SUMMARY:Audible Edge Festival of Exploratory Music
DESCRIPTION:SAVE-THE-DATE: FULL PROGRAM TO BE ANNOUNCED MARCH 13 \nAudible Edge is a festival of exploratory music presented by Tone List. It’s geared towards exploring the marginal\, experimental\, and not-normal. It happens yearly in Boorloo and Walyalup\, on Whadjuk Noongar land. In 2024\, it begins at sunrise on April 26\, and ends at moonrise on April 28. \n  \nSince 2017\, Audible Edge has platformed exploratory music in Boorloo and strengthened the ties connecting us to the scene globally. We’ve persisted through COVID disruptions\, taking on many new shapes and forms in the process. This year\, we’re excited to return to our roots: three days of back-to-back events\, packed with great (weird) music. \n  \nAudible Edge celebrates play\, freak energy\, silliness\, ephemerality and “getting stuck into it”. We see these as meaningful ways of engaging with new experiences (it’s not all chin-scratching seriousness). We love local\, emergent\, queer and contingent projects. We love straight-faced experimentation rubbing shoulders with unhinged wildness (or when you can’t tell which is which!). We strive to make accessible contexts to appreciate all of this. We want to share the radical potency of our community\, and invite friends from distant lands and waters to be a part of it too. \n  \nOur program is full of wild and weird high-contrast bookings. Sometimes they contain contradictory approaches or unresolved tensions. We invite any and all responses to this. We find Audible Edge is best when listeners\, hosts and makers all share in the messy process of ‘making sense’. (Whatever that even means.) \n  \nAudible Edge 2024 also features a Night School: a pre-festival program of weekly workshops. The Night School explores how we might write our own stories\, build our own platforms\, and listen better. A local\, interstate or international guest facilitates each session. It runs from March 24 to April 21 (and isn’t always at night). \n  \nAudible Edge received an Art Music State Luminary Award in 2023 from APRA AMCOS and the Australian Music Centre. This recognised five years of contributions to the creative music culture of this side of the continent. It has received 4.5 and 5 star reviews in Limelight Magazine\, and coverage by various other publications.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge '24: Body the body
DESCRIPTION:Audible Edge’s grand opening is Body the body\, a wild experiment in permission\, possibility and play. Somewhere between the exploratory music concert and the club\, it celebrates the full spectrum of what Audible Edge hopes to be: a safe place for all to experience joy and get silly at the edge of what’s sonically possible. Starting with a Welcome to Country and concert-style performances\, the night gradually gives way to dancing\, communion and experimental physical performance. \nThe centrepiece of the show is our Audible Edge commission for this year\, Myriad Sun in the Block Universe. A four-sided screen made of cold fog allows a gaze into a parallel-universe-Walyalup manifested by wildcard visual designer Tom Rogers. Inside the Block\, the band performs new\, recent and improvised material which references noise music\, rap and footwork. \nBefore that\, Daniel Garlett will welcome us to Country with one of his powerful didgeridoo performances. Crash hot percussionist Rebecca Lloyd-Jones\, visiting from Meanjin\, plays new composition “Thought Sectors” by Sarah Hennies. Committed to minimalism and repetition\, Hennies’ work explores queer & trans identity\, psychoacoustics and the neurology of creativity. This is followed by a live electronic set from Manila-based Joee Mejias. Her work explores the edge of pop music\, making oozy\, amorphous songs and ambient experiments. \nThe rest of the night is soundtracked by Wayang\, Lia T & Rok Riley\, experienced DJs well-known in the underground club scene. At midnight\, physical performances by drag and movement artists Bobby Russell\, Jxnior and Miss Phoria explore mental health and queer embodiment with playful and experimental sound tracks. \nThis is hosted within a world of fabric and light designed by Desmond Tan and Adelaide Harney. Softening the industrial surrounds of PS\, they’ll gently hold our embodied explorations together. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nPS Art Space is a wheelchair accessible venue at street level from the pavement. It has one women’s bathroom and one gender-neutral\, wheelchair accessible bathroom located on the ground floor. The music will have moments where it is very loud\, repetitive\, percussive or highly stimulating\, increasingly so towards the later parts of the evening. Alcohol will be served at the venue. The venue is large\, and the front door will be kept open for the duration of the performance\, but there are no windows for ventilation in the main gallery. The centre of the area\, and the bar\, may be very crowded at times. A fog machine will be used for some of the performances. Projections and lights will be used which may be bright at times (no flashing lights or strobes will be used; performers using projections have been briefed on access considerations for photosensitive epilepsy). Two “rave aunties” will be present in the space to provide water and other assistance if required. There is no dedicated check-out space booked for the space currently.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge '24: After Lili
DESCRIPTION:After Lili is a homely crossover of a solo piano concert\, crip hangout space\, and 6-hour durational performance art. It explores disabled cultural histories and everyday self-advocacy\, in recognition of the French composer Lili Boulanger (1893 – 1918). Boulanger wrote contemplative and expressive music\, with ambitious structures that embedded her own crip time living with chronic illnesses. She is remembered for her professional achievements whilst challenging reductive perceptions of women composers\, and passed away when she was 24. \nIn his last month of being 24\, Patrick Gunasekera will perform Boulanger’s 1911 piano work “Prelude in Db” 24 times in After Lili. Each repeat of this cycle starts with a piano improvisation in Gunasekera’s voice at an age represented by the repeat number. This performance is intertwined with pre-recorded conversations between young disabled artists\, reflecting on young adulthood and how they relate to disabled forerunners in the arts. \nAccessibility:\n\nThe State Library of Western Australia Theatrette is a wheelchair accessible venue\, with space for wheelchairs in the front row accessible via even carpet. Below the venue\, the State Library of WA carpark has 5 ACROD parking bays on the ground level and 2 on the basement level. There are numerous wheelchair accessible\, all-gender bathrooms located throughout the library. The event is alcohol-free and all-ages. It can be attended online via YouTube\, with the chat moderated by an usher. The venue is indoors with no windows\, but it is spacious and there will be room to sit socially distanced. There is no dedicated check-out space booked for this session. \nThe performance is 6 hours long\, with allocated intermission times for breaks\, and permission to come and go at any time. Seating will include upright theatre chairs accessed both by a staircase and on ground level. There will be (blankets\, cushions\, and beanbags) to lie down on closer to the stage. \nAfter Lili is a relaxed performance with low sensory input. Lighting will be gentle but bright enough to move around in. The music will be slow\, swelling and comforting.\nPre-recorded voices in the work will be captioned and projected above the piano. \n3 people with lived experience of disability will be ushering the event. \nAfter Lili contains some discussions about (advocacy fatigue\, disabled mental health)\, and is created to be a comfortable experience for audiences. If you are planning to attend the full 6-hour performance\, we recommend you bring your own food to eat outside during intermissions. There are water fountains inside the venue\, and the nearest café is Epoch at WA Museum Boola Bardip.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge '24: Put 'em in a box
DESCRIPTION:Tone List and Cool Change Contemporary host the opening of “Put ‘em in a box”\, an exhibition of a creative process coordinated by Taiwanese curator Shih Ya Tien. As well as this opening event\, the Cool Change gallery is also open to the public between 11am and 4pm on Thursdays and Fridays. \nA city is like a vast container\, encompassing the chirps of birds\, barks of dogs\, human chatters\, as well as the noises of traffic and construction sites. Activities happening in nature or facilitated by humans never cease to occur and to generate sounds. These sounds\, which permeate our daily lives\, come together to form delicate fragments of a place’s past and present. They quietly accumulate beyond the bounds of language and shape our understanding of a city. In order to capture\, replicate\, represent\, and play these audio fragments\, various devices for sound production and reproduction have been invented. These devices themselves\, too\, act as containers which facilitate the reception and circulation of intricate\, mundane secrets. \nPut ’em in a Box invites 5 artists residing in different cities—Chi Po Hao\, Chloe Lin\, Samuel Beilby\, Sarah Song\, suzueri (Elico Suzuki)—to share their unique perspectives on sounds through their artistic practices\, and\, furthermore\, to exchange materials such as field recordings capturing the sounds of their local environments. This project experiments with conversions between visual and audio interfaces\, while also exploring how sounds are captured\, interpreted\, and expressed. Through the artists’ layered reception and interpretation of sounds at the locations where they listen\, in video call windows on screens\, in chats\, in mailed cardboard boxes\, and\, ultimately\, within white cubes\, the multifaceted attributes of Taipei\, Tainan\, Tokyo\, Perth\, and Helsinki are beautifully illustrated. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nThe Kings Complex building is wheelchair accessible via the ramp entry. Cool Change is located on the second level\, accessible via lift. Doorways are 83cm wide. There are no accessible bathrooms in the building. The closest accessible bathroom is located in the City of Perth Library\, 150m down the road on Hay Street. No alcohol will be served at the venue. The Cool Change Project Space is small\, and does not have windows that can be kept open. The space may feel crowded at times. There is no dedicated check-out space booked for the space currently.

DESCRIPTION:All the clouds go to school is a curve-ball afternoon gig that celebrates local legends in the north-side home of indie music\, The Bird. Grab a cold one and ease into this playful\, curious and wandering array of live sets from the best of Boorloo’s underground DIY scene. \nExperimental post-rock geniuses The Definitives combine unassuming yet profound lyricism with charming ocker delivery and way-out instrumental grooves. They perform as a large collective with spoken word\, guitars\, drum machines and synthesizers. The music they make together is free-form and raucous\, yet also tender and personal. \nMulti-disciplinary artist Luka Buchanan collaborates with emerging composer (and sibling!) Ben Buchanan\, in a compelling duo of cello and spoken word. Together they explore poetic relationships in music\, conveying complex emotional landscapes in nuanced detail. Their sound is informed by a passion for improvisation\, lo-fi aesthetics and DIY methods. \nLocal improvising trio Anaxios create melodic ambience in a time-stretched dream state. Featuring Cohen Bourgault\, the prolific David West (Rat Columns\, Lace Curtain\, Burning Sensation\, Scythe)\, and Tim Loughman (Basic Mind)\, Anaxios unite their individual sensibilities towards acoustic DIY and ambient electronic practices. \nWe recommend you check out Patrick Gunasekera’s durational performance After Lili in the State Library of Western Australia’s Theatrette before hand – or even in the gaps between sets. After The Bird\, you can keep the party rolling with evening drinks and social hangs at Betweens\, featuring selections from Cooper Cooper at Astral Weeks\, before kicking on to Three flutters in the evening. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nThe Bird is a wheelchair accessible venue at street level from the pavement\, the stage area and courtyard are ramp accessible. It has one gender-neutral\, wheelchair accessible bathroom in the courtyard. The music will have moments where it is loud\, repetitive\, percussive or highly stimulating. Alcohol will be served at the venue. The venue is large\, and the front and rear door will be kept open for the duration of the performance. Music is broadcast to the courtyard and can be listened to from there if preferred. The centre of the area\, and the bar\, may be very crowded at times. You can walk 650m from the bar to the Beaufort St Museum bus stop (Stop ID: 12132) to catch the 950 bus directly down Beaufort St\, where it stops just outside LnA. There will be a group of us travelling between gigs\, so please contact the AE team if you need someone to walk with. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nAstral Weeks is a small\, acoustically treated space. It’s a small bar and as such alcohol will be present. The music will be at a comfortable listening volume. It is wheelchair accessible at street level\, and has a gender-neutral accessible bathroom. The room is indoors and airconditioned and windows are kept closed\, meaning ventilation is limited. Lighting will be low and warm. No dedicated check-out space is available.

SUMMARY:Audible Edge '24: Three flutters
DESCRIPTION:Three Flutters explores the vibrations of attention\, frequency and rhythm in the cosy settings of one our favourite meeting places\, Local and Aesthetic. Lit by Adelaide Harney and with a bespoke menu of snacks\, this is a cute environment to meet with the lush and vibrant end of experimental sound. \nSophia Hansen-Knarhoi and Liam Downey are young musicians invested in new possibilities in pop music. Working with cello\, digital synthesis and voice\, their new work for Audible Edge explores the tension between overstimulation and reflection. It ebbs between collage and ambient forms\, and minimalist and hyperpop aesthetics. \nNaarm-based improviser Nick Ashwood is a prolific\, committed maker\, working variously with organs\, steel-string guitar\, and synthesizers. His Audible Edge performance sees him play live in quadrophonic surround sound on his Buchla 200e synthesizer. A classic analogue instrument\, Nick’s approach is assuredly contemporary\, informed by detailed experiments with tuning systems and timbral blends. It is unashamedly gorgeous and beautiful. \nSivakumar Balakrishnan and Alex Reid are frontrunning Boorloo percussionists who are serious shredders. Working on tabla and drum kit respectively\, this performance sees them explore their friendship and diverse musical backgrounds through rhythm and improvisation. A rare collaboration between two artists that commonly work together as teacher and student\, Boorloo percussion doesn’t go much harder than this. \n\nAccessibility:\n\nLocal & Aesthetic is a wheelchair accessible venue. Entry will be via the ramp on the right hand side of the building\, rather than the front doors. It has one gender-neutral\, wheelchair accessible bathroom towards the rear of the venue. The music will have moments where it is loud\, repetitive\, percussive or overwhelming. Alcohol and food will be served at the venue. The venue is large. Doors and windows to the venue will be open during the breaks\, but closed during the music performances. The space may feel crowded at times. Lighting will not involve fast flashing lights or strobes\, and will shift and change in colour and tone throughout the performance. There is no dedicated check-out space booked for the space.
