DESCRIPTION:SINE is the provocation of sound made visual. SINE is a mathematical series where the operation adds infinite quantities to a given equation. Mathematics\, music and visual art expand common threads of thinking and expression around thoughts of order. \nArtist\, musician\, maker combine to mediate expressions through material object\, instrument\, performance\, and the graphic to form the exhibition SINE at Wallace. SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: Kastoms
DESCRIPTION:Kastoms is a new iteration of Taloi Havini’s Answer to the Call\, an immersive twenty-two speaker installation\, composed in dialogue with contemporary arts practice\, scientific investigation and customary wisdom. \nOriginally created after her residency onboard the R/V Falkor (Schmidt Ocean Institute) and premiered with the TBA21-Academy at Ocean Space\, Venice (2021)\, this significant work is now re-imagined in Australia for the first time\, resounding in a series of cycles specifically for the Old Customs House in Fremantle. \nAn island platform will lie at the centre\, its shape and blue tones will evoke the depth and expanse of our understanding of Oceania from the viewpoint of the artists homeland\, the island of Buka\, Bougainville. Listeners will be absorbed into a meditative and gradual evolving soundtrack\, designed by Hayley Forward. Hydrophone recordings of sea floor sonar mapping are layered with ocean chants and Indigenous instruments composed by musician’s Ben Hakalitz and Mario Celestino. Traversing beyond a scientific lens\, Kastoms utilises an ancient call and response method as an invitation for all to enter a temporal space created for deep-listening and relating. \nLike the ocean\, Kastoms is a work of sensory depth\, ancient dialogues and cultural contemporary resonance. SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: Resonant
DESCRIPTION:Resonant is an exhibition bringing together two distinct installations at PS Art Space by Bori Benko and Rob Kettels. In conversation with space\, time and\, one another. Resonant will transport viewers into an entangled vibrational and sonic world\, into a space of shared visual lyricism and intertwined histories. \nBori Benko’s Songs to the Universe makes visible the vibrating forces beyond our perception. Everything in our world\, in the digital landscape and within our bodies\, hum with vibrational energy. Bori captures these different frequencies and unique tunes in her moving mechanical sculptures. Revealed in this exhibition are the harmonies\, patterns and travelling waves that are usually invisible to the human eye. \nRob Kettels’ installation delves into the legacy of maritime time-balls – now obsolete navigational instruments – which served as signalling devices for mariners beginning in the early 19th century. Inspired by a historical incident in 1911 when Fremantle’s time-ball malfunctioned\, dropping at the incorrect time\, Rob’s artwork unfolds in a fictional narrative portraying a ship’s disorientating return to Europe with its timepiece mistakenly set. Electromechanical assemblages and animated sequences playfully expose and challenge settler colonial notions of mastery and control of time. \nGallery hours: 10am-8pm\, Thursday to Sunday. \n[Editor’s note: PS Art Space’s ground floor is wheelchair accessible with accessible bathrooms. SUMMARY:Malleefowl 8: Sally Ann McIntyre (Naarm) & Andrew Sutherland
DESCRIPTION:Come on Monday\, November 13\, 6pm for performances by poet Andrew Sutherland and sound artist Sally Ann McIntyre. \nAndrew Sutherland is a Queer Poz (PLHIV) writer\, poet and theatre-maker in Boorloo making some of the most challenging and intruiging work in town (in this author’s opinion). His work moves between confronting experimentalism and pop culture affection deftly\, sometimes even managing to make one seem like the other. He will read some of his amazing poems. \nSally Ann McIntyre visits from Naarm to play at the Fremantle Biennale on November 9. Here she’s offering something better suited to a small space and close listening attention\, rather than the windy outdoor festival location. Her work speaks volumes about extinction\, loss and absence using sampled documentary audio\, radio silence\, dead air\, static and interference. \nAs always there will be dinner to share. It will probably be something needlessly elaborate. It will be vegetarian and will accommodate everyone’s dietary needs. Entry is either via three flights of stairs (the front door)\, a very steep driveway to the right of the house followed by a single step to enter the house\, or a single flight of steps followed by a single step to enter the house on the right side. The bathroom is not wheelchair accessible (the entranceway is narrow\, and around a bend). Happy to assist with access if needed but the bathroom situation sucks. Otherwise: the vibe will be pretty relaxed\, you can check out in the garden if you need to take a break\, there’s multiple seating options\, the music will be relatively quiet (acoustic\, unamplified)\, there are usually quite a lot of people in a relatively small space.
