SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: Sound Sauna
DESCRIPTION:Sound Sauna is a one-of-a-kind sensory ritual — a resonance spa at Manjaree (Bathers Beach)\, perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean. Set within a repurposed shipping container and lined with locally sourced timber\, this installation fuses the restorative heat of traditional sauna culture with a transformative sonic experience. This intimate space invites you to sweat\, float and dissolve into a curated sonic journey. \nAcross a series of 60-minute sessions\, sound artists\, musicians\, poets\, and cultural leaders create immersive soundscapes designed to deepen connection to place. Inspired by the Fremantle Biennale’s 2025 theme of sanctuary\, each session is an exploration in active listening\, collective care and embodied transformation. Sound changes with the time of day: morning meditations and vocal landscapes drift toward late-night DJ sets and experimental bass vibrations. Your body becomes a conduit for deep frequency — buoyant\, dissolving\, alive. \nWhether you’re drawn by tradition\, curiosity or the lure of sound and heat\, Sound Sauna offers a space to reflect\, to soften and to feel\, floating between breath and rhythm. Come alone or with others. Sit\, listen\, sweat. Let the ocean hum at your back. The warmth will carry you and the sound will stay with you. \nFt. Lawrence English\, Alice Humphries & Daniel Thorne\, Aarti Jadu\, LiaT and Jade Vision + more to be announced!

SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: A Predatory Chord
DESCRIPTION:A polyphonic signal fractures and scatters throughout the space — dispersed across a suspended field of loudspeakers. Cello-like tones rise and recoil in response to an inaudible threat\, echoing the murmuration of prey animals under pressure. The room becomes an evolving environment\, a volatile ecology of pitch\, pressure\, and mass. Sometimes\, it breathes. Sometimes\, it drops into an uncanny silence. \nIn A Predatory Chord\, acclaimed composer Ben Frost pushes the very medium of his practice: the PA system. Loudspeakers — typically hidden — become spatial and sculptural instruments\, shaping sound into form. This is more than music\, this is a living intelligent system — reactive\, physical\, and unpredictable. \nOriginally commissioned for the Rolex Arts Festival\, A Predatory Chord lands at the Fremantle Biennale with its full original scale and tension. From the mind behind award-winning scores such as Dark\, Frost’s latest work continues his deep investigation into thresholds of sound\, technology\, and the unflinching wildness of the natural world. \n\n\n\nDate and Time \n13-30 Nov (Thur-Sun)\n11am-8pm \nLocation \nVictoria Hall \n\n\nEntry \n$15 + booking fee

SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: Sounds of Some Summer
DESCRIPTION:Sounds of Some Summer is a sprawling soundscape by Fremantle-based artist Bruno Booth\, turning the city itself into an instrument. Across Walyalup (Fremantle)\, five microphones are discreetly installed — tuned to the sounds of the everyday — the wind\, port\, voices\, traffic\, and silence. These live audio streams feed into a central mixing station at the installation’s “epicenter\,” where the city’s sounds\, as summer awakens\, are remixed in real time. \nSometimes quiet\, sometimes dissonant\, the soundscape is in constant flux — modulated by a rotating cast of invited “conductors and performers”\, curated by Lyndon Blue. Using distortion\, delay\, and instruments to sculpt spontaneous compositions from everyday noise\, each performer will create a layered audio experience that’s never the same twice. \nInspired by the brain’s Default Mode Network — a state of mind-wandering triggered by ambient stimuli — Booth’s installation offers a space for gentle drift\, introspection and imaginative thought. It’s a work that invites you to listen differently: to find new meaning in the familiar\, to be still inside a moving world. Bruno Booth’s innovative practice spans sculpture\, technology and participation. With Some Sounds of Some Summer\, he offers a quiet proposition: that a city might be found in its background noise.
