Variations and the expansion of the score\, sonic materials\, space\, and the environment which includes a CD recording of the Decibel Complete Variations Project on US Label Mode. \nOpening night features a performance by Decibel.\nExhibition runs until 19 July. \nCurated by Cat Hope with the Decibel new music ensemble. \nMore information here

DESCRIPTION:Set your alarm clock for a meditative sunrise listening session with Lily Tait (Naarm).\nIn partnership with Tone List\, Boola Bardip presents an experimental concert series set against the backdrop of the sunrise\, perched in the highest reaches of our eastern terrace. \nWe invite you to start your day early\, sit with a coffee and take a moment to reflect in peace while watching Boorloo’s east metropolitan area light up from the base of the hills to the steps of the Museum\, scored by special guest\, Lily Tait. \nLevel 3 terrace nook (indoors\, warm and undercover) transforms into a serene performance space for the artist to take you on a journey over one and a half hours of sunrise. \n\nLily Tait’s music comprises an exploratory approach to violin and vocal techniques\, focusing on how they can move together to embody one indeterminate\, almost inscrutable sound source. This practice\, combined with fixed track collaging\, forms fabled ecosystems influenced by the patterns and textures of acoustic ecology; inviting contributions from chanced upon objects\, bioacoustic GPS and found sounds.
