DESCRIPTION:SINE is the provocation of sound made visual. SINE is a mathematical series where the operation adds infinite quantities to a given equation. Mathematics\, music and visual art expand common threads of thinking and expression around thoughts of order. \nArtist\, musician\, maker combine to mediate expressions through material object\, instrument\, performance\, and the graphic to form the exhibition SINE at Wallace. SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: The Port's Call
DESCRIPTION:Fremantle’s Inner Harbour will be transformed by The Port’s Call\, an expansive sonic installation by Thomas Supple and Byron J Scullin. Beginning at dawn on the first day of the Biennale and continuing until dusk on Sunday 12 November\, the arrival and departure of each large vessel (regardless of the time of day)\, will be signalled by a bespoke soundscape. \nWith each passing vessel\, a continually changing symphony of sound\, using long-range acoustic technology\, will echo throughout the Port. Stretching across a square kilometre\, from the South Mole into Victoria Quay\, the harbour will become a living stage for this sound experience\, attuned to the rhythms of industry. \nCombining human voices and subtle electronics\, this auditory voyage invites listeners to consider anew the cacophony\, movement and epic orchestra that is our global system of commercial goods. \nResonating across the surfaces of these iconic ocean goliaths\, The Port’s Call is an unrepeatable experience calling us to voyage and this place of safe harbour. \n[Editor’s note: Accessibility details available on the event website.]

SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: Kastoms
DESCRIPTION:Kastoms is a new iteration of Taloi Havini’s Answer to the Call\, an immersive twenty-two speaker installation\, composed in dialogue with contemporary arts practice\, scientific investigation and customary wisdom. \nOriginally created after her residency onboard the R/V Falkor (Schmidt Ocean Institute) and premiered with the TBA21-Academy at Ocean Space\, Venice (2021)\, this significant work is now re-imagined in Australia for the first time\, resounding in a series of cycles specifically for the Old Customs House in Fremantle. \nAn island platform will lie at the centre\, its shape and blue tones will evoke the depth and expanse of our understanding of Oceania from the viewpoint of the artists homeland\, the island of Buka\, Bougainville. Listeners will be absorbed into a meditative and gradual evolving soundtrack\, designed by Hayley Forward. Hydrophone recordings of sea floor sonar mapping are layered with ocean chants and Indigenous instruments composed by musician’s Ben Hakalitz and Mario Celestino. Traversing beyond a scientific lens\, Kastoms utilises an ancient call and response method as an invitation for all to enter a temporal space created for deep-listening and relating. \nLike the ocean\, Kastoms is a work of sensory depth\, ancient dialogues and cultural contemporary resonance. SUMMARY:Fremantle Biennale: Resonant
DESCRIPTION:Resonant is an exhibition bringing together two distinct installations at PS Art Space by Bori Benko and Rob Kettels. In conversation with space\, time and\, one another. Resonant will transport viewers into an entangled vibrational and sonic world\, into a space of shared visual lyricism and intertwined histories. \nBori Benko’s Songs to the Universe makes visible the vibrating forces beyond our perception. Everything in our world\, in the digital landscape and within our bodies\, hum with vibrational energy. Bori captures these different frequencies and unique tunes in her moving mechanical sculptures. Revealed in this exhibition are the harmonies\, patterns and travelling waves that are usually invisible to the human eye. \nRob Kettels’ installation delves into the legacy of maritime time-balls – now obsolete navigational instruments – which served as signalling devices for mariners beginning in the early 19th century. Inspired by a historical incident in 1911 when Fremantle’s time-ball malfunctioned\, dropping at the incorrect time\, Rob’s artwork unfolds in a fictional narrative portraying a ship’s disorientating return to Europe with its timepiece mistakenly set. Electromechanical assemblages and animated sequences playfully expose and challenge settler colonial notions of mastery and control of time. \nGallery hours: 10am-8pm\, Thursday to Sunday. \n[Editor’s note: PS Art Space’s ground floor is wheelchair accessible with accessible bathrooms. Each offers their music alongside vivid modes of performance – where elements of theatre\, human movement\,\nSCRATCHING is the ever-evolving collaboration of Grace Sanders and Ezekiel Padmanabham\, augmented live by some of Boorloo’s finest players and sound-shapers. With Grace’s introspective-yet-sprawling songwriting and Ezekiel’s omnivorous production approach\, Scratching can veer from futuristic dance-pop to lo-fi folk; ambient balladry to chiming electronica; even to noise and accelerationist pop-punk without once breaking the spell of their distinctive soundworld. Never the type to rest on their laurels\, Scratching have hinted at an extra-special set for Goolugatup Sounds 16; whatever it is is likely to be bold and bright\, emanating life-affirming creative energy.\nTravelling West from Sydney/Gadigal country is MARCUS WHALE\, one of the most unmistakeable presences in the Australian DIY music scene. When he’s not making avant-pop with long running duo Collarbones or gothy punk with Perfect Actress\, Marcus’ solo practice excavates the “blurry intersection between desire and religion” and “the poetics of memory and ghostliness.” His crystalline voice is typically front and centre – with dramatic electronics\, heady percussion and warped club rhythms forming a an ornate\, at times grotesque architecture for it to inhabit and diffuse. Effortlessly folding in the aesthetics of opera\, horror cinema and hyperreal erotica\, Marcus crafts singular moods and an entirely unforgettable live show.\nLAURA ALTMAN\, also based on Gadigal Country\, is a cherished fixture in Sydney’s experimental sound community – known for her roles in projects like Splinter Orchestra\, Prophets\, Great Waitress\, Couch (with Low Flung) and many more. As a composer and solo performer\, Laura explores everything from painterly drones and “extended techniques” to song-forms\, social practice and the zoomed-in details of timbre and resonance. Tone List (who alongside Goolugatup are presenting Laura’s artist residency at Yagan Mia / Wireless Hill) remark that “Laura has an extraordinary and unique practice of improvising with clarinet\, cassette tapes\, resonators and acoustic feedback from small speakers\, in a manner where it’s hard to distinguish what thing is making what sound.” Whatever their puzzling origins\, Laura’s sounds are bound to captivate\, thrill and intrigue.\nPLUS – an open studio and pop-up shop from local makers VOLIM\, food from local providores\, full bar and the opening of Goolugatup’s annual site-specific exhibition TILT – this year featuring Lisa Liebetrau and Shannon Lyons in a show curated by Brent Harrison.\n[www.goolugatup.com/exhibitions]\n–~*~–\nWe acknowledge the Bibbulmun as the Traditional Owners of the land on which we stand and pay respect to the Whadjuk people\, and Elders past\, present\, future.\nACCESS –\nPhysical access: Goolugatup gallery is wheelchair accessible via footpaths / low-incline ramps\, and ACROD parking is available nearby. SUMMARY:Perth International Jazz Festival: Shannon Barnett Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Trombonist Shannon Barnett and her quartet blend German precision with Australian humour and musical mastery. \nDescribed as a “soul-meltingly communicative brass player”\, trombonist Shannon Barnett brings her German-based quartet to the Perth International Jazz Festival for the time. Building on her already impressive performance background in Australia\, Barnett moved to Cologne in 2014\, where she soon crossed paths with David Helm (bass)\, Fabian Arends (drums) and Stefan Karl Schmid (tenor saxophone) and subsequently formed this quartet.
