DESCRIPTION:As part of my* residency at Nanulgarup/gallop house\, I will be hosting four gatherings at the house to eat and drink together\, and listen to some music by outstanding local independent musicians. Each event will make use of the house’s baby grand piano. \nThe ticket price includes drinks and ambitious home-cooked food (afternoon tea for the 3pm events\, and dinner for the 6pm ones). DESCRIPTION:Following their open studio and artist talk\, Jimi DePriest will present a Sunday afternoon workshop on SuperCollider—an open-source software environment and dynamic programming language used by musicians\, artists\, and researchers working with sound for audio synthesis and algorithmic composition. \nThe 3-hour workshop is intended to provide participants with an introduction to the audio program ahead of producing a practical outcome. The first hour will consist of an overview of SuperCollider\, while the second hour will see participants develop their own projects to be tested on a 5-channel stereo system in the third hour. \nPlease note: \nRegistered participants will need to bring a laptop with SuperCollider pre-installed to the workshop\, along with a laptop charger. The software is free\, and download/install instructions will be emailed in advance of the course. \nWhile the workshop doesn’t require prior experience with SuperCollider\, we suggest that participants have a competent understanding of their laptop and its OS\, as well as a basic knowledge of acoustics and digital audio.

DESCRIPTION:Concluding the first of four residencies in our 2026–27 Residency Program\, Cool Change is excited to present an open studio with Jimi DePriest\, featuring an artist talk facilitated by Samuel Beilby—artist\, occasional musician\, and co-founder/co-director of _____g.s (aka Underscore Gallery & Studios). \nWith assistance from Matthew Taggart and conceptual input from Lia T\, Jimi has been developing an audiovisual installation inspired by ‘clutter rejection’—an adaptive method observed in echolocating bats—for presentation at _____g.s later in the year. \nA wire framework\, abstractly modelled on the anatomical features of bats\, will suspend a 5-channel stereo system attached to a motor and including an interactive system with conductive textile components and input sensors. Field recordings and gritty beats will be controlled by the system and its various inputs through SuperCollider. \nFrom its hardware and software to its audio components\, the work considers the bat’s ambiguous subjectivity in an attempt to approximate environmental feedback between its natural sonic world and anthropogenic noise pollution\, problematising and reconfiguring echolocation as a site of artistic inspiration and technological invention. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is proudly supported by the WA Government. \nCool Change is supported by the Visual Art\, Craft and Design Framework\, an initiative of the Australian\, State and Territory Governments.

SUMMARY:Lydia Lunch performs the songs of Suicide & Alan Vega
DESCRIPTION:New York – No Wave Queen\, Lydia Lunch – returns to Australia to perform the songs of synth – punk band\, Suicide and Alan Vega. \nLydia will be joined on stage by Andrew Coates of much loved Melbourne electro trio\, Black Cab to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Alan Vega’s passing + special guests. \nLunch originally met Suicide – the duo of late vocalist Alan Vega and multi-instrumentalist Martin Rev – in the 1970s\, when Lunch moved to New York City from Rochester as a teenager. She formed a lifelong bond with the pair\, often joining them on-stage to perform the song ‘Frankie Teardrop’ and recording a duet as part of Vega’s solo album Sniper. Since Vega’s passing in 2016\, Lunch has performed several Suicide tribute shows\, most often with Marc Hurtado. \nHaving previously never performed the show in Australia\, Lydia surprised fans on a night off in Melbourne during her 2024 Spoken Word tour with an impromptu appearance at the Tote. It sold out in 3 days so she decided to bring it back for Vega’s anniversary in 2026. \nPassionate\, sexual\, confrontational and bold\, Lunch\, Vega and Rev are all cut from the same grimy cloth of 1970s New York. This show is more than a tribute. It’s an offering.

DESCRIPTION:Oren Ambarchi is an Australian multi-instrumentalist based in Berlin whose practice focuses on the exploration of the guitar. He is a prolific solo artist and consummate collaborator who has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists over the last three decades including; Fennesz\, Charlemagne Palestine\, Sunn 0))\, crys cole\, Thomas Brinkmann\, Keiji Haino\, Alvin Lucier\, John Zorn\, Annea Lockwood\, Alvin Curran\, Loren Connors\, Manuel Gottsching/Ash Ra\, Merzbow\, Jim O’Rourke\, Keith Rowe\, David Rosenboom\, Akio Suzuki\, Phill Niblock\, John Tilbury\, Richard Pinhas\, Evan Parker\, Fire! and many more. He has released numerous recordings over the years for labels such as Touch\, Editions Mego\, Drag City\, PAN\, Kranky\, Staubgold and Tzadik. Since 2009 Ambarchi has run the Black Truffle record label. Ambarchi’s latest album (together with Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin) is Ghosted III released via US label Drag City. \nJoined by Pale Ribbons Tossed Into The Dark. This event is proudly co-presented by Tone List\,  a Boorloo-based label for exploratory music. Tone List’s operations are supported by the WA government.

It includes delightfully strange songs\, forward-thinking club sets\, brazenly weird experiments\, bracing noise\, virtuosic improvisation\, anti-virtuosic improvisation\, listening through dancing\, new directions for ancient music\, dinners\, treats and strolls. \nOur mission is to make a low pressure\, fun atmosphere\, and a powerful\, attentive listening culture. We carefully curate a program of stuff that is really good\, putting little-known experimentalists on a prominent stage. We invite you to experience a festival with no headliners\, that is more about realness\, kindness and building culture together. \nIn a radical and unprecedented turn (🤪)\, AE’26 is all in one venue: Victoria Hall in Walyalup. We’re taking over the whole space\, with room for impromptu participatory play\, resting or dining between sets\, courtyard boogies or massive sets in the main hall. If AE has a theme this year it is “ease”: the festival is still Quite The Journey\, but everything you need is close to hand. \n  \nProgram & Lineup\n  \nSo far we have announced only our four Seed Fund artists: amby downs (Naarm)\, Simon Charles & John Kinsella\, Lia T & R. Glacken\, and Saskia Willinge with Uma Volkmer (Warrang) & Naoko Uemoto. Donate to support new work by these artists now via the Australian Cultural Fund – all donations above $2 are tax deductible. \n  \nThe full program will go live at 6PM AWST on April 9\, 2026. Come to the Program Launch event at Patio. \n  \nAccessibility\n\nVictoria Hall is an 8 minute walk from Fremantle Station (about 550m) over footpaths and paved roads. 915 and 502 bus routes stop immediately outside the venue.\nVictoria Hall is wheelchair accessible. Some steps separate the bar from the outdoor courtyard\, however there is an alternative accessible pathway around the other side of the main hall. We’re currently looking into a ramp for these steps.\nThe music in the festival is extremely diverse\, ranging from extremely quiet\, minimal music to loud\, repetitive and rhythmic music\, noise and drone. Each set is succinctly described in the program to help you decide whether something is for you.\nLighting is a mixture of natural light and warm\, ambient light. No lights flashing faster than 5Hz\, projections\, or strobe lights are used in the festival.\nThere is a dedicated quiet\, low-stim space in the venue. There are also indoor and outdoor social spaces which can be used for a rest between or during sets.\nSnacks are available during morning programs\, and dinner is available for purchase inside the venue in the evenings. Lunch is best found by going for a short stroll\, there’s plenty close by in Fremantle.\nWe have a small accessibility budget set aside for any attendees who need financial assistance in order to attend. That could be to pay a support person to come with you\, or to get an uber to and from the venue door. DESCRIPTION:A site-specific sound installation in which the Naval Store becomes a living organ. Acoustic feedback loops are generated and modulated by interconnected systems: real-time Fremantle weather data — wind speed\, humidity\, temperature and atmospheric pressure — flocking algorithms that govern the collective behaviour of sound across space\, and the resonant frequencies of the microphones and the building itself. \nFound objects suspended from the ceiling trusses act as speaker units\, connected by cables radiating from a central control system. A producer and DJ lauded by Boomkat as “one of the underground’s key\, if liminal\, hyper-connectors\,” he runs the label and event series FELT\, which has released records by the likes of Civilistjävel! & Carrier. \nPreviously known as Perko\, Jones released his acclaimed debut album Ephemera on Numbers in 2024. Developed with collaborative energy as the creative priority\, the album was produced by Jones alongside an extensive list of like-minded musicians\, lyricists and vocalists\, including Huerco S\, James K\, Koreless\, Birthmark\, ELDON and Withdrawn of Bristol’s Cold Light crew\, Laila Sakini and Lia T. Ephemera featured on numerous Best of 2024 lists by publications such as The Quietus\, Phonica\, Gorilla vs. Bear\, and First Floor\, with Pitchfork columnist Philip Sherburne highlighting “Heima” as the year’s best trip-hop single and Resident Advisor recommending its “masterful storm of trip-hop\, dub and downtempo.” \nEphemera followed three releases on Numbers under the Perko alias – 2018’s NV Auto\, 2020’s The City Rings\, and 2023’s Prang\, which was included on Resident Advisor’s Best Tracks of 2023 – and 2020’s Galerie on Denmark’s Posh Isolation. \nPraised for his productions\, live performances\, and DJ sets\, Jones has notably contributed mixes to the long-running FACT and Truants series\, and is a frequent guest on radio stations such as NTS\, Rinse\, and the Lot. DESCRIPTION:Sophia performs live at Rosemount Hotel on Friday February 20\, joined by supports Ben Buchanan and Nika Mo. This rare\, intimate seated performance offers a close-up experience of her music and is not to be missed.\nSophia Hansen-Knarhoi is a detail focused experimental ambient-folk songwriter\, combining expansive evocative sound worlds with intimate storytelling. \nWith her first album Undertow\, London-based composer/singer-songwriter Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi reveals stark vulnerability nestled in a dark ambience that is both intimate and expansive. Voice and cello provide the bedrock of a detail focused record\, that threads together memory\, grief\, growth and connection. Undertow took its shape during an acclimation of sensuality and self\, through a period of processing trauma\, and all of life\, love and loss that it surrounds and intertwines with. ‘Undertow’ binds this intimacy with the corporeal\, spanning violation and deep trust. It deals with the fallout of the victims of violence against women\, voyaging through fear and pain to absolution. \n“The cello is widely considered the closest instrument to the voice. This is something that continually bleeds into my practice\, finding the connection between voice\, cello and body. The physicalization of this combined practice creates a sense of corporeality in my sound. I let it be intuitive\, my playing and singing guided by my breath and the way my body moves. I found the duality of this expression informed reflections of sensuality and intimacy throughout the album.” \nUndertow coalesces in a unique combination of clarity in its folk/singer-songwriter storytelling with a wholly alive and reactive bed of instrumentation. Instead of traditional structures and overly virtuosic solos\, all aspects of production and performance lean heavily into spontaneity and gut feeling\, reaching closer to a sense of unfiltered emotional truth. The result is an act of reification: songs with a sense of touch\, of ears and eyes and flesh\, coming to life around the mouth. \nWith the skilled Brooklyn producer Randall Dunn as a collaborator\, Undertow pushes further into the abstract\, a dark and dissociative space. Dunn carves intricate space with vast void-like atmospheres and cinematic intensity\, with an unrelenting foregrounding of vulnerability. With instrumentalists Peter Zummo\, Marilu Donovan\, Henry Fraser\, Luke Bergman and Brent Arnold\, the arrangements on Undertow draw breath into a minimalistic sonic landscape\, occupying a cohesive improvisational latitude. \nBorn in Perth\, Hansen-Knarhoi grew up surrounded by the natural world. ‘Undertow’ draws on the stark landscapes and vast waters of Western Australia. At moments\, field recordings are woven into the work\, while at others\, arrangements reflect its beautiful barren environment through memory. “Engulfing myself in nature has always been a way for me to process the world\, to bring me back into my body and my senses”. ‘Undertow’ revels in this remote sonic landscape\, submerging stories in the depths of truth.

The program traces a line from conceptual composition to scorched-earth noise praxis to the outer edges of contemporary rap.\n\n\nFrom Yogyakarta arrives Aditya Pandu Wijaya\, a key figure in Indonesia’s noise vanguard and the force behind Bergegas Mati\, his harsh-noise vehicle known for its eroding\, heat-warped extremity. Pandu’s networked practice spans global collaborations\, split releases\, raw-collage digital art and his cassette-driven imprint Gerpfast Records\, which has quietly become a clearing house for scenes that refuse to align – shoegaze\, hardcore\, metal\, electronica and the vast detritus between. His new project\, D.O.V.E.\, pushes further into violent oscillatory abrasion\, reaffirming noise as both rupture and communion. \nCutting through these intensities is Pette Shabu\, the Quezon City rapper shaping a distinctly Southeast Asian reading of experimental hip-hop. Her work fuses boom-bap\, metal\, ballroom\, industrial and rave architectures into a kind of incendiary vernacular theatre – language as protest\, pulse and provocation. On her recent debut SPRAK\, she fractures genre into a riotous\, multilingual cipher: political\, playful\, deeply embodied. Live\, Pette operates at a threshold where club energy collides with underground poetics\, a charged presence carving out new trajectories for regional rap. \nFailing Upwards\, the ongoing alias of Chris Cobilis\, works in the long shadow of late-20th-century conceptualism\, folding film scoring\, installation and procedural performance into a practice that treats sound as both material and thought experiment. From self-duplicated record-shop replicas to the multi-device micro-drama of INSTAPHONICS\, Chris navigates the frayed interfaces between technology\, perception and non-music with a misanthropic humour that feels increasingly diagnostic. \nBen Aguero selects some recorded music on the night\, playing selections before and between performances. \nTogether\, these artists outline a terrain where form blurs\, pressure builds and sound becomes a vector for instability\, resistance and raw proposition. \nPart of Summit at Lawson Flats – an unmissable series for the curious and thoughtful.
