SUMMARY:Revivification
DESCRIPTION:Revivification is an extraordinary immersive exhibition combining sound and cutting-edge biological innovation to bring to life the musical genius of a deceased composer. \nFour years in the making\, Revivification delivers a historic first: the in-vitro (external) ‘brain’ of the late composer Alvin Lucier (1931-2021) creating a new work in real time\, as a live performance over the duration of the exhibition. \nIt is developed by artists Guy Ben-Ary\, Nathan Thompson and Matt Gingold with neuroscientist Stuart Hodgetts based at the University of Western Australia (UWA)\, who have individually spent 25 years pushing boundaries in the biological arts. \nThe physical realisation of Revivification began in 2020 when Alvin Lucier donated his blood for the project. His blood was sent to Harvard Medical School where his white blood cells were reprogrammed into stem cells – the fundamental building blocks of Revivification\, using a process called Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (IPSC) technology. Then\, the Revivification Team transformed (differentiated) Lucier’s stem cells into cerebral organoids: three-dimensional structures that resemble a developing human brain. \nAlvin Lucier stood among the giants of 20th-century experimental music. He transformed how we think about composition by shifting focus from traditional musical elements to the physical properties of sound itself. His work with brain waves\, echolocation\, and room acoustics blurred the lines between music\, science\, and art – an approach that spoke to the artists and researchers at UWA. \nAt the heart of the installation stands a sculptural object that encapsulates the incubator housing Lucier’s ‘in-vitro brain’\, living outside\, and beyond his body (the term ‘in-vitro’ comes from the Latin for ‘in glass’). \nLining the walls are 20 large\, curved brass plates that are both sculptural and the source of the immersive sound environment. Each of the plates is directly connected to the neural activity of Lucier’s brain organoid. As the ‘in-vitro brains” signals pulse through transducers and actuators\, they strike the brass\, creating complex\, sustained resonances that fill the space with sound.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a concert & hang at Astral Weeks to raise funds for the upcoming season of O\,D\,E at The Blue Room Theatre.\nO\,D\,E is an experimental opera composed and written by mainstay of the Boorloo weird music scene\, Sage J Harlow (better known as Sage Pbbbt). It combines improvised music\, trans & gender theory\, black metal\, meditation\, occultism\, magick\, and opera\, in a way only Sage could .\n\nFrom 6:30 til 10:00: A rare DJ set from Sage\, sharing earthy and magickal music from her vast collection of Siberian avant-folk\, shamanic music\, Tuvan throat singing\, and more.\n\nAt 7:30\, two experimental scores by Sage will be played by members of the opera team:\n\nfalling leaves (2023) performed by Craig Pedersen (trumpet)thirteen pages of improvisation (2017) performed by Josten Myburgh (saxophone)\n\nEntry by donation ($25/$15 suggested\, all amounts welcome)\, all proceeds to the opera\, helping us cover artist wages\, set and costume design\, and documentation.\n\nLimited edition O\,D\,E denim patches made by Bosa & Oli Rawlings for sale\, plus some other merch\, and a raffle!\n\n𝓐𝓫𝓸𝓾𝓽 𝓞\,𝓓\,𝓔\nO\,D\,E is a new experimental opera by Sage J Harlow (aka Sage Pbbbt). A queer\, occult retelling of Orpheus & Eurydice\, exploring gender and identity\, and grounded in the suffering that comes with simply being alive.\nO\,D\,E debuts as part of the 2025 Blue Room Theatre Annual Season between August 26 and September 6. It is a small\, acoustically treated space\, and often feels a bit crowded.\nThe live music will be acoustic and will have a wide dynamic range\, including loud and stimulating sections and long silences or quiet passages.\nThe room is indoors and air-conditioned and windows are kept closed\, meaning ventilation is limited. Lighting will be low and warm. There will not be a dedicated check-out or quiet space in the venue due to limited space.\nFree earplugs and N95 masks are available from the person at the door.\nFirst Nations folks\, companion card holders & Palestinian people are invited to attend for free.\n\n𝓐𝓬𝓴𝓷𝓸𝔀𝓵𝓮𝓭𝓰𝓶𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓼\nO\,D\,E is produced by Tone List\, a Boorloo-based label for exploratory music.\nThe creative development has received support from the Western Australian State Government through the Department of Local Government\, Sports and Cultural Industries\, and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.\nThe annual season of O\,D\,E is supported by The Blue Room Theatre.
